It's really a shame this game wasn't ported to any console. The Sega Saturn would have done this game incredible justice! It's a bit of an oddball in the R-Type series, but still a very good shooter.

85futureshock This was cool, but the original R-Type port on the Master System was a classic. It was my favourite Master System game of all time. Also, considering it only had 8 shortish levels it REALLY packed in a massive amount of challenge. I played for weeks and weeks and only made it to level 7 which was crazy difficult. I was only 10 at the time though, so I guess it was balanced pretty damn well. All of the R-Type games are classics though. It had something that set it apart from any other side scrolling shooter. The droid thing you could shoot off and attach to your front or rear gave the game an extra layer that was never beaten by any other similar franchise. It beat the crap out of the Gradius games, although Nintendo fanboys will tell you otherwise. I guess I just love it so much now because of the nostalgia factor.
85futureshock i'd go as far as saying this is not a true r-type game. R-type's defining feature is the detachable force pod. Without that it's just a.n.other generic shooter.
@@crunchsixfoe it's a different mechanic - to me that makes it a different game. the whole feel of it is just very different to the earlier r-type games. It's like comparing class SW trilogy to the prequels or disney movies..

小学生の終わり頃からゲーセンに通い詰めて、生涯最後に全面クリア出来たアーケードシューティングがこの作品でした。
その後の作品は全くのダメダメ。さすがに歳には勝てなかった感じでした。

これ、今改めて見てみると「なんでR-TYPEシリーズで出しちゃったんだろう？」って思ってしまう作品ですね。世界観も全然違う感じにしちゃってるし、何よりシリーズの要、フォースが廃止されてしまってる。アイデアは枯れてないんだけど、ネームバリューに頼っちゃったんだろうなぁ…(´･ω･)
元々はR-TYPEとは違うゲームとして出す予定だったのが
「集客率高めるにはやっぱR-TYPEの名が付いてなきゃダメでしょ」て事で変更された模様。
これ、置いているところを見たことないよ。
あらためて見てみると音楽がR-typeの世界観を見事に外れているな。

I remember a game like this on Turbo Grafx game system. And the system still cost more than xbox and ps3 which is $899 on Amazon.com.
