In the books, Chrisjen isn't introduced until the second book, having her in the show from the beginning makes the plot much better
I don't miss her in the first book, but it makes sense to have her there from the start in the show for worldbuilding purposes.
Nice to see you two already in love with The Expanse. With that being the case merely in S1, you two are going to be over the hill come S2 and beyond! As crazy as it sounds, this show manages to keep getting better and better...even when you think they can't one up what they've done!
When the writers gave Wes Chatam the brief on his character (Amos) the actor went ahead and did extensive research based on the backstory he was given by the writers so that he could play the character correctly and respectfully.
Wes says that he was already a fan of the books before he got the part. He did research the psychological aspects of Amos Burton as well.
They also say that the "churn" speech is the one that was used to cast the role of Amos and Wes and another guy were the only two that actually got it right. Everyone else just played it as a macho threatening scene.
Wes knew that Amos wasn't threatening anyone in that scene. In fact he was giving the guy a kind of kindness in explaining to him the fact that he was dead and that it wasn't personal.
The other actor that got that scene right was ironically the one that ended up in the other end of that scene
Amos is the best written goon I have ever seen in a TV show.....and I am speaking as someone who worked as a goon for years
@@androkguz the irony of him responding to that speech with: "I have no idea what you just said" 🤣
Wow, Holden actually getting some love, show got so many good characters, Jimmy boy usually get push down the ranks by Amos, Avasarala, Miller...etc.
Exactly, Holden is the best, don't know why people hating on him, he want's the best for the people around him and still some people hating him for no reason, it seems like nowadays people don't like good guys anymore.
Welcome to discovering Avasarala's wardrobe. Even guys with no fashion sense are impressed 😅.
So many statements that those in the know are just waiting for you to get confirmed, strengthened, or disproven and see how your reactions to those will be 😉
Avasarala's wardrobe has its on X -Ray entry on Amazon in later season. Like I said in the past, if we get more seasons than the 6, the outfits will be in the opening credits and I am okay with that :D
Miller's name is Josephus (joe-SEEF-us) which is Joe for short though he's usually just called Miller.
Nobody ever called him Josephus. It was Joseph at most from what I remember
Josh
I named my late puppy "Miller" in honor of the detective. I would only ever call him Josephus when he misbehaved
@@GewalfofWivia I mean L and M clearly heard or read it somewhere or they wouldn't be confused by it. Not to mention, you know, the novels.
Don’t forget his full name is Josephus Aloisus 😂
The discussion that Miller has in the bar with Dawes is just... it's just brilliant. Dawes gets to both threaten and extend an olive branch all in one beautifully delivered line.
Olive branch? Dawes is scum, a thug. Who do you think set up Havelock to get speared in front of a camera as a warning? Who had Miller dumped into an airlock when he failed to back off? Big frog in a small pond, trying to sleaze his way into the big time.
That is a view. I do not agree.
Such foreshadowing in what Dawes says. He nails it word for word.
@@bobriemersma I disagree as well. Dawes is far more intelligent and tactful than the average OPA goon. He's always focused on his political goals and never breaks from that motive. He is willing to use any unscrupulous means to further his goals, but he is not simply an egomaniac.
There's a Don Quixote theme running ithrough these episodes, and we discovered in this episode that it is Holden's favorite story. Don Quixote fought windmills thinking they were giants, and it's the title of this episodes. We also see Wind turbines on the farm which are modern windmills.
Other references To DQ is of course the Rocinante, DQ's horse and the title of the first episode, Dulcinea, who is DQ's ideal woman. Julie is apparently Miller's Dulcinea.
Oh man, watching you guys trying to decide your top 5 characters as this show goes on is going to be a lot of fun.
And some that they've barely met will shoot up the list in mid-S3.
My favorite character is literally all of them.
But honestly I love how important the side characters are in the show. Even the ones there for just an episode. People who risk everything and die and oftentimes literally save all human life but will never know it, and often we don't even know their names.
We've already had one with Lieutenant Lopez who died getting them off the Donager
I think their favorite character will be here soon!🥁
@@tumbleheart4664
Here, here.....I agree.
They haven't even met Drummer, Ashford, and Bobbie yet.
"Queen of earth!!" She said it, you heard it guys! : )
Well, she DOES have a habit of doing whatever the fuck she likes.
Milena has a keen eye for recognizing people. She knows people from past seasons in other shows and even actors from other shows showing up on others.
I just realized they don't recognize Aviserela's voice from Arcane though. Lol.
she is a face ninja for sure
So, remember the scene at the aquarium when Chrisjen blackmailed the guy to lend her his spy? Kenzo is that spy.
Holden will always be Holden. 😁
Amos is just doing what needs to be done, whereas Holden is an idealist. I love that scene. Note that Amos is immediately over it. No grudge at all that Holden had a gun to his head moments before - situation is over so he moves on.
Next 3 episodes are intense - now the story really kicks into next gear.
And you will get Amos' backstory, and Naomi's but you'll have to be patient and enjoy the ride.
Can't wait for 8.
There are so many amazing characters in this show, but Holden is my favourite, ever since he went back to save his crew.
I usually roll my eyes at idealistic protagonists like Holden. They come off one dimensional and painfully uninteresting. That being said, Holden is an exception to the rule. Well written and perfectly cast imo. I love the guy. The Expanse absolutely gets it right.
Loved your reaction. Minor tip: No need to worry about calling him James or Jimmy. Most of the other characters just call him Holden, and that's the case among fans too.
I love watching people fall in love with this series. It only gets better from here. Enjoy the ride!
It's so great to see you're enjoying it so much. The beautiful thing about this show is that it only gets better and better
SO MUCH better. Season 1 is good but the rest are freaking amazing.
And then things get REALLY crazy in books 7, 8, and 9!
Already in love with Amos after just a few episodes. This is going to be really good.
Amos is an awesome character, agreed. However he will feel no remorse in killing you or anyone else (except Naomi). I cannot figure out if he is immoral or just chaotic.
@@michaelshafer5192 He is moral, and extremely so, but his ethics are very simple. These ladies will see how it plays out, but Amos has already pointed out that he follows Naomi because she always does the right thing. Amos wants always to do the right thing.
@@michaelshafer5192 Oh, he's *much* more complex than either.
🙄
Nobody is always right. Did Naomi want Amos to kill Holden while he and Holden were trying to fix communications outside their little ship or want him to kill Holden when he tried to get a message out that Mars was about to either kill or capture all of them. I agree that he is a complex man with simple standards, but I still believe he would have chosen to kill Holden except he would have disappointed her. I see that as a learned behavior, not a moral compass. I still think the show is far better with Amos, regardless of what drives his actions.
I can see them falling for the Chrisjen Avasarala, the fabulous potty mouth queen! 😁
Another thing this show does that is so great is letting you see that even though all 3 factions are enemies, you get an insight of each group and know none of them are really bad guys here, they just have different situations that they are dealing with at the micro level but at the macro level tensions are so great that it’s close to war. Really fun stuff
The writing and world building is on another level with this show. So glad to watch this journey with you two!
Love the mystery this season. Such burning questions. Such thrilling anxiety!
I think of this show more in the genre of thriller rather than science fiction.
Really enjoying you guys's reaction. I think you're right about Amos and Holden. The group needs both of them. Holden's fierce idealism is admirable, but there was a reason he'd stalled out in life on the Canterbury. It's good that he's true to himself, but he also needs a realist like Amos to offer (or, in Amos's case, insist on) another perspective. Naomi offers another unique point of view. Like Holden, in her heart she has hope for people, but growing up in the Belt, she's seen too much to not consider the downside of every choice. She's probably the smartest character in the whole show.
#SaveTheExpanse2
The show was cancelled after 3 seasons on SyFy and because of a campaign by fans of the show (#SaveTheExpanse) it was picked up by Amazon. NOW WE MUST SAVE IT AGAIN BELTALOWDA
I'm officially saying to stop calling him Josh!!! Lol. Seriously, just call him Detective Miller!
These reactions are my favourite thing on RUclips atm. Loving your enthusiasm for this show. The fact you’re enjoying it so much already suggests it’ll be an all time favourite by the end of season 3. Can’t wait to see it!
I’m so glad you guys are enjoying the show so much! I’m loving rewatching the show seriously need these reactions after hard days at work 👏
I love that Miller is called Josh here. I mean overall a great reaction this show always delivers the goods.
"Windmills, are we fighitng something that does not exist?"
Rocinante was the hint.
I envy you getting to watch this show for the first time. It's over for me and it's really sad. One of the best sci fi shows ever.
There are more books after Season 6 but there is a big time jump (30 years). That's why they chose not to continue. It will require too much budget to age everyone up digitally or using make up. And since this show was at one time cancelled by Syfy after S3 due to poor ratings, Amazon picked it up for S4-6, they probably don't want to spend the budget needed on a show that isn't a big hit. The show gets really good reviews but it just isn't very popular.
That said, the story wraps up really well in S6 though in my opinion. So don't worry that you might not get a satisfactory ending. Although it does leave one storyline unfinished. Maybe they can pick it up in the future.
It wasn't dropped by Syfy because of ratings. They just had a bad deal where they only got paid for the views from people who watched it as it aired on the network and they don't have streaming. People were mostly watching it on Netflix instead so Syfy was losing a lot of money on it. Not sure where you're claiming to get Amazon numbers on it. They don't release that publicly. It's also irrelevant. Amazon is just the distributer. The IP is owned by Alcon Entertainment, who produced all six seasons. It's up to them whether to pursue options for the final three books, not Amazon. A lot will probably depend on how the game does for them.
I thought they ended the show well with season 6. It made sense, anyway. Maybe if we're really lucky they'll reunite the cast 30 years from now and do the remaining books. Stranger things have happened.
@@fakecubed Yep I think S6 ending was excellent. The show wrapped up very nicely. I don't think they need to wait 30 years though. Deepfake technology is advancing rapidly, in 5 years they'll probably be able to deepfake everyone to look older and the process will be much faster + cheaper. Or they can just do old school makeup too. It's definitely doable if they wanna do it.
It’s great that you’re”taking so much” before and after the show! It shows your reaction, discussion of your thoughts and let us clearly know what are you getting from the show. Keep at it! It’s why it makes your reactions stand out from others.
Chrisjen Avasarala is so awesome!
Really digging this. You two are doing great. Looking forward to the rest of your journey. You truly are just getting started. By the end of this season your minds will be blown with 5 seasons to go.
Glad you guys already like the show. That means you're gonna be blown away by the rest. The first season got a rotten tomato score of 7.8 and every other season got a 9.5 or 10.
He's not Josh. 🤣😉 Fun reactions. Keep it up!
We see that James Holden was raised in a close family on a pristine self-sufficient farm, drinking pure water, eating good food, where he learned that life was precious. Amos was raised in a brothel in poverty and learned that life is cheap. Yes, very different childhoods.
As we get close to the end of the season, let me mention that Book 1 will continue through half of season 2, so this particular story does not end with the season.
The second book extends to the first half of season 3, and the last half of season 3 covers all of the third book (it's very fast-paced).
The next seasons each cover one book: Season 4 for book 4, season 5 for book 5, and season 6 for book six.
The books take a 30-year time jump between book 6 and book 7, but it continues with the same characters....remember that Earthers and Martians live to more than 120 years.
Amos became my favorite, second only to Avarsarala in this episode when I watched it. His reaction to Holden with the gun isn't anger, because he understands who Holden is and doesn't blame him for doing what he thinks is right. And then later he's completely nonchalant about it with absolutely no grudge for it.
Other characters continually think of him as just a stupid bruiser when, one he is clearly a great mechanic, and two someone that is extremely knowledgeable about reading other people.
I'm truly happy you both are enjoying the expanse.
This show keeps on giving.
Ok, you asked for it! He's not Josh :) His name is Josephus Miller, but everyone just calls him Miller.
Yeah, this show just has some amazing actors and actresses! They have such great and magnetic personalities. There are quite a few that have already been introduced that might even grow to be new favorites
I didn't know anyone could like the first season this much
Fighting the windmills isn't about the enemy being fictitious, it's about the fight being futile (but despite that repeatedly ad infinitum trying to fight, stubbornly, or from illusions of grandeur or some magical pure hope XD) for one reason or another.
"The Churn" is the name of a novella that explains Amos' backstory. Unfortunately you will have to wait a few seasons to see it on the screen.
Great reaction and analysis!!
It's amazing how fast you both are picking up so much so fast! And your enthusiasm for the show so early in the story is awesome! World building is pretty much over, hold on to your ass!! This ride is fixing to take the hell off!!
Can't wait for the next one!
"Boy, what is your history? Where did you come from?"
Oh, you'll learn that alright. :)
Not for a while. Although there are a few hints scattered early.
When you grow up with the name James, typically you start demanding people stop calling you Jimmy at 12 years old or so. The person who consistently never listens, across several people I know: your mother. It's a tiny detail but it really rings true to me.
This show is so well writer and cast. Yhe character stay with you even when you're not watching. I'm glad you're enjoying it so much. The good thing is. It only gets better and better.
During their argument James tells Amos "We're not those guys."
Remember this ;)
Yeah, I noted that line for the first time in this reaction.

Outer Planet's Alliance. That is the best way to remember OPA.
Glad you are already enjoying it, things will get more epic in the following seasons.
The books are like 3 arcs with 3 books for each. The last 3 books are with the same characters from the first 6 but Season 6 is a natural end the most of the plots from the first 6 seasons. The last 3 books could work as a spinoff epilogue show. It's not clear if they could not get more seasons on Amazon so they decided to end it there or maybe it's a plot reason (can't say because of spoiler) why they stopped at season 6 for now.
Really like your reactions, and that you're loving the show. Hang on, the best is yet to come. You'll be breathless by the middle of S3. As far as the characters go, some that you're going to love haven't even been introduced to the story yet.

There are no bad characters....
Agree! There are no bad characters. There may be characters you hate, but you hate them because they're such good and accurate presentations of people worthy of hate.
@@corystanish Exactly. Even minor parts are well written and acted. Every character has some depth and complexity. They're written in a really believable way. I think Errinwright and Avasarala illustrate that complexity really well. They're actually not that much different from each other and both are willing to use similar methods to get what they want, yet they're nuanced enough that we all end up cheering for one of them and hoping for the other to get what's coming to him.
@@corystanish The only bad characters are some Martians that are almost cartoonishly "Can we just shoot 'm yet?"

@@raphaelatienza That's fair.
Miller, just call him Miller
Hi!
I've just subscribed because I love to have a good excuse to re-watch the show.
I don't want to spoil anything, but you will notice how every detail can be important in this show, partially due to realism.
Also many scenes have consequences sometimes seasons later e.g. there is a good part of season 5 linked to something happening in episode 1 of season 1!
Season one is just a starter and the team made some mistakes they regret, but nothing terrible plus season 2 is better while season 3 is just... a killer. Frankly the show gets better and better as you watch it, character development is brilliant and in my opinion the end of the show is perfect.
The books continue after events of season 6, but there is a long time jump so the show had to and at that time. I hope we will get a movie or two with this cast and hopefully a different tv show about events from books 7-9.
Take care!
The Spy never asked for this.
feels like i had to wait a month from last episode :) and the plot just started
watched ep1 with you and now i have watched them all lol
Ron Howard is OPI(e)...the Belter coalition is OPA (Outer Planetary Alliance).
Yes, the show gets up to book 6 out of 9 but there is a 30 year time jump between books 6 and 7 so it's a natural place to pause.
Season 1 is amazing. Season 2 is even better. Season 3 and 5 are two of my favorite pieces of TV shows EVER. Unbelievable series, easily top of all time for me, up there alongside Breaking Bad, House, and Arrested Development. For a long time EVERY EPISODE gets better and better, looking forward to your journey! =)
I love The Expanse! It honestly gets better and better each season.
Also, I know you guys just started this show but I do hope you get around to Midnight Mass some day. It's really good and it's made by the same guy who created The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor so you'll probably like it as it seemed like you enjoyed those.
One thing this show does really well is the evolving relationships between two characters. (mild spoiler warning)
- one of my favourite duo's is Amos and Holden. The way their relationship changes from these early episodes where they literally hold a gun to each other's head (Amos in Ep 2, Holden this episode) - to how it is in later in the show, and how much they both mean to each other, is just an incredible journey.
"How many times have I asked you to trust me?"
"None"
"I'm asking you now..."
Theres a book that gives the background history of Amos, called The Churn.
DO NOT read that until the right time!
I'm not gonna tell you when that is, but you'll recognize the right point in the show, when you get there.

If you are running a traditional TV network, figuring out whether to keep buying new seasons for a show is easy. If the price for the next season is less than what you project you can make by selling commercial time during the show, you renew the show. For a streaming service, that equation is far more complex. There are no commercials. You make money by selling monthly subscriptions. Theoretically, if you buy great shows, more people will subscribe to your streaming service. I have to assume Prime can count the number of views for each show it offers, and that has to factor in to any decision about renewing a show for an additional season. That's an oversimplification, though, because a show is analogous to a bundle of sticks. The producers can sell as many or as few of those sticks to Prime as can be negotiated. Can Prime stream it all over the world, or only in North America. How long can the show remain in the Prime menu for viewing before all rights to it revert to the producers? It is unclear to me who exactly owns the right to sell seasons of The Expanse. It doesn't have to be one single entity. It could be a joint venture involving dozens of separate legal entities, which would further complicate any negotiations with Prime for additional seasons. I don't think the show is unpopular. It has become an extremely valuable property. This smacks more of a failure of negotiations to produce an agreement for more seasons than it does of a "cancellation". At some point in the negotiations Prime dug in its heels and said it had presented its last offer, and the owners of The Expanse walked away from the table thinking they'd sell the remaining seasons to somebody else, is my guess. The difficulty in assessing the financial value of a show aired on a streaming service probably played a role in that failure. With the show having no readily ascertainable value, it was too easy for both sides to form their own opinions on that subject. The quality of The Expanse pretty much guarantees it will continue to grow in popularity as the years go by. I'm convinced we fans will see the final three books onscreen within a few more years.
I also think that at some point even a successful show plateaus in attracting new subscribers, and the services "churn the playlist" just to create more interest for new subscribers.
@@kirkdarling4120 I went looking online for details as to how streaming services operate. They have a formula of sorts which determines whether or not to renew a show for another season which relies heavily upon how many people are subscribing and then binge watching the show. That allows them to make an educated guess as to the additional revenue that can properly be attributed to the show. I cant' say exactly how it factors in to that equation, but I do think having six seasons already means that a lot of people who might otherwise want to subscribe and watch the show decide that six seasons is too great a time commitment, and they don't subscribe. We know that the real problem is that six seasons is nowhere near enough, but people having no personal knowledge of the show's entertainment value won't understand that watching it is not a burdensome commitment. It's an honor and a joy.
@@Yesquire0 Interesting. In a way, success becomes a problem.
