  • Students ask alot what power settings are appropriate for an instrument approach. The answer, like so many answers, is that it depends, but there are some general guidelines we can follow.

This exact issue literally came up for me less than a week ago. Perfect timing.

Great video! Flying to airports on Colorado's front range, it feels like I'm usually holding about 1850 RPM for an 85KT IAS, 500 fpm descent.

My instructor disliked the * 5 to calculate the fpm. Another way is to divide add a 0 to the answer. Eg 100 knot ground speed / 2. Add a 0 to the end 500. Becomes a lot simpler math with some more of the odd speeds.

So, unrelated but why shouldn't we touch the screens? Are they not touchscreens or is it to keep the finger prints off and therefore less glare?

I’ve never used RPMs on the glide slope, only IAS. If RPM is important (or in this case critical), why isn’t it indicated on the PFD?

It is not critical. And because it is an engine parameter, it is part of the EMS screen. On some systems like the G3X, both manifold and RPM are displayed on the PFD so it is not always on the MFD.

    Mmmm, Catalina!

80 knots seems fast for a 172 on approach. Sure you have the glide slope all worked out but your touchdown is going to have excess energy.

Another confusing video how Power controls Altitude or V/S and Speed is controlled with Pitch. Pitch ONLY controls speed in a fixed power situation. Power Off (ie engine failure), or Full power (ie initial climb). Switch on the Auto Pilot and it will demonstrate this perfectly. Fly something more advanced and you will see that this is the only way to control the aircraft.
Teach people from day one how to fly like a Pro, even if they only every will get a PPL (with or without IR)
