      I know the "answer" song, by Joyce Harris with The Slades , " I Cheated" (1960) Domino # R-903, composed by both Don Burch (of the Slades) and Joyce Harris. I've heard that Joyce Webb was singing with The Slades, as an added background vocalist, when the group recorded their 1958 recording of, "You Cheated", which was a return favor, since The Slades backed Joyce Webb on her recordings of, "Right Here" and "After You've Gone", a year earlier. I'd like to hear the Joyce Webb version of, "You Cheated", I didn't know that she cut a record of it. Thanks. - MrRJDB1969

    On this day in 1958 {August 14th} the Slades performed "You Cheated (You Lied)" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'...
    At the time the song was at #48 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, the week before it was at #42 and that was also it's peak position , according to Billboard that was also it's first week on the Top 100, the song re-entered the Top 100 on September 15th at #81 and spent a total of 12 weeks on the Top 100...
    Just the day before on August 13th, the Shields appeared on 'Bandstand' and performed their version of "You Cheated", and on October 6th their version peaked at #12 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Best Selling in Stores chart...

    This original version is a very, very good version, a hauntingly raw gem. I can definitely appreciate their effort. Too bad The Slades didn't have better production talent in the studio with them out there in Austin on this song. Non the less, The Shields version absolutely nails it, in every way. How can you go wrong with Frankie Ervin on lead, Jessie Belvin on falsetto and Johnny 'Guitar' Watson on bass vocals, to name a few? And Ernie Freeman's band backing. That's why The Shields version is THE classic it is. Hands down.

      Opinions are what they are.... just opinions . On another note, same scenario, I guess we could all agree, that when The Diamonds recorded their version of, "Little Darlin" " , originally recorded by The Gladiolas, they pretty well buried the original version completely. The Diamonds nailed that song perfectly and it was an all-time hit recording. I find it interesting though, The Diamonds are often criticized today, for having recorded a song originally recorded by someone black and are somehow accused of "stealing" from them, and yet, in the case of, The Shields, who were black, and had a hit record with a song which was written and originally recorded by a white group, they are admired for it. These double standards are laughable . With all this said, since the beginning of recorded music, all written music did have a tendency to be recorded by multiple performers, many times over and in the same year, but on different record labels. I have proof of this and skin colors of the composer or of the original a recording artist, made no difference. If a song was written, it could and did get recorded by all who either liked the song and or who saw hit potential in it. So, I don't have any ill feelings for The Shields for having covered The Slades original , NOR do I have any bad feelings towards The Diamonds for recording their version of The Gladiolas song. It was just the way music was back then and how it was from the very beginning in the history of recorded music ; which isn't debatable. As for which version is "better", well, that's completely up to the listener isn't it.

    • @MrRJDB1969
      @MrRJDB1969  5 лет назад +1

      Also, Ritchie Valens recorded a version of, "We Belong Together" on the Del-Fi label late in 1958, a song which was originally recorded by black recording stars, Robert & Johnny on Old Town in December of 1957. I wouldn't say that the Valens version was anywhere near the quality of the original version, would you ? How does his cover of, "Framed" , originally recorded by The Coasters, but composed by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, match up ? ... not very well. But again, it's up to the listener to decide.

      Personal opinions are just opinions, that is true. But withstanding the test of time, that is a true barometer. With the Shields and the Diamonds, using an almost identical musical arrangement for their covers, their superior studio production is the difference between a legendary classic and a forgotten gem. On the other hand, the test of time wasn't so kind to the Crew Cuts or Georgia Gibbs and their covers of the Chord's 'Sha-boom' or Etta James' 'Roll with me Henry', equal production value had no bearing. Speaking of equal production value, one can look at Elvis Presley's cover/copy of Carl Perkin's (in my opinion, superior) 'Blue Suede Shoes', which one is the classic? As for Richie Valens' cover (or for that matter, The Videls' version) of Robert and Johnny's 'We Belong Together', they really were different musical arrangements and productions, a duo or full vocal group always sounds different from a soloist with no backing vocals. He made it his, not a copy. But, of course, the test of time, not our opinions, has decided for posterity what is the legendary classic and what is the forgotten gem, or just plain forgotten.

      "Sh-Boom" by The Crew Cuts held the # 1 spot on the record charts for several weeks after it was released back in 1954, where-as, The Chords version did not . The Chords version was later used in 2006 cartoon film, "Cars", though, which finally got it some recognition. I personally like both versions, since The Crew Cuts used a full big band to back them on their version and The Chords used a basic rhythm section with a tenor sax break , they were completely different treatments and yet, it was the same song. With that said though, The Crew Cuts did have the hit recording of, "Sh-Boom", which has been used in films and television programs over the years. The Crew Cuts had other recordings, which The Chords did not, that did hit the charts as well, such as, "Angels In The Sky" , written by white songwriter-singer, Dick Glasser, which was given a cover by a black group, The Monarchs, not long after The Crew Cuts version was released. Both of these recordings and the one done a year earlier by, Tony Martin, were themselves covers, since the composer of the song, Dick Glasser, also recorded it in 1953 on the Triple A label. People today are confused and completely off base, when it comes to the music business and trends, before the mid 1960's, all popular songs or songs seen as potential hits, were recorded several times over, in the same year or in the years that followed by any and all. There was no "stealing", songs were written, people recorded them, and money was either made, or it wasn't. The record buyer determined which verison made it or did not, in many ways . As for The Videls version of, "We Belong Together", it wasn't recorded until 1963, with a tempo change, etc. etc. , which was completely different than the Robert & Johnny version or the Valens cover. Someone will like one version or the other, or maybe, they will like all the versions, because they simply like the song itself and versions or singer doesn't matter all that much. In regards to, "Blue Suede Shoes", that's a tough one, since I like both singers, I like the song, and I like both versions, but I agree, the Perkins version has a bit of rawness to it, which the Presley version doesn't, so, maybe the Perkins version has an edge over the latter (Perkins version hit at #4 in 1956, while Presley's peaked at #24) . But again, it's all up to the listener to decide. As for Georgia Gibbs, I liked her better when she was, Fredda Gibson (* who was Jewish and not using her birth name), and singing with the big bands of the 1940's . I personally don't care for the song, "Roll With Me Henry" (aka "Dance With Me Henry"), so either version could be good or bad to someone else. The outcome of the "test of time" theory , when not influenced by those in Hollywood, media, education, etc. etc. today, could and would be quite different, if just left to the memories of those who were there back then and lived in those times . What we see today as a "hit" version of something, because it was used in a film, say 12 years ago, doesn't necessarily mean it was the "hit" version at the time a song was recorded and released to the public.

    Which is “better” is a matter of personal taste. The Slades were teen-angers, all but one of them still in high school. The Shields were professionals, brought together by producer George Motola for the express purpose of covering this song for Dot records. Dot had offered to take over distribution for the Slades’ version, which was rejected.
    Shields version is more polished, I agree, but I prefer the Slades version because it’s the one I heard as a Texas high-schooler. From a musical point of view, I think the Shangri-Las were better, to be honest.

    The slades version of you cheated is far better than the shields version, the lead singer Don Birch puts so much emotion to the song, and the harmony of the Slades is second to none. I am a singer and when I sing You Cheated to the general public, I sing the Slades version only. The cover version by the Shields mean nothing to me. The Slades always knew what was best for the song. Respectfully: Henry Pope

      I agree with with you 100%. Don Burch, the writer of, "You Cheated" and the lead voice of The Slades, did handle the lyrics better than Frankie Ervin of The Shields, in my opinion. I did like The Shields and all the other covers of, "You Cheated" though, since I do like the song itself. With that said and if ever asked, which version of the song do I prefer, I always say, The Slades version.
