My great great grandfather emigrated to USA as a 14 year old during the tyranny of famine and penal laws but he came back to Ireland with his family and money and bought up land and opened a pub called the cotton ball in Mayfield he fought in American civil war on Yankees side . My great grandmother was born in America and I'm born and reared in Birmingham England oh how the wild geese have moved around . Cork city always my other home . God is good let's not forget our faith in Christ was always our strength through it all
15 years... on her own... how did they survive a totally different world. We should be on our knees thanking them for all they did for the ones at home. Scraping a few dollars to send home with a letter if they could write most pretending that things were great. And the homesickness ... bless them all. 😢❤
Ah darlin you have romanticised this certainly beyond reality. Annie Moore was 17 not 15, her parents booked underage fare for her, she followed the rest of the family within a year of them going and tragically she married a bakers boy and became obese, had a number of children ending up dead by 50 being brought out of an upstairs window unable to be brought out any other way from their house to be buried never having left the impoverished lower East side Manhattan
Even if she was 17 and her two younger brothers were with her can you imagine what it was like for them???? Nothing to romanticise about there??? It’s belittling them to say so… not just Irish emigrants all emigrants leaving poverty stricken lives to try to better themselves in the USA …bless the USA 😢
Moore arrived at Ellis Island from County Cork, Ireland, aboard the Guion Line steamship Nevada on January 1, 1892. Her brothers, Anthony and Philip, who journeyed with her, had just turned 15 and 12, respectively.[2][4] As the first person to pass inspection at the newly opened facility, she was presented with an American $10 gold piece from an American official.[4]
Born Irish but spent my life in California . It’s only now I’m Appreciation my Irish culture . Love this song . Maybe I’ll return to Ireland . In honor of my spouse Maury Hirshberg , everyday my heart bleeds . I miss and love you so much .
Beautiful, thought-provoking song. It can be applied to immigrants from so many countries. Though I'm not Irish, I've visited Ireland 12 times. My paternal grandparents emmigrated (separately) from Hungary, speaking no English. Cheers to all immigrants who had the strength and faith to seek a better future.
As an emigrant who returned after 20 yrs this song means a lot to me Sean would be enough but then you had to add Delores I was floored such soul thank you and may god bless you

I was fortunate enough to visit Ireland twice so far, and I grew up listening to a lot of Dolores Keane. The feeling walking along the cliffs near howth, on the only sunny day we had during our school trip, listening to this... I truly left a piece of myself there.
On The First Day On January, Eighteen Ninety-Two, They Opened Ellis Island And They Let The People Through. And The First To Cross The Treshold Of That Isle Of Hope And Tears, Was Annie Moore From Ireland Who Was All Of Fifteen Years. Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears, Isle Of Freedom, Isle Of Fears, But It's Not The Isle You Left Behind. That Isle Of Hunger, Isle Of Pain, Isle You'll Never See Again But The Isle Of Home Is Always On Your Mind. In A Little Bag She Carried All Her Past And History, And Her Dreams For The Future In The Land Of Liberty. And Courage Is The Passport When Your Old World Disappears But There's No Future In The Past When You're Fifteen Years When They Closed Down Ellis Island In Nineteen Fourty-Three, Seventeen Million People Had Come There For Sanctuary. And In Springtime When I Came Here And I Stepped Onto It's Piers, I Thought Of How It Must Have Been When You're Fifteen Years.
Very melodious beautiful song ♪I am Japanese. Conflicts of hearts that leave their hometown for beautiful melodies and hope and sadness and mind their hometown. I was immigrated to Brazil in South America with full of Japanese hope. Many people who were frustrated. Only a few people succeeded. So I sympathize with this song.
Just passed this on to Pat Clerkin who's father left Newbliss to Liverpool for Ellis Island many years ago.Great to hear Sean and Dolores Keane together again.
Genial. Había escuchado la canción en la magnífica voz de Sean y alguna vez tb en la de Dolores, pero hasta ahora no había escuchado esta versión a dúo...aunque me gustan los dos, soy algo más de Sean. Gracias por el video
Still happening 2day unfortunately for many young and old irish citizen here and abroad because there still poverty giving to us all working class family's elderly young and adding to it all now its not the government's island nor mine or ours it's gods 🙏 😢 shamrocks the luck of never giving up and hope for one and all ❤❤❤❤❤❤peace
Let nobody of Irish heritage disparage America. In that dark time of, and immediately after, the Famine, America took in ours when the alternative was death by hunger, not only the Famine but the opportunity taken by absentee landlords for clearances.
They need to reopen from all the undocumented . Stop using the undocumented as cattle as revenue . Free the undocumented including the many Irish living in America
my moms name was Annie Moore! not the same girl, but my Grampa William Moore and his bride Mary , Molly comer immigrated in 1914. Grampa lied about his age and joined the us navy in Wii served and that lead him to a future here !
