This performance is what made me fall in love with jazz and made me want to learn it. Julian completely changed how I look at the guitar. Please do more reactions to Julian! He’s truly one of the greatest guitar players ever and very underrated. The amp he played here was little 5 watt vintage Fender Champ. It’s from 1957 if remember correctly. One of the best tones I’ve ever heard.
Absolutely same! When this came out in 2016 and I watched it because it looked like beautiful cinematography in the thumbnail, it literally changed my life. I have since watched possibly every Julian Lage video in existence and seen him live three times. This is just what it's all about...
I've heard Lage across 3 electric guitars...Telecaster, signature Collings, Gretsch Duo Jet...and through a range of amps...generally tube and vintage...and the tone is *always* impeccable. Clearly he places a lot of thought and emphasis on it. But certainly one of the best currently doing it...often deceptively simple...no-one else has his *feel* and touch and taste and dynamism.
I've been losing my mind over Julian's playing for about 6 months straight. He plays so well it almost hurts. His expression is so clear, as is his intention. Great work, glad to see someone reacting to this special performance.
He is astounding. He is just one of the most exciting musicians to have come along. A prodigy too so he has been around for quite a while. Great Beato interview too. Played with Gary Burton
While I don't have the same interest in jazz that would make me want to listen to this again and again, I have deep respect and admiration for the musicianship and wish I had that ability.
Obviously, the introduction is incredible, but Julian ends it so delicately and opens up space for scott i such a way that the audience FORGETS TO CLAP. Musicianship. He is one of a kind. Broke the mold after him.
Back again...I just want to say that your up-front analysis was fantastic. You really caught so many of the nuances on your first listen. Offline, though, I hope you've had a chance to hear this performance many times....it just keeps giving and giving, listen after listen, especially when you know what's coming, it makes some of the transitions even more impressive. Great work, so glad you're one of the view to cover this performance.
Can you do more formal reactions to jazz? Your reactions are essentially masterclasses. Julian is an astounding musician. He is his music. Not only technically astounding, but a superb arranger, composer, and improviser. Check out his solo acoustic stuff!!
Thanks for you insight in music. It's really appreaciated. May i suggest a song? It's brand new and absolutely beautiful. Song is "Let The Truth Speak" by Earthside (Daniel Tompkins from Tesseract) on vocals. I would love to see what emotions this song brings to you. Cheers from Chile, teacher!
Please react to thornhill’s cover of supermassive black hole. You liked one of their songs, and I’ll bet you’ll like this one. His vocal range is insane!!!
Here is another great trio version of this tune. Your comment about feeling the beat in your body is relevant here since they do the song at a very slow tempo, which is a lot harder than some people think. Also they are not in the same room, they are connected over the internet. ruclips.net/video/oWgN_zXV-FI/видео.htmlsi=8gErQPM08by0W5mY

I can't stop listening to Julian! Yeah! I discovered him 2-3 months ago and he's pretty exclusive in my playlist. I am obsessed.
you are me from 8mths ago. It gets easier, you'll get your life back, but it'll be a minute.

Quite simply one of the most inspired and inspiring performance I ever witnessed. Finest improvised guitar playing I know of.
I see Julian live any chance I can. He’s other worldly.
I saw him live once in Madrid and it was amazing. 100% best concert I've been to.
The only guitar player I know who can improvise in counterpoint.
Check out Antoine Boyer for some awesome counterpoint guitar.
Thinking and improvising in counterpoint isn't actually as difficult or uncommon as you may think.
Love your reaction too. I love how great music moves you. Your reaction is inspiring too
He produces the most incredible sounds that I've ever heard come from a guitar.

I love Lage. His guitar playing touch my soul.
There’re people that are talented, and then there are people who are virtuosos. You can’t get better than this.
It’s truly beyond
Sooooo thought you might be interested if you havent seen it yet. Dance Gavin Dance released a new single......spoiler alerts. Its pretty solid.
