    00:00 Men's Shoe Sizes Introduction
When shoe shopping in stores or especially online seems like shoe sizing subjective and disorganized with variations in regional regulations, manufacturer's standards, and last proportions.
    00:40 Shoe & Foot Measurements
Two ways possible -- basing sizing around the size of the foot or around the size of the last. You’ll note that in neither measurements of the foot nor the last is proportionality considered.
03:43 A Brief History of Sizing Shoes
For most of human history, shoes were made within the household or by local shoemakers. While these shoes didn’t always fit perfectly, they were intended to be rough approximations of a real pair of feet.
    04:36 UK Sizing
    07:32 US Sizing
    12:05 European Sizing
    14:20 Mondopoint System
In the article that accompanies this guide, you’ll find a table that links to the shoe size charts of over 40 popular menswear brands. Even with these tools, however, be prepared for variations due to your individual foot shape that may require sizing up or down a size or half-size.
When it comes to show sizes, fit is more important than a number!

Finally someone dares to address the shoe sizing craziness! I can purchase a perfect 8.5D AEs and vintage Florsheim's sight unseen. However I have purchased fine English shoes which were supposed to be equivalent and neither of them fits perfectly although of very high quality!? Very frustrating. My favorite British shoes are C&J but I will only purchase them at an actual C&J store by first trying a pair on!

I have size 14 feet in US sizing so it’s hard enough to find shoes that fit. Adding to that the annoyances of mostly online shopping and then compounding it with sizing discrepancies makes buying shoes a real nightmare. It’s probably the main roadblock in my menswear journey. Anyway thanks for the very insightful and helpful video. I had never even seen a barleycorn, let alone known they were responsible for shoe sizing being so messed up. It does make me appreciate Scotch a bit more though. Slainte!

it is worse than that. I have two different models of the same (very respectable) brand, one is size 44, the other 46, both fit equally good, whereas usually I wear 43.
Some time ago I held two pairs of the same model (a different mainstream brand) in my hands, one few years older than the other, both claimed to be 28cm long, one was size 43, the other size 44.

In sneakers I take a size 11 Can/USA but in our old military boots my size was 9 1/2! Our military now uses the Mondopoint. In some cases I'll go up to a 12. This is why I don't buy dress shoes online. I could buy Allen Edmonds as I own one pair, but it may take returns to get the right size from another company if I don't already own a pair.

    • @briang530
      @briang530 6 месяцев назад +1

The transition to Mondo point in our military didn't really help things much. We were supposed to get better fitting boots. What we got was a chronic shortage of common sizes.
That aside, I have good luck ordering dress shoes online from good makers*, but it usually requires a bit of correspondence with the manufacturer to determine the ideal size.
      * Carmina among others are especially good for this type of size consultation.

When I was sent to Navy flight school in Pensacola I got jump boots and uniform dress shoes that were the best fit I have ever had in my life. Sinus and ear canal challenges made me leave flying, so it was a sad day when I turned in the boots. My narrow heels have always been the sticking point.
Over the 15 year period that I studied dance I never really found a pair of ballet slippers that fit as they should. Doing modern dance in bare feet became my preference, and the soles of my feet were like a piece of leather for that year.
I became acquainted with European sizing when I danced a Dutch waltz in a parade and had to buy a pair of carved klopfen for the occasion.

10 1/2EE foot here, as measured on the Brannock device in the USA. (BUT, for some companies I fit 11 EE.) Here in Japan I fit a 29 EE (or EEE when I can find them). But, even though many young Japanese men are now larger than I (and thus have larger feet), many shoe stores here still carry nothing larger than a 27! So, I mostly need to order online and see what fits.

I'm very lucky when it comes to shoes - my feet are exactly US 12D on the Brannock. And both are exactly the same size, which is a bit unusual. I can order 12D from pretty much any major US brand sight unseen and they will fit well. Unfortunately, shoes are the only bit of clothing that is easy for me to fit, as I am tall with long arms lol. No thrift store finds for me 😞 But at least I have an easy time with shoes. As for European shoes, I only buy them when I travel there and I can try them on. Usually EU46 works. By the way, I love your range of socks! And wallets and gloves! Thanks for the explainer about crazy shoe sizes.

Growing up I mostly wore hand-me-down shoes that my brother had previously wore. He is 3-1/2 years older than me, which meant when I was young I had to stuff newspaper into the toes so they would fit. Later when I started getting shoes of my own, I would always buy them a half size or a size larger so I could grow into them to keep them longer. This last practice was pretty common among the other boys I knew. I think this is why men often end up wearing shoes that are too big. You keep buying shoes 1/2 size too big, until your feet stop growing. Then you keep buying that last size, which was 1/2 size too big.
The long history of shoe sizing is certainly screwy, but remember that most of the time, most of the people were happy if it was close enough.

Disagree. But it's not really clear what's right. Real handwelted leather shoes for example are the antithesis to barefoot shoes and they are very good for your feet as well. But only as long as you have a good fit. Not buying wider than you need, that won't be a good fit.

Highly depends on the person. Most people I know swear by oversized, roomy and soft trainers. I get unimaginable back pain when standing in them. And I'm sure they do to a lesser extent as well but don't want to admit it.
I need shoes that are harder and much tighter fitting to feel comfortable in them. Until now those have been dress shoes and boots, but a few days back I got some Adidas trainers which actually fit quite close to what a dress boot or shoe would fit. It's the most comfortable thing I've worn.

That poses its own problem as typically, men’s arches are different to women. But wait, it gets worse! Up until buying shoes last year, I was a men’s UK/German 9, men’s US/AUS 10, Women’s US/AUS 11, European 42 and Japanese/Chinese 27.5. Now, most women’s shoes only go up to a 10 in Aus. A few brands started making regular styles in 11. But no one really offers half sizes. Last year I bought myself many pairs of new shoes where my UK/GER and US/AUS men’s sizes have stayed the same, but my US/AUS women’s sizes has jumped to a 12 and my EUR size is now a 43.

In short, yes. Most dress shoe manufacturers increase the length by a half size for every increase in width (i.e. the length and width of a 10D is ~= 9.5E. This is to maintain the proportionality of the silhouette. Certain work boot manufacturers won’t do this.

@@dandiehm8414 So many AE shoe stores near me I like to go see. Some shoe lasts do not fit my feet well - others do. Some need smaller sizes. The 65 Last is a favorite.

Half sizes wouldn't require shops to invest double the money, as they would also order half as many of each size. They would, however, have double the SKUs to manage and the manufacturer would need to produce lower numbers of shoes for each sizing setup. Not huge problems but unfortunately thet small cost saving won the day.

After WW2 some shoes stores would use an x-ray machine to x-ray peoples fit while they were wear the shoes to check on the fit. This lasted until someone pointed out the problem which using such a devise by untrained shop staff.
There is a Medieval document which has illustrations of typical village scenes for each month of the year. Interestingly many of the people depicted in the winter months are not wearing shoes because they did not want to ruin them in the mud and water while working in the fields. Imagine having to work barefoot in a wet muddy field in the middle of winter.

Yes, buying ANY shoes has become Bizarre.
A men's actual Size 13 can be Size 10.5 in another!
I quit wearing Nike shoes because on my huge feet, the shoes seemed to have a timer on them, and would fall apart at exactly 1 year of age.
Nike shoes also are notorious for having non-standard sizing.....different styles would be all over the place in sizing.
That's why I found manufacturers that had shoes that I liked (most important!), and also had consistent sizing. That's the key.
Men's USA size 13 should be consistent in dress shoes and all shoes, but they aren't. I suppose that means there hasn't been a huge lawsuit that someone won & made millions on a successful judgment yet. That seems to be the only uniformity cudgel that would work in this litigious country. lol 🤣

For anyone who doesn't have stores selling quality shoes around them, I highly suggest buying used shoes to start off, then keep adjusting until you find your proper size. You can sell the poor fitting shoes off to recover a bit of your money later

One thing: It's not true that for most of the time shoes were bespoke. For most of the time lasts were even symmetrical. (Right and left made on the same last.) So no, bespoke as we know it was always a luxury. And shoemakers would use existing lasts.

Oh and on the brannock: I say ignore it and just try on shoes. It only gives two measurements but you don't get forefoot volume, instep, heel curve, heel width... Just to name a few things. For example: I've got 2 sizes higher htb than htt. It's not possible to wear a shoe this size with my feet length. Not only is 2 full sizes up way too much volume, it also affects stride because the tip is too long. And creasing will be way higher with more empty volume. And after trying on a lot of shoes guess which ones are my most comfortable? The ones closer to my htt size of course. 😄

Honestly now that habits are evermore shifting towards online shopping…might be worth it to try to get a government - or even better the largest economical and political entity on the planet: the EU - to standardise shoe sizing since even the same size within the same system is not necessarily the same depending on manufacturer - or even model lines within one brand…
People from the EU please do us unfortunate non-EU citizens the favour and write your representatives ❤
Imagine that…once you know your size you are guaranteed the fit…a consumer’s dream apparently only attainable with regulation, of all things…because for some odd reason the private sector fails consistently to deliver.

Funny this video is here. I have to keep telling my brother that there is a such thing as a size 7 mens. But because we live in the US size 7 are 7y so grade schools which are smaller but the same length. He tells me "I worked at the shoe store, so i know!" But he doesn't ☠️

Sizing is nonsense. and there needs to be the AMA and Podiatry assoc to come in and standardize it. Theres no reason this cant be done... Not to mention the dress shoe brands, vs Pacific Northwest, UK Northhampton and Continental Europe differences... Just needs to be standardized and regulated...
