Writing can be daunting when you compare yourself to someone like Austen. All you can do is do your best. Terry Pratchett once said, "The first draft is just you telling yourself the story." Anyway, can't wait to hear more about it and see it in print!
I think that your appreciation of classic literature, coupled with the obvious research and writing that you do to present your videos, shows your latent capacity to be an excellent novelist. Go for it! If you're unsure about certain aspects of your trilogy, perhaps you can find some beta readers amongst your subscribers.
From what you mentioned, Pride and Prejudice in space sounds cool, especially because there's a worldbuilding that makes the story to feel new but it still respects Austen's ideas. Also, I think you would be a great novelist, because you are such a witty person and your ideas are always great :)
I agree it is not good to set the bar too high. I do art and now that I no longer want to paint like Turner or Sargent I am happier to create art that I like and that is good to look at.
I am also deep in the trenches writing a novel and went through many of the same exact stages. "Permission to write a book that's just fun and not perfect." I have fully embraced the trashy, goofy, but hopefully enjoyable and delightful nature of my project which will never live up to Jane Austen but will make someone happy to read. I believe in you!! We can do this!!
I can't remember the exact quote but it's something like .... someone out there else is doing the thing you want to do, doing it poorly and getting paid with ZERO intention of ever doing it any better
I also remember hearing something similar about how disgusting ppl are making podcasts with so many followers and getting paid good money, anyone can have a portion of that too! I will certainly remember this

I would absolutely love it if you would review all the different adaptations and spinoff books of P&P. When you publish a book, I will definitely buy it.
With your knowledge of the regency era and literature, I'm sure you'll do well. The most important thing is to follow your dreams and write a story that you'd love to read. I wish you the best of luck! ❤
While having high standards is a good thing in many regards, trying to hold yourself to the standard of Jane Austen is unrealistic, so it's good that you got over that. Hi kitties! It's nice to see you make a return to your channel. Hi Hailey as well. Glad to see you're doing well. I'd been wondering if the limited number of videos recently was because you were busy or if you'd had a flare up. Keep being awesome as well, Ellie.
‘Multi-dream child’? Girl? I feel you! Also, do you see all of the P&P variations that are published? So many books are out there now for people of all genres. I mean, we have a whole new official one with romantasy! I have been struggling with a sci-fi novel with inspiration of Star Trek, even P&P (I blame you when I found your channel)… I am a Trekkie so… Why not? (Yes, I also preordered P&P In space when you talked of it in a short). Let’s go and write!
Yay for multi-dream kids! ✨ And I hope you love P&P in Space so much! I am so excited to see the real final edition when it comes out. The color illustrations will be so cool! And yes, let's write! 🔥

Love your insights into writing! And the quality of writing- you don't have to give up QUALITY! Remember, there was plenty of trashy writing happening in the 1800's! Anthony Trollope, to me, is the best Victorian era writer- character development like no other, and great insights into the cultural mentality about EVERYTHING at the time. His series of novels in The Barchester Chronicles- starting with The Warden( setting the groundwork for the series) Barchester Towers ( my favorite installment) and continuing onto the final Last Chronicle of Barsetshire- absolutely brilliant! It begins and ends with the Church figuring prominently, but involves so much more about class, and money, the power of the media(!), hypocrisy, political shenanigans, gender inequities, sex(mostly implied) and poverty (of spirit as well as material goods). He was a prolific writer and astute observer of people and motives- as was Austen- and his standalone novels, like The Way We Live Now, is incredibly relevant to our world today! Yes, it may take a minute to get into his style- vocabulary was a thing back then!- and his writings are much more character driven than plot driven- so you are not sitting on the edge of your seat!- but OH SO WORTH THE TIME!! Best of luck as you pursue your writing dreams! ❤❤❤
Ellie you're clearly well read, a great researcher and very creative - you have writer blood running through your veins! So glad you have the confidence to do this 🎉
I can't wait to read your books, Ellie. And remember they don't have to be perfect. I have a feeling that, since they're a labor of love, they'll be a great read. Cheering you on.

This is so helpful. The way you describe realizing that you're capable of writing a genre novel resonates with me when I started reading romance novels!
Your videos are so well-researched and written that we already know you're a good writer! In fact, you could collate your videos on the Regency period into a non-fiction historical research guide. So, to paraphrase you to you: keep writing because you're AWESOME. 🙂 One of the things that I appreciate from Liz Gilbert is that she said something like, "Yes, someone else has done the thing you want to do. But that thing has not been done by YOU." Jane Austen was ground-breaking in formulating genre tropes (enemies to lovers, second chance romance) along with the "show, don't tell" of a novel AND we've also come a long way since then! A couple YT writer channel recs: You may find Abbie Emmons helpful in terms of writing, especially if you go the self-publishing route. She also has some great videos of background music to do writing sprints. Literary Lens has a series called "Quelling Your Query Conundrums" that's really good for learning how to write a compelling query to agents.
1. Don't forget it is of critical importance for the Victorian novelist to refrain from mistakenly putting the manuscript into the stroller and the child over which she is watching into the handbag instead. 2. Remember, if you want to be a professional writer, one of the most important things to do is to develop the discipline to sit down and write - even when feeling uninspired or not in the mood. Force yourself to get up at, say 6 am and write for an hour or two. So many aspiring writers remain hobbyists and end up un-published because they treat writing as a hobby or "art" rather than work. 3. As for alt-history Victoriana, so much of it today is Steampunk or otherwise some retro-futuristic take on the 19th Century. What would be interesting, even for stories about culture rather than geopolitics, would be an alternate timeline in which France either won the Napoleonic Wars or they settled into a stalemate. Consider a James Bond story set a century early in a world where an Atlantic coalition led by the UK played spy games in a cold war with with a Continental French bloc bent on spreading their international revolutionary movement. Or, if the late Victorian is one's thing, what if, after the First Opium War, China had made an about-face rapid industrialization the way Japan did in the Meiji era (as the European powers indeed feared), and winning a major victory against the British Empire in the Second Opium War (similar to, but more profound than, Japan's victory over Russia in the Russo-Japanese War) thereby a creating serious cultural rival to the Anglosphere in places like Japan, Russia, India, and perhaps even Australia or New Zealand. I think there could be some interesting comedy (or just drama) of manners stories exploring these cultural differences to be written. 4. Is it more pathetic or insulting that the RUclips ads that popped up in conjunction with your video were for Grammarly?

The Nobility video was my entry point into your channel. So cool to know what it grew out of. I am also struggling with writers block but its on my first dissertation publication in nuclear engineering so a bit different but relatable none the less.
Writing it so it adapts easily to the big screen might be a good idea. It seems like there's a thirst for more stories about that era that come from a different perspective. I really enjoy your insights and knowledge of Victorian history, keep that and you should do well...
Looking forward to your book, keep us updated. ❤. I can only dream of finishing one of my many stories I started... most of the influences came from my actual dreams!!

Sounds interesting! Finish! So we can read it! Also, that’s my process exactly. I figured ‘there’s a lot of crap out there; I can write crap!’ But revising my younger self’s writing is tricky for all the same reasons.
It’s so funny you posted this today-I was watching one of your videos last weekend and almost wrote a comment that you should try your hand at writing a P&P continuation, having no idea you actually were already working on a book. (I don’t think I did post it because I think it was an older video and I assumed you wouldn’t see it.) P.S. I love your bird vase.
@@EllieDashwood We just opened to supernatural/paranormal/fantasy elements in historical fiction a couple of months ago! We don't take YA, but I've guided an author through changing that before. (It has to have romance, and the two people in the romance have to be at least 18. We also only accept third person POV.) But I have so much fun reading historical fiction all the time for work! And thank you because your videos have helped educate me on all the little details about life in Regency and Victorian times and I can point authors to them when they want to know more.
Congratulation on your project! It looks like a fun one. I am really impressed by your historical expertise on Georgian England. But don't overlook an important aspect of Austen literary work. The work is reflection on a contemporary society as opposed to a description of the past. Jane Austen, in spite of her conformism, was in phase with her time (at least when looked back, this might be just an oversimplification). I would recommend applying the skill to more recent times, if the apparent modernity of Austen is to be captured. I happen to have discover back-to-back Jane Austen P&P and Tom Sharpe's Wilt (I). Tom Sharpe looks like a Literary Genius when seen in the shadow of Austen. More than he might actually be. Austen give the female view before the marriage and Sharp the (sexist) male view after the marriage. Nevertheless, Wilt is probably a modern Austinian novel of a special type. To go to the point, you can have fun with making fantasies such as "Romancing Mata Hari" or "The courtship of Inayat Khan".
I think you’re thinking about it the wrong way. Filling your head with great authors like Jane Austen will only improve your own writing, Quality in = Quality out. Just write the story you want to read without comparisons to anyone and without thinking about how it will sell. Then you’ll for sure have a lot of fun and probably surprise yourself with the results!
I have been disappointed in almost every Jane Austen rewrite or add to that I’ve read, with the exception of ‘Death Comes to Pemberley’. There is no way I would have bought ‘Pride and Prejudice in Space’, absolutely no way. Just the title would have been enough to put me off, despite one of my favourite authors being Isaac Asimov. I’m not averse to sci fi. Your enthusiasm for ‘in Space’ has made me want to read it so I can feel an Amazon order is imminent. My favourite author is Jane Austen and your love of her talent and work is evident so I’ll trust your judgement and recommendation regarding this book. Many thanks for the wide range of videos you’ve provided. I’m a fan.
From Robert Heinlein's rules for writing: Rule Three: You Must Refrain From Rewriting, Except to Editorial Order This is the one that got Heinlein in trouble with creative-writing teachers. There's an old saying that stories are never finished, only abandoned - learn to abandon yours. If you find your current revisions amount to restoring the work to the way it was at an earlier stage, then it's time to push the baby out of the nest. And although many beginners don't believe it, Heinlein is right: if your story is close to publishable, editors will tell you what you have to do to make it salable.
I can relate so much! I've written a duology and I have that younger me issues as well... 😐 I want to publish it somehow, but I'm not sure if it's worthy to be published...
I've attempted many book ideas for years... I'm really not good at describing places, or coming up with thing for the character's to do. But recently I discovered the format of writing a Jane Austen fan fiction, so I'm trying a short novel, about 20 odd chapters based on Elizabeth Elliot. You're an experienced person of litteritrue, I'd really appreciate anything you have to say. What videos would you recommend from your channel for my study of regency, Elite Elliot Somersetshire, London, and Bath? Thank you so much for reading this.❤❤❤
Also to add: JA wasn’t that great of an author, she’s just popular because she was one of the first “romance” authors so you shouldn’t feel intimidated by any of those authors. Now Georgette Heyer on the other hand…..Lord have mercy her books intimidate my writing lololol.
You deserve better of doing writing a novel on Victorian era by taking a break from Regency era. I'm hoping to write a novel again after losing all of it.
True there's only one Jane Austen but there's also only one Ellie Dashwood, am I right? Go for it, girl. I wish you all the success you deserve,

"Pecagsh" it took me a moment to understand. 🤣
You will do wonderfully. You only need to have your own voice
Keep after your dream of being an author. As I child I wanted to be an author, artist and own things. Will die doing none of them. So sad.
