    @4:09 that thing on the wall is a sanitary pad incinerator for women to dispose of sanitary pads. The tower I lived in one had them too. You opened the door on the top, dropped in the item when you closed the drawer it incinerated it. And you cleaned out the ashes in the bottom drawer that you opened. It was more hygienic than putting them down the bin chute.

    The strange white item you discovered on the wall (with the flue at the top and the draw at the bottom) is an electric sanitary napkin incinerator/destructor. The handle on the side opens up the flap at the top where the item to be incinerated is deposited. When the handle is released the flap closes and a clockwork timer switch (spring wound by initial operation of the lever) turns on electric elements for a set period. The flap and the handle are then mechanically locked until the timer has finished (prevents inserting additional items whilst the incinerator is in operation). The pull out drawer at the bottom is for ash collection and must be in place for the unit to operate. These incinerators were around in the late 50's, 60's and early 70's in women's public toilets. It is unusual to find one here, unless there used to be a toilet at this level or it had some other special purpose for incinerating things. This is probably one of the last few remaining units that is still mounted insitu.

      Spot on! Some flats had these in the bin shed area, the idea being you put your normal waste in the standard bins and pop your sanitary items in the incinerator

    I lived here in the late 60s when the building was new. The tower still features in my bad dreams. There was a laundry area on our floor. We used to creep ourselves out by taking the lift up to top floor 24. The lift opened up to a maintenance area with mummy-cloth covered pipes. The tower has improved a lot now, with concierge and security cameras, but the towers still creep me out. Thanks for uploading.

      Beno Lifts - I was only about 6/8 years old then. We just pressed the top floor button on the lift and it went up there. Maybe we shouldn't have had access and there was a fault, but it was easy to get up there.

    Really weird layout in that top plantroom. It does look a lot like german bunker. This building is an example of too much security. Despite having all the security it is not working particulairy effectively. I mean in the other tower someone before you already defeated the overzealus security devices. It just shows that more security is not always effective and can be counter productive as authorised personell will find it inconveint and work around it, making it more lax. It’s the same kind of paradox with computer security. If it’s too restrictive, the users will be super annoyed because that can’t get their work done due to overzealus security.

    I used to live in one of the top floor 'penthouses' in the Daubenay Tower 1982-5. This was before they had a roof over the top of the block and I had access to the sky from my flat. It could have been a lovely place to live accept the crime rate was through the roof too. I gave up trying to own anything that mattered, two squatted flats full of junkies either side of me. The block looks much more secure now, with cameras and concierge (are they actually operational though). I was there when they fitted the cladding to the block, the scaffolding caused a deluge of burglaries .... I guess the junkies were shoving it up their arms like there was no tomorrow those days. I was glad to leave, I miss the view, I miss the spacious flat but not the ever present crime.

    The boarding in the motor room doesn't usually contain asbestos. It's some sort of grass compacted onto a bale which is then dipped in cement. Maybe they added asbestos to it in the UK? Dunno. Here in Finland, it's called Tojax and was a very common building material. The original Tojax board doesn't contain asbestos and actually a very eco friendly material too. Only the coatings were asbestos containing, but generally their uncoated. In my previous school's wood working class junkies used to throw wet scraps onto the ceiling (which was this material) and they would get attached to it. After a few years the ceiling looked disgusting :( The material has actually made a comeback and is used in some modern buildings.

    • @benolifts
      @benolifts  6 лет назад +3

      They added asbestos to pretty much everything in the UK. All plaster board and other things they made fake internal walls with and lined supporting walls with contained it in various amounts. They thought it was an amazing material and should be used in everything.

    I love these... fascinating stuff, these buildings have such bewilderingly random layouts. Am curious about the lift situation going on here that seems evident in your other tower block video: If only one lift serves even floors and the other lift serves odd floors, that's still basically the equivalency of an 11-story building with one lift. The waiting for one already in use must be excruciating at times - is this typical in UK highrises, or is it presumed they're just cutting corners being that they're public housing? I don't know there's a cars-per-floor rule here in the US, but I don't think I've ever seen a building that tall here that doesn't have at least 3, maybe 4 elevators. :O

  • @simonstergaard

    Have been viewing a number of your vdeos regarding Pepys estate. I was the project manager for the Estate Actionre furbishment in the 1990's I predicted that roof would end up covered in Rubbish. I feared someone would drop a fridge on it babies nappies were an epidemic. What you have not cottened on to when in the corridors are these flats were called scissor flats. If yours went up, next doors went down, so if on to the balcony your neigbour could be from 2 floors up or two floors down confused so was your next door neighbour if you asked them in for a coffee. Mike

    • @benolifts
      @benolifts  3 года назад

      I find Pepys estate very interesting. I have been in Maydew house which is the same design, and it is empty inside and you can see the layout of the flats. It is weird but very interesting. It must be nice being able to see out both sides of the building. What they have done to the roofs of Pepys estate is very strange.

    • @allotmentuk1303
      @allotmentuk1303 3 года назад

      @@benolifts Thank you for your responce. I have a number of questions regarding Pepy's but one that I think about a lot due to the current Climate crisis and especially Extinct rebellions call for retro fit insulations. One of the problems with retro fitting insulation is, if done correctly, results in condensation. This is currently in the news lots of reports of excessive condensation in social housing properties but not associated with retro fitted insulation. We knew this at the time of the refurbishment and to combat this we put in place a heat recovery system. I worked with Vent Axia to develop a unit suitable for Social Housing. The prototype worked but we found was not suitable for social housing. It was designed as to look like a cooker hood, residents did not understand this. To them it was a cooker hood so, in further blocks we changed the design and built a false wall at of the corridor and this worked.
      First question. Are they still there?
      If so, are they being maintained for example new filters being fitted or cleaned?
      And are residents aware when running saves 75% of the cost of heating?
      It needs a survey and would give an opportunity for a great video. Take care Mike

    Also ;) at the end of your video, you state that you weren't doing anything illegal -- which, as someone who has spent lots of time taking self-guided tours of buildings myself, I absolutely appreciate that line of thinking -- but in the States, there's always the possibility of getting pinched for trespassing if a building was so inclined to pursue such charges. Is that not a thing over there? :D

    • @jakewynn
      @jakewynn 2 года назад

      No the UK is ironically a more free country than America. Trespass is a Civil Offence and not a Criminal Offence. This means you CANNOT be prosecuted for it. Of course, rich land owners have found loopholes to get people arrested (see Benos video on why he hates the UK) and if you do something bad like vandalise or steal then you can quite rightly be prosecuted for that.

      The LPS ones? There are not many left. They have been considered dangerous for decades but only recently did they start getting pulled down. I personally think they look nice. And the interiors are more spacious than other designs of tower blocks. Apparently a couple of them had internal upright supports added to make them safe, but it is unclear if these ones will survive. There are a couple of blocks on the old kent road that are still there, but they will be gone soon. Each block has a permerent 24 hour member of staff who's job is to check that everyone who enters the building doesn't bring a gas canister in. That must be a huge expense for the housing association.

    Do these have asbestos?

    • @juliuseskola1281
      @juliuseskola1281 6 лет назад

      Of course they do. Almost every building that's from the 60's and 70's has lots of asbestos. I'm not sure whether the boards in the motor room contain it, in my home country similar kind of boards don't. But I'd bet it's everywhere around the building, not just so visible. Having asbestos is not a horrible thing afterall, people don't actually realize how widespread it's use was. If everyone around it would get sick, we had millions of deaths. It depends a lot on how it's managed and where it is. For example having asbestos cement in a building is not really a big issue (I cannot see why the value would go down etc), but I'd not want to stay on a building with sprayed asbestos for longer than a few hours. Sprayed asbestos is just so goddamn horrible due to it's friability and the most cancerous types of asbestos being used too.

      Its an old electric sanitary napkin incinerator, they were usually found in women's toilets until the early 70's.
      The handle on the side opens up the flap at the top, the item to be incinerated is deposited and when the handle is release a clockwork timer switch (wound up by initial activation of the handle) turns on powerful electric elements for a set period of time. The drawer at the bottom is for ash collection. It is very unusual to find one here, they were usually only found in women's toilets.

    So beno, you have a triangle key right? What mm or cm did you use for otid

      To open lifts you need a crucifix key. Triangle keys don't work very well. The mm sizes are not a reliable way to tell the size of the key.

    The narrator is far too excited, seems to take pleasure in the problems here, and sounds like a caricature like Austin Powers.
    This subject deserves a bit more seriousness and sobriety.
    Everyone wants to solve these problems.

    the building looks nice but it should probably have some balcony's for fire safety so that we dont get another Grenfell Tower Fire Disaster.

      Um just interested how do the balconies help? The fire goes along the cladding on the surface of the building. You'd not want to be on the balcony when the fire is blazing directly under you. I think the best solution is to hermetically seal the escape ways from the corridors, and apartments from the corridors.

      @@juliuseskola1281 if the cladding was fire proof/resistant then the fire would have to spread inside the building so if the stairs are blocked by the fire then people can climb down from the balconies or the fire brigade can hoist a ladder to the balcony to rescue the people waiting there to be saved

      I grew up in a building in NYC which was 21 floors and the balconies saved many peoples lives in a fire. There was a fire on the 12th floor and everyone above was trapped due to the flames and smoke. Our apartment was filling up in smoke. We waited it out on the balcony for a few hours. If not for the balcony we would have died from the smoke.
