My Gunner loves his fly mask. He rushes to put his nose in there each time. He hates bugs. I too would sing on the trail to distract my horse or scare animals 😂. No access to trails anymore 😢
You can use the stirrup leather on his neck to also start teaching him to ride bridleless/halterless. You use the reins initially to help the horse associate the neck strap signals with the equivalent reins signals.
Something we always did when hacking with less experienced riders is take a leadrope with us so we could pony them if they didn't have the horse under control. You can roll it up and then attach it to the saddle if the saddle has rings in the back or you can put it around the horses neck like you did with the stirrup leather. A leadrope can also be very usefull if a part of your bridle breaks.
Thing to remember is a bag like this on your body has the potential to get you hung up if things get ranchy. A better option is a small bag with snaps that clips onto belt loops.
Growing up in fox-hunting's spiritual heartland of the English Midlands, if it's leather, it gets waxed or it will parch and crack. We've been doing it since time immemorial on tack, clothing, even the sofa. The only tack that doesn't get waxed is some old gear from 50 years ago that's stored in the garage and that on the rocking horse.
I needed this stirrup hack weeks ago... When changing the height of jumps I always have to walk back to the mounting block because I'm super short with a big thoroughbred 😅
The fly mask you showed is the only kind my mare won’t take off. It’s soft and comfortable and if there is a rip in it, just sew with a zigzag stitch and it’s fine. Washes great too. Love the stirrup leather idea! Have several I’m not using, but will put them to work now. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this, Carmella!! Almost every one of these are new to me (newer horse owner)! I have a fly mask for my Margo but it is one of those bulkier ones and there is no way her halter is going over that thing. We were out on the trail yesterday, and the bugs/flies were horrible so definitely want to try this one. Loved all of the hacks! 🥰
A hack I know and use occasionally. If you find your shoulders falling forward a lot when you're riding. Take a dressage or normal riding crop (depending on your size) and stick it behind both arms and ride like that. It forces your elbows back along with your shoulders.
When you loose a stirrup in a course or your trotting/cantering or even just walking, you can lightly kick it and normally you can catch it on your foot easily! This has saved me in shows, lessons, trails, etc. (I don’t ride anymore but this is a trick it used to use)
What about a one rein stop? Not as much a hack as a safety thing, but it's also something I was taught when my horse doesn't want to stand still at the mounting block too.
I have a tip for dismounting and not breaking your ankles if you don’t want to risk messing up with the mounting block. If you take things slow when dismounting and figure out how your feet should land, it won’t hurt as much. I know from experience from being a short guy who likes to ride massive horses for whatever reason.
I just got my first horse 3 days ago. She's a nice calm mare, thank goodness, but I don't know anything. I've been going back through your videos and have learned so much! Thank you for all the information and tips and tricks!!
Another method I use is: I move my foot around and try to sense where the stirup is, it actually works very well, and most of the time it doesn't take that long
i'd say that the stirrup leather "neck strap" would be beneficial to riders who are learning to trot...help learn how to not pull on the reins and the horse's mouth
The dismount on a stepping block is great , the lesson horse i ride will walk over to the dismount block once were finished our ride and its great ,much easier on the joints for sure
-On hacks or something pack a halter! Especially if it’s long or you take a break so they can eat without a bit and just in general just incase you bridle breaks mid lesson but you can’t get a new bridle you can detach the lead rope as a rein or smth -When tacking up if you use a western saddle or a saddle that’s heavy put it on their side first then stop and continue it helps your arms! -if your saddle is fit correctly you can put it by the head -if it’s not to heavy- and slide it and usually it just stops when it’s set right
Great video! We have the same type of masks for our mustangs with one difference. Ours have 3 Velcro straps instead of the sleeve style. He might not like the feel of the sleeve. These are some great tips. The dismount at the mounting block is genius!
My horse has the same problem with flies in summer as Tucker has. I even have a mask very similar to yours and in blue. But because, like Tucker, mine doesn't enjoy the mask being slid over his face I've cut it open on the underside and sewn velcro to it. So now I start putting the ears in, then quickly fit the eye mesh and close it underneath. It also makes the mask a tiny bit larger because it was tight.
A hack I love is when your saddle pad gets all full with your horses hair you can take a shutter and use it on the saddle pad and the hair comes right off
I ❤ your teaching. I had my first lesson yesterday after nearly 50 years and I loved it! Although you're American, is the the British version of riding please?
Oh I thought this would be a sarcastic parody 😢. Still great hacks, I talk to my horses all the time and I sing no matter what I’m doing, so long as no one is around😂 ❤❤
I would have only one issue with the getting your right foot into the right sturrup hack at 9:00, it’s that my horse often walks as I’m getting on and so I worry about falling because of not being on the saddle or have ping my weight properly distributed
My horse does this a lot, too, and I’m working really hard trying to correct her with this. Someone recently told me to pull the left rein towards me which in turn slightly tips her head towards me, and they are much less likely to walk off. It is working really well so far! 💜
Look into the Flip Belt! If you don't need to carry much (like maybe a phone and some money) it is the best solution ever. Doesn't flop around at all!!
Here's one riding hack you put your foot. Well, you're toes facing outward when you Go to jump and your horse stops it basically stops you from flying off it
Do you have any tips on how to get my horse to steer better with leg pressure? She’s really good at neck reigning but she doesn’t respond to leg pressure very well.
Hey Carmella (and other horsey people) I HAVE A QUESTION! What kind of riding boots are best?? I am going to start riding lessons soon but I don’t have any riding shoes (just tennis shoes) what Brand or kind of riding boots do I buy? And is it okay to wear western boots when riding English? Thanks for reading, hope someone can answer my questions! Have a wonderful day!❤🐴
Hello there I’m a English rider (for 1 1/2 years) I wear Dublin boots and there great if your going more expensive Lemieux and Aritat are great but since you just starting and not sure if your going to continue riding I wouldn’t put A HEAP of money into it like 200 max I’d say Hope your riding goes well
Honestly when I first started I had rain boots with a heel (don’t recommend for long term or anything with cantering) they worked fine for intro but after that I upgraded to a boot with a heel from a standard shoe store . Those worked great for a while but when I started jumping I finally invested 150 into actual riding boots, I bought this pair from the brand auken and I love them! I bought a tall boot… they’re great in the pastures rain or shine(waterproof), it’s easy to clean and I prefer them to chaps . Also super comfortable for doing chores as well as riding.
Hack 9 i do Natural. And o haven’t rode much do to injury but if you can’t ride much go bond with them like they love horse treats and grass but don’t give them a lot of grass in case of colic
I like the first hack but I wouldn't recommend it on a road with cars coming by because I wouldn't want my horse to get hit by a car, the runner can hold on for a second 😂😂o,g I need to put beeswax on my saddle I ride a lively little pony who's just gone put to a very grassy field 😂omg we always use stirrup leathers as neck straps haha especially xc
I’m pretty sure it’s Ariat there great but expensive if your just starting out I’d recommend a less expensive brand ( I use Dublin and it works great I’ve had my for a couple year now)
Yes, your pony is very well behaved but I completely disagree with the way you dismounted, a, leaving your foot in the stirrup (if he moved off you'd be flat on your back b, that wobbly tree stump - what are you thinking? A friend broke his ankle last year on the same thing as his horse spooked. Come on, advise to dismount on a solid mounting block and never leave your foot in the stirrup, maybe that's western but you are riding in an English saddle.
Hey !!! You're gorgeous 😘😘😘 Question ... We got an older trail ride horse That is skinny and lethargic ... may you please give me tips so that I help him recover and bulk up?
Hopefully he has seen a vet if he is in this condition, and your vet has given you advice to get him back to good health again. Then you can do exercises to build his top line (Carmella has videos on great exercises you can do!) once he has been properly vetted.

LOVE THAT LAST HACK ABOUT GETTING YOUR FOOT IN THE RIGHT STIRRUP!!🥳
I know! I’m like, why did it take me this long to figure out 🤦♀️
I just saw this today and I’m so excited to use it the next time I ride, I struggle so much with it 😂
Same
Definitely love the bag. I don't like my phone on my saddle. If I fall off, I don't want my phone with my horse, I want it with me. Great video!
Great point!!! And if it just in your pocket, there is a greater risk of breaking it if you fall!
Thing to remember is a bag like this on your body has the potential to get you hung up if things get ranchy.
A better option is a small bag with snaps that clips onto belt loops.
@@tracyjohnson5023 That's what I have. You can put it around your leg, waist, or I think like a crossbody. It came with a couple different straps.

How funny, i used to sing when riding horses felt tense. It makes you breathe better, so stay relaxed 😂
Love the fly mask hack! You always give such great tips! Thanks!
We use fresh basil from our garden ... A handful and just rub everywhere the are beasties ... It helps for a while
I love the beeswax trick wished I knew about it when I was younger and had horses.
Is it something you buy from shops and can be used for other purposes?
@@wajdiamayreh930 For sure I’ve used it on furniture.
Wow love how unashamed you are of your faith may God bless you sister 🙏 ❤ so nice to see a bold Christian horsey channel
Totally agreed here!!❤
When you've got to tighten the stirrup once mounted, instead of putting the leg towards, it's more comfortable if you put it above the saddle blocks.

Singing while you ride also forces you to breathe deeply, which is great if you’re feeling anxious.

They actually sell a strap that u can hook to ur saddle horn that lays lower than your stirrup so u can use that to climb up as well.
Not much help with an English saddle though.
