  • I used to think a truly high performance computer meant lots of fans and lots of noise. Then I discovered water cooling. If you really want to overclock your PC and push it to the brink of its power, water cooling is the best way to make that happen, while keeping the entire thing whisper quiet.

    Watercooling, for when you computer gets so hot from running everything on the highest settings, you need to cool it down like a nuclear reactor.

      +Neil Price And that's just what I want. My PC is hot enough to heat the entire section of my room without the watercooling.

      +Abe McLaughlin without watercooling, my pc would probably get overclocked as hell and stop working, then proceed to burn my desk...

    Thanks for this video. I've been doing water cooling over ten years and stopped for a while. This actually gave me many tips that I didn't know. Such as cleaning the tubes and radiator with hot distilled water. I started this venture with cheap poor materials, diy methods and a bad understanding of material longevity. My first build lead to some serious disasters, which actually didn't kill any hardware. Some more Noob tips are: Never damage a barb's tip (it will leak), you should use a plastic hose clamp for barbs to be safe, do not use glues to bind high pressure areas, make sure to use 0-rings or teflon tape for the fittings, the fan should pull air out of the radiator (not push in like in the video ;)), finally consider using a T-line instead of a reservoir because it is simpler.

      Still, you could possibly drop the fittings on the gpu or something, and who wants to clean water out of every nook and cranny. An inexperienced person could really mess up something. And i see that nowadays there are many people who are new to building a pc and i'm one of them so you have to take that into consideration.

    • @stevewayne1359
      @stevewayne1359 10 лет назад

      no risk whatsoever. As long as you tighten up the clamps on the tubing, the system is completely sealed. The waterblocks are a self contained unit, identical to an air cooled heatsink, with the exception instead of fins for the air to travel through, it has small fins for water. NO water touches ANY electrical component on the PC.

    • @mattkessel36
      @mattkessel36 10 лет назад +5

      Chocolate is electrically conductive. Strawberry isn't. However, blueberry milk is not conductive yet it has the best heat conductivity of all of the milks. You might have to look around for it though. It's kinda hard to find.
      You could also make your own blueberry milk. Here is a recipe.

      You don't have to refill every 6 months if you spent enough time making sure everything is cleaned out. There are people who leave their loops for years that are still fine. People refill every 6ish months to perform a routine maintenance. It's not all that different from removing the dust from a CPU cooler, except that you also need to refill the loop while also cleaning the radiators and fans.

    it should be noted that in situations like this, the refillable reservoir, like in your cars cooling system, should be the highest point of the cooling system. This allows you to bleed air out of the system, and prevents air pockets in the cooling system.

      Devastating Thomsaw doesn't work as good as water in that style, water has better heat properties, in other words it absorbs and dissipates heat more quickly than oil, the reason why oil submersion baths work good, is because the way oil (specially mineral oil) works, it spreads the heat throughout its volume (thats why the mobo is submersed in the tank full of oil) reaching a safe and workable ambient temp, for some home server applications, you may not even need a radiator, all depends on what you are using! pretty much for heat transference you go AIR

      8raffi you remove the use of heat sinks on cpu and gpu which cause most of the noise and you can under-volt the fans in your system to make the quieter without compromising that much cooling performance. with a full air cooled system fans have to be on most of the time no matter what causing more vibrations and noise

    • @NafanyaZX
      @NafanyaZX 10 лет назад +10

      The problem with air, is that you have to mount heatsinks (which are the same things as radiators) directly onto the components. And therefore, you can't physically fit as large heatsinks, as it is possible with radiators. Think about a system with 3x 240mm radiators. Or you can even install a MASSIVE radiator outside of your case that doesn't even require fans.
      What makes a fan noisy, is the speed it's spinning at. Massive radiators don't require as much airflow, therefore the fans don't have to spin as quicky. And THAT is where the silence comes from. On top of that, you get far superior cooling.
      But, as it is the case with everything high end, it does come at a price. It's pushing the limits, so it needs to be maintained. If you're an enthhusiast, who thinks about this 24/7, you don't find this much trouble to go through. Especially, if you compare it to other things. If you want to eat, you have to go get the groceries, cook your meal and wash the dishes and the frying pan/cooking pot. Same thing each time. Now that's a hassle.

But around the shop, those guys would make most engineers look like idiots.

    I find the big custom kits really unnecessary. About a year ago i upgraded my air cooling for a corsair hydro series kit (h80i), they’re completely self-contained, with no filling or maintenance needed, and installation is straightforward. When i was using air my processor would run extremely hot (AMD 8350) But now has idle temps of 15 degrees and never runs hotter than 40-50c on full load and it cost me £40/$70 which in my opinion was a complete bargain and i would recommend to any gamer.

      in cooling an electric car motor, in a gas engine water can be in direct contact with the aluminium block but not in a electronic device as a microprocessor or the coils of an electric motor, that's the problem.

    • @SoulDragonWithFlow
      @SoulDragonWithFlow 10 лет назад +1

      The water isnt in direct contact with anything electrical. There is just a copper block over the cpu heat spreader, (remember the cpu itself is tiny and most of what you see on the chip is just the heat sink), and water being pumped over the top of it to a radiator. It's like putting a sealed jacket over the metal casing of an electric motor pumping water through it and cooling it like that. The water never actually touches the motor itself.

      Well, they are also louder,(especialy with stock fans, witch adds 20-30$ to the total cost if you wan´t some good ones.) lower, preformance, non-upgradeable, lower quality and a bit overpriced for what you get (Aluminum radiator, shitty pump and bad/loud fans and thin tubing) For mantience, if you buy premade cooling liquids you don´t have to bother for 3-4 years and if you haven´t upgraded your computer by that time i don´t see the point of getting watercooling.
      And i think if you can install a cpu cooler you can probably connect some tubing and fill upp a resorvoir.
      The only all in one watercooler that i woud really recomend is the Swiftech H220 whitch fixes all the problems above.

      distilled water is non conductive -.-

    • @alanbrown9823
      @alanbrown9823 10 лет назад +16

      Elucidator
      Distilled water is only non-conductive as long as no foreign ions dissolve into it - such as the aluminium and copper metals it passes over. Better to add an anticorrosive (usually silicate based) or engine antifreeze to prevent this happening). Water isn't known as the universal solvent for nothing.
      There are very few practically available "non-conductive fluids" which are relatively inert (light machine oil works, but its thermal capacity is far less than water and it may be flammable) and cheap (Flourinert would work but the stuff is ultra expensive) which even come close to water's 1600J per degree C thermal capacity.
      IN a previous life we used to use triple-distilled water in a cooling loop for 1940s-era shortwave radio transmitters - 100kW PEP, with the anodes directly immersed in water and running at about 50,000V. 100kW out = 600kW in for this sort of gear, hence the requirement for ultra pure water - It would only last a few days before metal ion contamination would require flush/replacement.

      Alan Brown see this is why i get nervous to do a full water cool build. I got the h100i by corsair (closed loop) for that reason. I figure at least if it goes it non -conducive and warranties my fried pc parts.

    • @shobyvinci
      @shobyvinci 10 лет назад +2

      AndurilNarsil1 well, i moved from a 4 fan push pull h100i setup to a real liquid cooling solution. My day and night difference definition got redefined :/

    • @alanbrown397
      @alanbrown397 10 лет назад +1

      AndurilNarsil1 Recheck your warranty. There is an exclusion for consequential damages (ie, what happens when the contents of the loop end up outside the loop). In addition, bear in mind that long term the sealed systems seem no more reliable than custom ones.
      That said: Apart from contamination and assuming your hard drives don't get immersed, nothing intrinsically bad will happen if your board gets soaked by coolant, although the computer might stop if there's too much leakage current between tracks. The best way to treat such board contamination is to take it out of the PC and dump it in a bucket of water. Wash off and dry for a few days. What do you thnk they use to clean the things in the factory before/after the wave soldering process?
      The biggest problem with dissimilar metals in the loop and no anticorrosive in the mix is that copper will dissolve into the liquid (possibly destroying fine-finned heat exchangers as used in the CPU block, or putting holes in a copper radiator) and plate out around aluminium parts (possibly clogging up heat exchanger fins and impeding water flow.). It's best to try and avoid dissimilar metals if at all possible.

    Umm, weird question but where did you get that performance display on the front of your case. That looks really helpful for temp monitoring and OC.
    A more relevant question could I use Mineral Oil? Its non-conductive so leaks wouldn't be so bad and it takes allot more to heat it up.

    I would seriously recommend some plumbing tape for the treads of your fittings of your inlet and outlet pieces. Simple plumbing 101. I know this is new to pc's but when your mixing water and electricity, its best to take extra safety precautions. I saw someone mention anti-freeze, yes anti-freeze is x5 times as better @ cooling your car and pc than water. For better looks you silly silver piece could be replaced with some pride. Buy a silver coin and drop that beauty in the water. :D

      re: "I saw someone mention anti-freeze, yes anti-freeze is x5 times as better @ cooling your car and pc than water."
      This is completely incorrect. Antifreeze has about half the specific heat (heat capacity) of pure water. It's used in cars as it has a lower freezing point and higher boiling point than water, so parking outdoors in the winter won't freeze nor driving in the summer boil it, but for an indoor computer where the water should never come remotely close to the boiling point, it's unnecessary and due to the lower specific heat a far worse coolant than just water. The commercial computer coolants on the market are distilled/deionized water with the tiny amounts of biocide, corrosion inhibitors etc. pre-mixed in.

      1. It'll turn to gas as soon as you take it out of the thermos.

    There's a reason people use actual coolants over normal gallon jugs of water. It's because of how it reacts to the cool air it comes in contact with. Water takes A LOT more power to cool down, and is less effective, especially if it's just cheap gallons of water from the grocery store.
