Great exercises! If I could just add... start slow. To prevent injuries, lunging, trail rides, walk and trot exercises first would be the safest route. Pros conditioning out of shape horses often do several weeks of work at the walk and trot to strengthen muscles, ligaments, and tendons before introducing cantering, then adding jumps. Adding intense exercise too early with an unfit horse could cause tears etc, even if just in short bursts. And never underestimate the value of a good old fashioned long walk on lead rope. It increases bonding and fitness for both horse and rider, and is a great way to expose them to new things from the ground.
Yes! This! I started a 22 year old Oldenburg gelding I inherited three years ago. He never had a job in his life and was confined to a 12x12 stall with an attached paddock not much bigger than the stall. 😢 His people meant well and loved him but unfortunately that confinement and isolation took a toll on him. I spent the first year with him exclusively getting him used to 24.7 turnout on grass pastures, transitioning his entire diet, and bonding. Nothing but very short walks and hand grazing. Year two we began longer walks in hand, ground driving, short longe sessions, hill work, ground poles, obstacles, and other rehabilitation exercises. Six months in I would sit on him and get off of him and then walk him several steps and so on and so forth. Almost to the end of year three and he has transformed. I am able to ride him (at a walk with the occasional few steps of trot) for 35-40 minutes at a time. He is incredible and I feel so blessed to have him. He’s taught me so much and I just wanted to share this to emphasize the importance of your comment. It’s take us three years to simply be able to have him comfortably carry himself and me and do so for up to 40 minutes! It is not an overnight process. We have such a strong bond and we have been in multiple situations where he could have easily left me in the dust but was willing to stay because of the time we’ve spent getting to know o e another and bonding. Also I’m a certified equine sports massage therapist and electro- acupressure therapist. So regular bodywork sessions have also been a MASSIVE part of our journey. Anyway… sorry to blab. God bless and keep you yours. Thank you again for your comment! ❤
So I have been riding for 8 years but this still helped because I’m bringing my horse back to work from being lame and he’s out of shape. Also your channel is amazing and keep up the work ❤️💕
I’m about to start my first half lease of a horse named Olaf! I’m so excited to start having fun with him outside of weekly lessons. Also I love your videos very educational so thank you!
I love this video and I think I'll find it really helpful My trainer found a horse she really wants me to get and I most likely am but his owner he has now that are trying to get him to a better home are scared to jump or even canter so for 2 whole years he hasn't jumped or cantered until recently to see how he would do after so long since when he was younger he was an amazing hunter (around the ages of 6-10 and now he is 16) but with that gap that he hasn't done much exercise he is really out of shape and kinda rushes to jumps but luckily I have sorta felt with that before and I have an amazing trainer who is willing to help me and make this a good learning experience
Hi! Nice exercises. I work similar with my horses. I add some extra exersises - long walks on leading rope or pulling a cart, skijoring on snow. And of course playing on the meadow with jolly ball and trick training. My young stallion loves it :D Some fun is nice for horses. :) Thanks for your videos! :)
I lunge and trail ride on hilly terrain at all three gaits. I have been riding horses for several decades. I enjoy your videos, they are helping me explain riding techniques to an 11 year old girl that is new to horses. She will be taking my 18 year old appaloosa when she is more confident.
I like to long line drive ( driving)my horse around the pasture. It moves them forward to be brave..I get to walk..which I like..and lately I have been having her ( 3 year old chestnut Morgan) drag cut branches to burn piles. Super training..as she will soon be cart trained.
Great video your a natural! I’m tryin to get my horse back in shape after this winter she’s an Arabian and has a lot of energy but she has off and on laminitis so I’m hoping to make a areana this year so it will be softer on her feet! Also I’m trying to teach her to lower her head when riding but I’m confused if you could help me out that would mean so much! Have a good day!♥️
I love doing shoulder/haunches-in for muscle building. It really helps my horse engage his core and use the inside hind. Great video! I’ll have to try these exercises!
I need this for my friends horse!! Thank you (My friend is injured I’ve been taking care of her horse. Unfortunately her horse is a little too advanced for me to ride)
I'm 4'11 and found 15.2 hh horses work the best for me personally but I've found shorter people can ride horses as short as 13 hands safely and also ride a 17.3 hand horse no problem
I'm 5' as well and have ridden anything from a 13h pony to 18h horses. I would say the "sweet spot" is probably between 14-16 hands. It mostly depends on your build, the horse's build (narrow? wide?), and your personal preference. My 13.3h mustang is stocky and fills my leg out more than a number of the 16h thoroughbreds I ride for work.
It doesn’t matter about height as much as your weight does. You could be 5’ but 300lbs, so you’d need a bigger horse. I am 5’2”and 95lbs, and I ride horses around 14 hands and taller
Your weight + tack should amount to no more than 15% of horses body weight. Best height for balance is a horse who's withers are level with your face :)
i have been doing all of these exercises frequently with lighter exercises in between for about two years, but my horse still don’t have any muscles along his top line. he gets good quality food that a professional recommended me giving him and he’s happy and healthy overall. idk what i’m doing wrong
It may be what breed he is and if you don’t already, maybe find some supplements for him but if you have questions about that I would ask a vet, trainer, or someone you know that’s well with horses
I ride western and I'm going to be lunging my horse as soon as I get a lunging rope, But I don't have any hills in my area since I live in Florida, but I need to build up his muscles in his hind end. Any other exercises? I do a lot of stopping, and backing up exercises but yeah, I was just wondering what other things I could do with my horse to build up hind end muscles that are for western horses.
Hi! My family and I want to get a horse but I don't know which horse would be easy to take care of and a horse that is calm. I am taking riding lessons. I wanted to ask for your opinion since you have been with horses a lot.
There’s really no specific breed that I would recommend since any horse can be well trained. I think going to try out horses and taking your riding instructor along will help you find the right horse. The instructor will be able to tell you whether the horse would be a good fit for you. Best of luck!
Hey.. im a begginer and im love with horses and basically all animals❤️ thank you so much for the videos!!🙏🏻 i have to ask, every time im riding its feels like im doin something against the horse will. Do they suffer while people ride them? Because i really want to become a great rider🙏🏻 thank you❤️
Horses are animals made for work. They need a job and riding gives then a job. But if the horse does not have its muscles built up it can be a bit difficult. It's like working out slowly build your horse up to the harder work. Walk/trot lunging is a great start.
I have an Arab who won't lunge. She us incredibly smart but came broke and not trained. She also seems to refuse to trot along side of me. Can you offer some suggestions? I've leg trained her already so everything WHILE riding, she's good but ground work is terrible! Also, what should I do when she gets snotty and refuses to be led?
I always start in a round pin and use vocal and body cues. Only use a whip if she won’t move. Once your horse learns how to read your body language, add a lead rope. Then after that try lunging in a open arena so if she spooks she can’t get too far away. Hope this helped!
You need to desensitize him to the whip. He needs to see it as an aid, not a whip. There are lots of videos on this. Only attempt when he is listening and engaged with you. Tristan tucker has lots on this, warwixk schiller.
I have Arabic horse and he is 16 years old but his shape is not good I don’t know why like you can see the bones is coming out and his belly is fat and there is gap in between how can I make this better any one have idea is it the food or the training or what ! ! !

Yes! Great thing to be aware of!

To exercise my horse literally all i have to do is put him in his paddock and walk up to him holding his halter and off he goes... 🐴💨

I need this for my friends horse!! Thank you (My friend is injured I’ve been taking care of her horse. Unfortunately her horse is a little too advanced for me to ride)
my horse won't lunge on a lead line but will do it without a lead he is the most stubborn horse I've ever dealt with in my life but I love him.
Amazing job, Carm and Tucker!! 🎉
Tysm Carmella 😘
I feel like a clipping video would be super helpful, just a suggestion 😁😁😁
Hi! Super video, thank you! Strange question but how tall are you? I am 5’ and deciding what size horse I need. Thanks! 🐴

I normally go every week about one time trail riding, the time I am riding varies from 2 to 3 hours up to 6.
Very helpful, very well explained 👍
I'm thinking that I would need to be in shape first, lol

Any tips on feet in the posting trot? As in keeping them in one place rather than all over the place?

I would recommend a quarter horse! They are generally levelheaded and on the smaller size, around 14-15 hands

Hello how is your morning going. We just had our foal out of mr Iil Tom blue about a week ago.
Congrats!
@@CarmellaAbel thanks! Also great video.
Me AND my horse are out of shape . Lol. Will try these

I don’t like jumping can I do some other exercises
How do you know all this?
My horse is so fat and lazy ! I don’t have an arena but plenty of hills! Hello from!
Who else is watching these helpful videos because they’re getting a horse soon?
If your horse it mortally afraid of a whip (most likely from bad experience in the past), how do you teach lunging?

I have a dominant gelding he knows how to longe but refuses to, maybe a lap or to no respect
My horse needs that he is really weak 😂
Just like me 😂

And the weather is too hot I can only ride him 6:00 morning
This is how I exercise my horse. When I go out to get him from the pasture I'll trot him up then lunge him
I think you are Tuckers mom....
Bestie you don't always have to do posting well you trot
My favorite exercise for the horse is barrel racing. Hi my, name is laurie I am 30 years old.
