After Effects : Quick Music Visualizer Tutorial

- A tutorial on creating a music visualizer in After Effects 2019. This is also known as an Audio Visualizer or audio spectrum. This will make music react with waveforms around a circle.

2:00 add logo 2 Main comp
2:15 add "Song" comp - Add audio - Rightclicik audo - Keyframe assitant - Convert audio to keyframes. Delete Left & Right, keep Both channels keyframes
2:38 Precompose logo in Main comp
2:57 Effects > Distort - Magnify (Magnification:100, Size: 1000, Blending mode: None)
_! Make sure your comp names are Case-correct, if you get expression error, read it and try to understand what's said._
I got expression error. Trying to figure out why. What do you mean by 'Comp names case-correct"?

Ok, now here's my question...
How do I make the audio spectrum more sensitve? Or do I just make the music louder?
I watch this video like at least 3 times a year because i forget the expression, so thanks hell yeah
I am having a problem and I hope you can assist. The audio that I am trying to do is couple of minutes, is there a way to extend this? Additionally, the spectrum is not very sensitive and it is bearly showing movement but audio is high and lastly the sound is getting slow or chewy after couple of seconds. I hope you can just explain each setting on your video is for what so we can be able to adjust to our requirement.
At the beginning when making the "main" composition, set the duration to however long your video/audio is.
You can click the project render window to select all go to composition then composition settings and then change the end time to the length of the song add a little bit extra and cut in later in premiere pro

I played with it and expanded the composition to 1 hour and the background and the visualizer to 1 hour as well. The only thing that seems to have stopped working is the magnify distort effect and I can't figure how where to put that back or modify it.
I'm confused about what the pre-comp does. Could we not just add the song (with convert keyframes) into the main composition and whip/reference the magnification to the audio keyframe slider?
EDIT: ah wait, the magnify effect comes afterwards.. nvmd

To save EVERYONE time, when you create your new composition, make sure that the clip length isnt set to 30 seconds. There is no way to change it after.
ofc there is. Just go to Composition - Composition Settings & change the Length

I actually had an additional question, how easy is it and what is the process of swapping out the mp3 and processing another one and another one, etc etc? I am trying to improve the workflow to do many of these. What steps are absolutely required to accomplish this?

I can't set the magnification to 100. The letters turn red and its always writes 103,5. What should I do?
It works but I'm not sure why it slowes down hella at some parts and the pitch of the voice audio changes to very low.... I followed all the instructions correctly.... not sure what the issue is

Hi, is there any scrip to do some steps on a key press? I used this method and tuned it for my like but i wanted to process more files, but cant find any solution to batch them anywhere.
New composition
Name it main - ok
Add song and background to project
Right click in composition
go new solid.
Name it audio spectrum
Make sure it is black
Go to effects and choose audio spectrum
Drag in on the audio spectrum layer
Under audio spectrum on left change the layer to the song.
Set Start point to 0
Set End point to 960
End Freq 125
Freq Band 500
Max H 1250
Audio Duration 180
Audio offset -20
Thickness 7
Side option B
Go to effects and search for Polar Coords
Drag to spectrum layer
On left set type to Rect to polar and interpolation to 100
Go to effects search for mirror and drag on spectrum layer
Set reflection centre to 960
Top menu select effect, generate, 4-color gradient
Choose your colors
Drag logo in the middle of spectrum.
Next top menu, composition, new composition
Name it song, click ok.
Drag the same music and drop it on new composition
Right click the song, go to keyframe assistant, then convert audio to keyframes
Under audio amplitude, click effects and delete the left and right channels
Go back to main, make sure your background image is last in the list.
Holding Shift, select the top 3 items
Right click, select precompose
Make sure move all attributes is selected
Go to effects and search for magnify
Drag it on precomposition
In the setting above change magnification to 100
Then size to 1100
Set blend mode to none
Hold ALT key click the stop watch beside Magnification
In the bottom paste the following exression
value + (comp("Song").layer("Audio Amplitude").effect("Both Channels")("Slider")) / 4

Having this same issue, if anyone knows a fix, I'd like to hear it too.
Go to your Song comp and do the convert audio to keyframes again so re-make the "beat map" for the Magnify.
bro go to etid tab then conposition edit then change end time to 4 min
I have done everything exactly how you did it twice now. The logo and audio visualizer are pulsing to the music but no sound is playing at all. Any ideas?

if anyone else is having this issue, make sure the song is in the main comp as well. So you will have the song in 2 different comps - the main one, and it's own one with keyframes

That's just AE previewing it.
It won't be like that when you export.
Is it possible to specify the expression to react to certain frequencies of the song?

I love this tutorial but I have an issue. I am doing this for an hour long mix set and the problem I am having is the logo and the visualizer disappear after about 30 seconds.
mine is not working, it says "this project contains expression errors error 1 of 1"... can anyone help...
Usually, this means you have the wrong name in your expression. If you copied the expression exactly, but didn't name your elements exactly as they are in the expression, it will have an error. For example, make sure the 2nd composition with the song in it is called "Song", or else the expression is looking for something that isn't there.

when i followed this, my song is only 30 seconds long. When i open the song file in a mediaplayer, it says its 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

Is there any way to increase the sensitivity of the spectrum? Sort of like a threshold value I guess. So lower volume sounds still display some change? Awesome tutorial btw.
Tweak around with your max height, start frequency, and end frequency
why does slider isn't accepted in the expression?
The effect stops after 30 seconds for me and I don't understand why.

@@tralfmusic thanks mate! I did the same and it didn't work, so I tried messing with the values of the audio visualizer effect until I saw something move. Turns out I had to increase the maximum height by a LOT. 😅
Also there's another effect in AE2020 called Audio Waveform and I prefer that one!

Anybody know how to fix the fact that my song is now randomly pitch shifting every few seconds? Everything else is working fine except for that.

I have been looking for something like this for a very long time but for my DJ mix sets that are 1 hour or longer. I realize that a lot of the very intricate visualizers aren't designed for sets that long as it makes the export time extremely long and the file size very large in some cases. I have been able to successfully export this visualizer in about 4-5 hours for a 1 hour long mix set at 720p with a file size of around 4.5 GB which isn't terrible. If there is any way to make it smaller, export faster and still look good, anyone please let me know.

Followed all steps there, thank you, but tell me, is my laptop to slow or did i do something wrong, because when i start to listen to it, per spacebar, it only looks like 20 frames per seconds or so..

Whenever i do this my song gets really slow any help? the farther you go the slower it gets is it supposed to be like this
perhaps that's just After Effects running slowly. Unless I'm mistaken it shouldn't render at that speed
It only works for 30 seconds, (the movement of the logo) then stays still, anyone have a fix to this for more than that?

Yeah, you will just have to do the last step (pre-compose / magnify) again and relink your audio.
