  • On Easter Sunday 31st March 2024 the annual Easter Parade was held in Bendigo as part of the Bendigo Easter Festival. The parade sees over two hours of floats and displays from local organisations and institutions spread some easter cheer. The parade saw the Bendigo Tramways run an altered shuttle 'park & ride' service with the line split into two. On the south side of the line trams operated between the Bendigo CBD at Charing Cross to the Central Deborah Gold Line, and on the north side trams operated between Chapel Street and Bendigo North.
In this video we see trams along the Bendigo Tramway operating the altered Easter services. We start along the southern side of the route where we see trams no.7 (a J Class tram built in 1915) and no.880 (a SW6 Class tram built in 1942). On the northern side of the route we see trams no.610 (a Y1 Class tram built in 1930) and no.918 (a SW6 Class tram built in 1946) at Lake Weeroona and the Bridge Street loop.
We also see some clips of the Parade, including emergency vehicles from the CFA & the SES, and Chinese Dragons representing Bendigo's rich Chinese history from the days of the Gold Rush. At the end we see the main attraction; Dai Gum Loong. At 125 meters in length it's believed that he is the longest Chinese dragon in the world.
This is the first time the Bendigo Tramways have featured on my channel in over a decade, but I do want to pay them a visit in the future to get some more coverage. The first trams began in Bendigo in 1890 and like many tramways in Australia closed in the years after World War II, with the Bendigo trams closing as a public transport service in April 1972.
Not long after closing however The Bendigo Trust trading as the Bendigo Tramways took over the trams to operate them as a tourist service, and remain operating to this day. The line is just under 4km in length and utilises most of the original line from Golden Square to North Bendigo and the depot. It is notable for being Australia's largest preserved tramway.
