  • Take a massive leap forward in living sustainably by using your grey water from the washing machine in the garden, and in my instance, in my urban food forest.

    If you want to become an eco warrior and make a real and tangible difference to the world or your local surroundings, then one of the most important things you can do is start to become smarter with the way you use or consume water. One of the biggest culprits of water use, besides ridiculously full bath's, are washing machines. They consume a large amount of water that just ends up in water treatment plants and use a lot of harmful chemicals.
    By making smart choices, like switching to eco friendly or biodegradable products such as washing detergent and fabric softener, you can start to capture all the water from your washing machine and use it in the garden.
    My urban food forest in Cape Town is 100% supplied by grey water from the washing machine. My plants and fruit trees are thriving, producing and have a steady supply of free water to keep their roots at optimal moisture levels, all without having to waste a drop or pay for more water.
    If you want to make start making a difference then you need to start using grey water by capturing the water from your washing machine to use in your garden.

    I am collecting the grey water in 2 gallon plastic kitty litter containers and screw top lids make it so easy to take to the plants. We are in a drought here in the upper midwest and this helps keep our pump from running so much. Pray for rain. 🙏🏻

      Oh no, shame, that really sucks and I sure will 🙏
      We had a very similar situation here in Cape Town a few years ago where it was termed "Day Zero" where they were counting down the days until our dams all ran dry. It's was terrifying as we were about 50 days from no water anywhere with very strict restrictions in place (50L a day).
      I really hope you get blessed with massive rains soon 🌻

    great video and awesome content, im in cape town and i use a 500l jojo tank to collect the grey water from shower and washing machine i have a ball valve on my tank outlet which runs a 32mm pipe with a reducer to 22mm then again to 15mm this creates alot of pressure in the pipe allowing the water to be gravity fed to my lawn only the fruit and veg garden i do manual like you with a bucket system

      Oh wow that is really awesome and thanks for sharing with me! Are you putting microbes or anything into your jojobto stop it from going rancid? I would be super keen to try this and the brilliant reducer thing you are doing to increase pressure. Great job! 👏🌻

    I have one suggestion, u can try pipiline or drip system to use that water in your garden.thank you .

      Yes, you are absolutely right, although I find having pipes limits where you add water and can lead to erotion with the force of the ware coming out.
      I would also not suggest drip irrigation for this, unless you had a really good filter, as the debris from a shower or washing machine can very easily clog the drippers, but very good suggestions, thank you 🌻

    Which biodegradable brands would you suggest for laundry and bath time?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  Год назад

      Good question and thanks for asking! For laundry I feel you have a lot more option. I have used Simple Truth from checkers for laundry without hassle as it is readily available and I know Faithful to Nature has quite a big range. Anything will do in this department as long as its eco friendly and biodegradable.
      For person care I found lots of issues! Firstly, most brands go us on reducing water and packaging by using bars. Specifically shampoo and soap bars, however, the ingredients are still toxic.
      I use a brand called Three Sisters & Co. as they use 100% natural ingredients and I have used the water in the garden without any issues.
      I would love to hear what you have found to work if you have any additional options 🌻

    How much would you use in a cold water wash? 5 kg machine.

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  Год назад

      I am not sure. I only do cold washes and my machine is a 13kg, so substantially less, but I am not sure of the actual amount 🌱

    Even better still…make your own detergents. It’s very easy and inexpensive.

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  2 года назад +1

      That is 100% on my to do list. Do you have a tried and tested recipe that works for you with readily available ingredients? There are so many options out there 🌱

      @@MySustainabilityJourney yes, I’ve tweaked the recipe I found about 8 years ago: 1 bar Laundry Soap - finely grated (feldspar is one brand available). 2 Cups Washing Soda (Or bicarbonate soda). 2 Cups Borax. I keep a kitchen grater in the laundry. I usually make up to a years worth at a time as I don’t particularly love grating the soap ;-) I use undiluted white vinegar as fabric softener.

      @@sandrasstitches6108 Is this a liquid mix or a dry mix? And is the bar soap eco-friendly? Thanks

    • @sandrasstitches6108
      @sandrasstitches6108 Год назад

      @@daneilkemp837 it’s a dry mix. I have a septic tank and grey water goes onto my gardens, so I check the ingredients before I buy them to be sure they’re safe to use on my property.
