    Okay Matt that intro sure had me laughing. Darn near spilled my coffee. I can see for me where it would be real easy to end up crowding the eye before getting enough deer hair on. I have to really watch because it seems my tendency is to not leave enough space by the eye when I’m tying. Great job on that hopper Matt.

    Nice tie. I have a love/hate relationship with this fly. Near the base of the dam that creates the lake our Maine camp is on, there are a couple of really good spots for casting to landlocked salmon. After not fishing there for several years, I hiked in & was surprised to find a newly renovated cleared area covered in tall grass & full of grass hoppers with some being blown into the water. I had no hopper flies & couldn’t get a fish to look at my flies. I went home & spent the rest of the day & eve tying these hoppers. I returned the next day to find the “field” bulldozed & no hoppers in sight. 😢

      I think so too Mike. I actually thought I was having good luck with a green foam hopper one day (a couple of fish in an hour or so), then lost it in a tree and tried this one... and then started catching a lot more than I was with the foam one. That's a great description of these deer hair heads! We might need to come up with a series of flies named after Muppets. I could definitely do a green Oscar the Grouch. And a yellow Big Bird. Oh wait, that's Sesame Street. Are they Muppets? Now that I think about it, they may not be. Like Marvel and DC. Two separate universes. Elmo and Mrs. Piggy probably don't know each other. It's still on my to-do list Joe, but I don't have all the materials yet. Otherwise I'll have to substitute something for the yellow seal, and silver badger. It is a cool pattern, but I don't want to have to make too many substitutions.

    My favorite hopper pattern. I was just fishing it last night and couldn’t keep the panfish off of it. You’re too hard on yourself. I thought your tie turned out fine. I find drowned hoppers are sometimes more effective and your looser head would help to keep the fly lower in the film. I never tried an upright turkey wing with this pattern. I always tie them flat and they usually get split from me supporting the fly when I pack the deer hair. I might have to give it a try.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад

      Ahhh, thanks man! But I didn't really do that upright wing on purpose. :-) But I know what you're saying, a lot of times my turkey feathers end up splitting too. But... on the Joe's Hopper, they are often tied in as two separate pieces anyway so it probably doesn't matter too much. Thanks for the note!
