Hahaha they not just started with the red concept but velvet one too...Be natural was the other MV for this debut. They used the duality very often with two videos each come back in their first years. Happiness/Be Natural and Ice Cream Cake/Automatic...they used this formula Red/Velvet, after their debut years (2014 and 2015) they start to switch between their concepts.

Happy (almost) 10th anniversary, and here's to at least 10 more
Red Velvet debuted on August 1st, 2014, with 4 members. Yeri 💜 joined 8 months later with the Ice Cream Cake Ep after she turned 16. She was in this video at the beginning under the lips.
Irene 🩷 had pink hair and was 23 at this time
Seulgi 💛 had yellow hair, and Wendy 💙 had blue hair. They were 20
Joy 💚 had green hair and was 17, a month shy of her 18th birthday.
Don’t worry too much about not recognizing them. They’ve matured a lot over 10 years haha. Also don’t forget Wendy did have a severe accident that caused bad injuries to her face and she’s had a bit of reconstructive surgery since.
Also yes Yeri joined in March of 2015 because SM debuted RV a year early because of problems within the company including members leaving Exo and Jessica leaving SNSD.
Fun fact….. the official color of Red Velvet is pastel coral. They could not use red because that color was associated to EXO even though that is not their color designation.
Red Velvet was very talented from the beginning… even before their debut. They were also known from the get go to have the duality of red and velvet and anything in between. As you see how red Happiness was, the second single Be Natural shows their extreme contrast from the start. Unlike other groups where they wander looking for a particular genre to stick.
I think RV couldn't use red as a fan color, because that's the color for TVXQ who are still active under SM.

There was a thing in Kpop, mostly in 2nd gen, where they would deliberately style a group to look similar. It ended fairly quickly in the 3rd gen, but the styling in this MV still has that vibe. The makeup style, particularly in the eyes, makes all the members look very similar, which is crazy because all five of them look quite different naturally. The color dip for their hair and the numbers on their clothes was a key for telling them apart. Both the colors and the numbers are a key part of Red Velvet fandom. Whenever I see green now, I think of Joy. Whenever I see 43, I think of Irene.

Okay, so 'process of elimination'.
Like you mentioned, Seulgi is obviously Seulgi and will always obviously be Seulgi (and I completely agree with the statement; for me, visually, she is easily the most highly recognizable member out of all five). She had the Yellow hair here.
Even though Wendy is my Ult Bias in all of K-Pop (and likely in all of Music in general), there are STILL times where/ when I cannot recognize her physically by sight alone (so please, do not feel bad about that because you are definitely not alone in having that problem). Wendy is obvious by her voice when she belts but the camera still needs to be pointed directly at her at other times when she is trying to blend in with the other ladies, or I sometimes still lose track of her. You figured out on your own that she was the member with the Blue hair.
Joy will ALWAYS be the tallest member of the group (she's a whole 5ft 6in), she had the Supermodel build and here, she had the Green hair. Her weight has fluctuated a lot over the years and has been a constant struggle for her. Even now, she is catching hell for it. I personally do not get mad about that stuff but the Korean trolls are THE MOST MEAN, MOST EVIL TROLLS ON EARTH when it comes to looks. They are so up-tight about the Korean Beauty Standard that I expect many of the older trolls to die off in droves any day now from stressing themselves out so much over the last 20+ years. The KBS has them so conditioned, mind-controlled, whipped, enslaved that they can't break free from the idea it presents as 'FACT' when it is literally just an idea. But trolls are too stupid to have their own imaginations, all they can do is regurgitate ideas that other people came up with.
Irene will always be one of the shorter members (I think only Wendy is shorter than Irene) and here, she had the Pink hair. Remember that Irene is also the Main Rapper of the group and for even more context, her face is very symmetrical except that her Left ear sticks out a little bit more than her Right ear. She's ADORABLE and is considered to be a Visual among Visuals in K-Pop. She can have a very dour look if she is not smiling, but when she smiles she LIGHTS UP THE ROOM just as much as any other member.
IF Yeri had been allowed to debut at the same time as the rest of the group, she would have had Purple hair.
