It's odd, isn't it, how Thistleclaw died offscreen? How Bluestar just passingly mentions that the main antagonist of her super edition died in a border scuffle with Riverclan.... Why?
If you know anything about me, you know that I HATE Spottedleaf's Heart. I think, very passionately, that Vicky Holmes, Working Partners, and Harper Collins should publically both apologize for its sloppy handling of the VERY serious subject matter of pedophilia, but decanonize it and stop publishing it. The intention of novella, to explain why Thistleclaw went to the Dark Forest, makes sense, and I truly believe that this platform COULD have effectively handled the material in a way that could explain to young readers the danger of child grooming, and offer them examples of warning signs to look out for. Instead, it fails to properly villify Thistleclaw's actions- in the climax of the story, when Spottedpaw discovers Thistleclaw is training in the Dark Forest, she asks him to choose between her and the Dark Forest, and he chooses training in the Dark Forest. Spottedpaw then becomes a medicine cat to escape him, offering her a reasonable explanation why she cannot take a mate. Essentially, it makes it seem that the thing he did wrong was NOT CHOOSING HER, not the fact he had been ROMANTICALLY INVOLVED WITH A CHILD.
So. Generally speaking, I refuse to acknowledge it as canon. I don't want it in my work. Not my stories, not my art, not my maps. But.... with Redtail's Debt, his very own Novella, announced and coming, one day, I had a thought: what if Spottedleaf told her littermate what had been done to her? What if the deputy of Thunderclan decided banishment wasn't enough- that pedophiles need to be DEALT with. At this point, I made this comic: draikinator.tumblr.com/post/17...
It was pretty popular! I was very proud of it. For me, it offered a way to come to terms with spottedleafs heart, in a way. I chose to use Whitestorm for this video and the comic, because I like the idea of Whitestorm, someone who had briefly been a denmate of Redtail and Spottedleaf, choosing her over a father he now knew something terrible about. However, I theorize that in Redtail's Debt, this WILL actually happen, BUT, it will be TIGERCLAW, and after they've killed Thistleclaw, Tigerclaw will tell Redtail he owes him, foreshadowing that Tigerclaw would later also secretly kill Redtail and blame it on a border scuffle with Riverclan.

If this actually happens in Redtail's Debt, it would probably be one of my favorite novellas. Even though Spottedleaf's Heart was a pretty bad book in a lot of ways (total understatement but that's another topic for another day), if they could somehow fix it by doing something like this, it would really help. Even if this doesn't happen, I'm hype to figure out exactly what happens in Redtail's Debt.

This is a way more interesting theory than Thistle just dying off randomly in the background. I recently tried to read through spottedleaf's heart, but I was just too uncomfortable that i didn't even finish up to half of it. Just the fact that Spottedleaf was just so naive about it made it much more realistic, but as you said, the way they "villainize" Thistleclaw is just terrible; thus making it one of the most poorly executed books I have seen in a while.

This is a perfect head-canon, and I really hope that it’ll happen in Redtail’s Debt! It’ll both expand on Spottedleaf and Redtail’s characters, as well as give a deeper reason for why Tigerclaw murdered Redtail at the fight against RiverClan.
Also, I have a feeling that one of the reasons Redtail’s Debt is written is to make something meaningful come out of the huge mess that was Spottedleaf’s Heart. (For the character developments of Redtail, Spottedleaf, and Tigerstar)

In my option, I think that when spottedleaf gave him a choice and when he chose the dark forest, she realized that he didn't love her and decided to be a medicine cat and tell her brother so she can try to make right.

Actually, the "original" Thistleclaw wasn't from Bluestar's Prochecy either. The "original" Thistleclaw was the one in Forest of Secrets; you know, the cat who "took many of Bluestar's lives".
All in all, he sucks, he was always evil, he deserved the Dark Forest.

I love the idea of Redtail sort of being the protective older brother to Spottedleaf. The whole thing with Thistleclaw and Spottedleaf is just creepy on so many levels. And I think after seeing just how battle hungry Thistleclaw can be, Redtail saw him as too dangerous to be left to his own devices. I love the theory.
Yes this is so good! If this was canon, then Redtail would probably have more character development and we would get to know him better, and I hope that Redtail's debt will be better then Spottedleaf's heart, that book was not that good and stuff was just thrown in there.

I just came after watching Moonkitti’s video about Spottedleaf’s heart, ironically, and this was the best thing I could have watched after. ”Thistleclaw died in a border scuffle” just seems so unnatural and out of nowhere. This adds more character to Redtail and this idea seems much better anyway.
I thought it would also help explain the oddness of redtail not telling nyone who killed him! I wonder often why redtail didn't tell bluestar or spottedleaf that it was tigerclaw that murdered him and not oakheart- but if he had killed thistleclaw he might be feeling guilty or struggling with like, he was murdered the same way he killed someone, did he do the right thing? And eventually realize he did, but it would be a good reason why he may not be sure if he has the right to interfere

i actually considered adding a little after credits scene where spottedleaf was preparing thistleclaw's body for his vigil while redtail and whitestorm slept off their injuries in her den, and she would find redtail's fur in thistleclaw's claws and she would gasp, but then, look relieved, and then hide it. i kind of like the idea that everybody like, knows, but theyre all like "oh yeah... border scuffle. yup. thats what happened. lol"

@@Draikinator I think Bluestar would be angered if they tried to get her in on this. Yes, she hated Thistleclaw, but as a leader she would likely think of the Warrior Code. She broke it in the past and faced the result, and so she would prefer not to break it again. "A warrior does not need to kill to win his/her battles."
I like the idea of Spottedleaf finding out afterwards. She would at first think about whether StarClan would approve, and then decide they would, as the forest would be rid of the dangerous tom for a long time, and she would feel free. I do really like the concept you have here, and certainly hope for a similar plot for Redtail's Debt. I have high expectations for the book, as we need it to make up for Spottedleaf's Heart and also I think we all deserve some good insight on Redtail's character.

I like the concept of RedTail being more involved with his sister but having RedTail and WhiteStorm murder ThistleClaw seems very dark and uncharacteristic of these cats? Both Red and White were level headed and reasonable warriors so I personally find it unlikely that they would do this.
Even if they did then I would assume they both felt horrible guilt of having the blood of their clan mate over their paws.
But I can agree SpottedLeaf's heart was kinda garbage

I don't really take Spotted Leaf's Heart as cannon anyways. They built a character out of Thistleclaw which defined him as a loving but overly aggressive character. No one can convince me that ThistleClaw didn't love Snow Fur and his son. So, when he loses both, (as Bluestar very much took White Storm from him) obviously he would turn to the only other thing he knows for comfort; fighting. In the cat world, female cats sexually mature far faster than human women. HOWEVER, Spotted Leaf is clearly still very young. If anything, I could see Thistleclaw MANIPULATING Spotted Leaf in ANY WAY OTHER than romantic. Thistleclaw did some bad things after the death of his mate. However, I could never see him as a child predator. This book is an injustice to his character as it paints him the wrong way. There is a difference between predation and arrogance. Yes, Thistleclaw failed to walk down the right path. But there is a line. And, if I understand anything about his character, he knows well where it is drawn and would never cross it.

I'm not saying it's not real. We're not "denying" anything. We're just choosing, for ourselves, to claim that the book isn't canon because it doesn't suit the original plot or the characters in the main storyline. It was sloppily written, the plot sucked, and they killed Thistleclaw OFF CAMERA, which was a bad move on the part of the authors. Even the maker of the video said they didn't like the Novella in the description. This video was just their way of supplementing poor writing with good theorizing. You can believe what you will about the novella, but it sucked and too many characters were poorly illustrated for it to be considered canon. That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it.
He wasn't supposed to be like this, Erin Hunter is mutiple authors and when they relased BS almost a decade ago they made him a loving but overly aggressive charecter.
Spottedleaf's Heart was just an afterthought made by Vicky Holmes a year ago. He was never intended to be like this and they needed to make up a reason as to why he was in the DF
spottedleafs heart sucked in that it was gross pedophilia apologia, character assassination, and boring as fuck and op is right. Like. "it's real and people should stop denying it" should mean we should never stop holding working partners, harper collins and vicky responsible for the truly offensive book they put out, but that doesnt mean i am obligated to acknowledge it in my fanfics and my art and my creations where maybe i DONT want to have to deal with a poorly written csa plot every time i want to draw some cats.

This is such a cool concept, and it makes sense. I used to think Thistleclaw died on a border patrol for being the idiot son of the ambitious cat, Adderfang, but I saw Spottedleaf's Heart and started to think about other possibilities.

Honestly, I consider this canon now. I always found it difficult to believe that Thistleclaw's death was accidental, especially when the claim is that it happened in a border skirmish. It just doesn't seem to add up. Besides, Redtail, although very sadly underrated and underdeveloped by the authors, doesn't seem to me like the kind of character to take Thistleclaw's actions laying down. Also, as always, what a beautiful art style ^^

I also LOVE how Whitestorm is involved in this. He's doing this not only for his friend, who his father did wrong, but for his mother. Thistleclaw showed little to no care after Snowfur died, and then betrayed his mate by going after his friend. Thistleclaw has been a poor father, and we can clearly see that in the fact that Whitestorm DID NOT HESITATE before working with Redtail to kill him.
absolutely; he has a very complex role in this, of someone who feels love for his father, but at the same time hates him and feels DEEPLY BETRAYED that thistleclaw has betrayed his love by hurting his friend. he is willing to stand with redtail and do what must be done, no matter how it burns

I love this!! I was so mad after hearing about spottedleaf’s heart (never got the chance to read it, but I read a summary to see if it was that bad. It was even worse than I had expected.) But... oh my god I love this! I love the idea of Redtail defending her, and taking that creepy cat down so much!
