Install an expansion chamber and some Cerianis on that 2-stroke golf cart, FloridaRossi! Woohoo!!! I have a friend with severe, debilitating back problems, and whenever we talk, it always includes the kinds of bikes that Ken Sr. and Ken Jr. house in their museum and restore and sell. My buddy's first choice in an MX if he could ride is a Bultaco Pursang. It'd be difficult for me to choose just one, especially after being reminded of all the great 2-stroke bikes from yesteryear by the Kaplans. But, it'd be a toss up between the inaugural year Honda Elsinore 250 with the silver and green tank, a Penton 125 Six Days, a Rickman Metisse 100 (Hodaka engine) or 125 (Sachs engine), an Ossa Stiletto 250, an AJS 250 Stormer, or a CZ 250. 🙂
I never get tired of looking at Maico’s I had a poster of the 490 Sand Spider in my room right next to a poster of The Bomber Hole-Shotting the 1981 USGP at Mid Ohio👍🏼
Brings back memories! when I was 14 a friend of my brothers gave me a maico 501 and sand spider 250 that didn't run. After I got them running, I went to start the 501 and forgot to pull the compression release and it picked me up and deposited me over the handlebars. Didn't make that mistake again... Cheers guys
One of our (AUSSIE) down under champions of moto X Gregg Ballard rode them for 490,s too many a championship he then went on to ride Honda's and create the Jeff Ballard 630 kit fof the dr 600,s in the 90,s and also the xr280 kit for the 250,s.. and if my memory is correct he went on to use them to win the Finke desert race which is held each year in Australia from the outback town of Finke to Alice Springs and back.. Toby Price is one of it a couple of times to name a champion Wonderful work you guys do..cheers Davo
Such a beautiful load of Maicos. They’re definitely at the right place to continue life. That RMX to RM conversion is going to be great. If I remember correctly there wasn’t a lot of difference between the two. Suspension was set up for wood as was the gearing. Then just a headlight and such. Back in the day guys loved running the RM in enduros. Thank you for sharing these awesome vintage machines with us Ken and team!!
I was 17 graduate high school in 76 got a job at a honda, triumph, bmw, moto guzzi dealer before graduating worked there about 18 years, loved it. Seeing this now I'm missing it.

Solid gold. I find it absolutely amazing how you’re able to have all those projects going on at the same time. Great team. Those mechanics are simply amazing; the way they can work on such a variety of bikes. 👍 🏁 🏍️
Those are absolutely stunning! Back in the early '80's I had a YZ 490 and one of my riding friends had a Maico 490. Not that my Yamaha was a slouch, because it certainly wasn't. But his Maico used to smoke me on every ride! Usually by a lot. I'm sure those German bikes made way more horsepower than they were rated as. 👍

I raced the GNCC on a mini when KTM had an anniversary “KTM day” I think it was), got a John penton medal 🏅 for finishing and have a pic of David Knight (factory KTM World champ) giving it to me. I also got to meet John that day, & he signed my John Penton book! I also got David knights pants & jersey from that same race, & at the next GNCC in Sparta Kentucky, managed to see him & get them both signed. (He was walking the track right by where we parked, we had jersey and pants with us hoping to see him. They were so so muddy from the John penton race I had to clean them before he could ever try to sign them. He signed the stuff while I used my back for a place for him to sign (have pics of that too!). Anyway, it really brought back a ton of memories from that day when you showed that bike. It went down as one of my childhood best memories for sure, the whole race weekend & the series of events that happened. If I’m not mistaken that was 2007 & my first year riding a KTM 85.
