DMM's line of belay carabiners designed on the Rhino platform (the horn on top of the spine prevents cross-loading of Grigri and similar belay devices). The new Ceros carabiners have another cross-load prevention feature in the form of a wire gate belay keeper. It will be available as a screw gate, a Kwiklock auto, and a Locksafe triple action auto. The screw lock will sell for $20.95 USD and weigh in at 87 grams. To see the specs and compare the Ceros to other belay carabiners check out weighmyrack at weighmyrack.co...
I use this with my grigri and it's fantastic. Personally I prefer a smaller krab for an ATC or guide style tube tho - this one would be a bit overkill in that situation.
This is really designed to be used with a GriGri, not a normal belay device, and i can honestly say it works amazingly with it!
Whilst solid construction wise, my issues with this biner:
- there's a narrowing in the biner where the middle clip is. The belay loop is meant to fit through here but the loop on my harness (Petzl Sama) has a tendency to snag here and isn't so easy to extract post belay. Not really wanting to risk extra wear on my harness
- I really wish they'd incorporate the 'red' visual indicators when the screwgate is open that you see on other biners (though that may be a manufacturer's patent thing).
- my screwgate is 'sticky' when it comes to unscrewing. Hopefully it'll become slightly looser with more use.
The CEROS screw carabiner is not fully locked. When the screw is turned all the way in, it is not fully locked and only remains halfway on the nose.
great idea but Ocun has HMS called Condor for about the year with the same ides.
The rhyno is the worst biner I`ve ever put my hands on, in 15 years of climbing. They just managed to make it worse. Why the horn if the wire does the job perfectly?
The wire keeps the base of the caribiner oriented on the rope / lanyard / belay loop. The horn is to keep the device on the other end oriented properly, and from sliding along the spine.
the name Ceros is the horn in Hellenic language, DMM should educate better their people selling their staff.
this krab is an awkward pain in the arse
Bought two Ceros. Most useless piece of gear I own.
why?
