    I haven’t made pesto in a long time but I can tell you that homemade pesto is vastly superior to store bought. And hurrah for experimental cooking. Just about the only thing I kinda follow a recipe on is baked goods just because they can be a little tricky. I love your cooking videos because that’s the kind of cooking I do.

    Hi Craig. I cut back my huge perennial basil yesterday because it's getting out of hand. I have a very large bowl of leaves to use now. I usually use origanum with the basil leaves because that's the two herbs that grow well in my garden. Apparently you can use any herbs to make presto, or a combination of. I'm surprised to see you don't use parmesan. Nice to know you don't have to because it's not something I always have on hand. We use sunflower seeds in our pesto but I'm going to try flaxseed next. Thanks for the video!

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 3 дня назад

      Thanks for leaving a comment and sharing how you make your Pesto 😁 my biggest problem with traditional pesto is the cost. Adding pine nuts and parmesan quickly makes it incredibly expensive. I absolutely love your shout on using origanum! I am definitely going to give that a try next time because that's also a herb that grows in abundance. I love how this video and thread is turning into so many different ideas. That's exactly why I didn't want to give a specific recipe, but rather a guideline because there are just so many ways to make it and I love hearing your Pesto options 🌻

    Could you use this in cooking, like lasagne for example? I know it sounds odd as it can be rather invasive, however, I have trouble growing mint here and perhaps that’s a clue as to my lack of success with growing Basil also..? I was hoping to grow tons of mint as it’s useful indoors to mask the scent trails of mice. This helps keep them away from your pantries etc. Ah you’ve just solved the problem of your old neighbours 😃 You needed to gift them a perennial basil plant to enjoy basil tea ☕ 😂 You may have had a more pleasant neighbour 🍃☕

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 3 дня назад

      Hahaha, unfortunately I don't think any amount of calming tea will turn that neighbour into a nice person 😂 Oh, absolutely, you can add it into all sorts of cooking. You can add it into lasagna as you say, fresh on pizza or anything else, in salads, etc. I would just use about half what you usually would with normal basil because of how potent it is. It is amazing fresh though! As for growing, perennial basil actually thrives on neglect, much like mint. They both like full sun and just enough water to survive, not much more. I really hope you manage to get a plant going to grow your own because it's just so yum and versatile 🌻🌻🌻

    I’m hearing a crunching sound coming from under the bark in a ficus that was brought inside last fall. I live in Utah so it is dry climate. Powdery particles come out when I loosen the bark and a ring has been created around the upper stem of the tree. This tree is under five foot and is composed of seven 1” or less trunks. I assume I cut off the dead growth. Then, what?

    I just did a hard prune of my perennial basil. New shoots are sprouting from the thick woody stems. The bush was getting huge (1.5 x 1.5 m) I use it in stews or pesto for baking. The leaves and taste is very robust.

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 7 дней назад

      Oh nice! Yeah they can get pretty big and grow aggressively. This is why I absolutely love perennial basil and much prefer it over the annual varieties. I'm so glad you are also managing to use it and I have to agree that the flavour is strong and as you say, robust. I have a recipe I'm going to do a video on this week. Have you found a recipe that works for you to make pesto?

    • @grimsqueaker5333
      @grimsqueaker5333 7 дней назад

      I make a Franken-pesto with what is on hand and I add amounts by tasting. Usually sunflower seeds, a neutral oil (it's hard to get olive oil with the right taste in my area), lots of lemon or lime juice and preserved lemons (also homemade from the garden), garlic, cumin and salt( if needed). Adding milder tasting leaves like spinach or sweet potato leaves can help to bulk out the pesto and dilute the very strong basil flavour. A little goes a long way with this great tasting herb.

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 7 дней назад

      Oh amazing, thanks for sharing! I also mostly franken-pesto it (love that you named it that 😁) and add lots of lemon juice. I love your option with spinach to bulk it up because as you say a little goes a long way and this basil is pretty powerful from a taste POV. Thanks again for sharing 🌻

    Thanks for your very practical and useful video. I look forward to seeing the progress of the leaf compost in the follow-up videos. I do not have much grass clippings. However, I have lots of stinging nettle. Would this be a good substitute for grass clippings in this compost recipe?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney

      It is the greatest of pleasure and I recorded the 1 week follow up today, so I am just as excited to see how this all plays out. Yes, you can 100% use nettle. They are very nutritious and will add a lot of value to your leaf-based compost pile in addition to the nitrogen it brings so go ahead and use as much of them as you can. It will make great compost 🌻

The reason being that if there are any eggs or larvae then you are keeping them inside (like bark) and it makes it harder for you to flush or clean out. Termites might be different and they will just make new holes, so what I would do if I were you is add lots of diatomaceous earth around the base of the tree as this gets into their exoskeleton and suffocates them. Just remember to reapply after every watering. Hope this helps 🌻

    What did you do with part you chopped off? Was that propagated into a new tree?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 13 дней назад

      Good question and yes, I did 😁 you can actually go and look at my fig propagation using cuttings video where I used the top and side branches of a topped fig tree 🌻

    Turns out you are surrounded by nitrogen as well.

      Yip, totally and the nitrogen doesn't somehow disappear because of all the carbon 😁

    Any advice on how to keep the bugs from eating my leaves?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 15 дней назад

      Good question and sorry to hear you are struggling with critters eating your leaves. There are a few options, depending on what's causing the damage. If you have worm based problems then you can apply BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis) as that is a very effective and natural caterpillar option. If you have other pests like scale, aphids or bugs then you can look at something like neem oil, or you can cover your tree with a mosquito net to keep bugs away. Alternatively you can have other issues like ants or weevils and then adding diatomaceous earth around the base of the tree will help. I hope this gives you a few options to consider, but drop me another comment if you have particular pests you want some insight on 🌻

    What guava variety requires thinning?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 16 дней назад

      As far as I know you would need to thin them all besides a cherry guava we that's more of shrub/bush and puts on much smaller fruits so it can handle the full load. You don't technically need to thin guava trees, but if you don't you will end up with much smaller fruits that are not as sweet with lots of them staying green and not ripening, which is a waste 🌻

    I'm new to trying my hand at all the leafy green edibles and in my rabbit hole info dive, feeding nitrogen to the soil is so essential, with this kind of brown/green compost recommended to mulch with. Thank you so much for your videos! Very clear and concise!

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 17 дней назад

      It is such a pleasure and I'm so glad you got value from watching this video 💚 Yeah, the way you are doing it also works a charm as the leaves make a great mulch layer that the worms and microbes break down and move to the soil underneath. Keep up the amazing work you are doing by growing your own food 🌻🌻🌻

    That’s very similar to the way I compost. I use rather thinner layers of leaves and maybe a little more grass clippings. I also add veggie scraps, the refuse that collects in the last bit of dishwater (I hand wash with biodegradable dish detergent) plus anything else that will compost.-I turn it into another bin after 6 months then let it sit for 6 months. I’m interested in seeing how yours turns out.

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 17 дней назад

      Oh awesome, I'm so glad to hear that! Yeah, you can really add in so many different things and the black compost bin you can see in the video is fled with food scraps and leaves as that also makes a great combination. I also love horse manure composting and with leaf mold and horse manure you would have the best possible growing soil structure and then adding fresh, new compost made from everything else will work a treat. I tried to keep this one as easy as possible to get people to try composting at home as there are so many videos that make composting so complicated when it can be incredibly simple. The great news is the dry leaf compost heap is already building up some proper heat, so I am already starting with the next video 😁 Thanks for taking the time to leave me a comment with your thoughts and experiences 🌻🌻🌻

    Thank You Craig for your video. Last year and again this year I raked up bags of Maple 🍁 and Malberry leaves. We have a very tall Maple 🍁 tree in our complex. I spend about an hour raking up the leaves. I asked my husband to make gaget to hold the plastic bags open. As the wind blows the bag closed just as I am about to put a bunch of leaves in. I use 2 rakes that have broken handles. They act like 2 huge hands to scoop up a pile of leaves. I also went to the local park last year, a few mins away. At least 20 Maple 🍁 trees growing there. I am going to do the same this year. My husband with the help of our grandson built a leaf bin out of 4 x pinewood pallets last year, and a friend very kindly gave me bags 1 x cubic metre in size. My husband placed the one bag onto a pinewood pallet, also last year. I filled up many bags, I raked up in that local park last year. I checked the other day, and about a foot deep underneath the leaves, it was pitch black soil. (Black Gold) It was full of earthworms and grubs. They did a great job. Our daughter and son-in-law gifted me a vacuum/ blower to chop the leaves last Christmas. So grateful, much easier to use than the lawnmower. But the downside you get plastered with dust in the process 😄😂🤣. I had to have a bath afterwards. I did an experiment today. I mixed the chopped up Maple 🍁 leaves with coffee grounds and freshly shredded leaves from the Pride of India, which needed a trim. We borrowed our daughter and son-in-laws shredder. I put the mix into a black plastic bag, punched holes at the bottom of bag with a screwdriver. Put rain water on top and closed the top. Leaving it in a sunny place. I got the idea from Huw Richards. 1/3 dry leaves, 1/3 fresh cut grass, and a 1/3 of coffee grounds. Our grass has stopped growing, because we are going into our winter ❄️ So I used what was available. I have shared this video with family, friends and neighbours. Which I always do. Looking forward to seeing your results of your experiment. Like you Craig, I love to experiment. I always learn something and it gives me confidence to explore more options. And it's a lot of fun too, and to see the results is lovely. 🍁🍂💚🌿🍁🍂💚🌿🍁🍂💚🌿🍁🍂💚🌿🍁🍂💚🌿

      Aw, wow Pam, thank you for writing me such an incredible comment with all of your experiences. Sounds like you have it all under control and yes, a leaf blower makes the world of difference when it comes to how quickly the leaves break down AND the mess factor 😂 really love hearing how you do things and it also helps me learn and get ideas, so thank you very much for sharing your ideas on my videos 💚🌻🌻🌻

    I normally plant potatoes in 18 gallon plastic tubs and used to add soil as they grow up... But this year.. I planted them all the way down and filled soil to the top. And there were no signs for growth for almost 3 weeks. I was about to dig them after 2 weeks and then I came across this video and it helped. It took 3 weeks for them to reach to the top but it also helped to plant them in early Feb (before the last day of frost).

    My orange tree is still a sapling so young it's trunk is still green and twig like it literally looks like one of the branches of your tree. but it has flowerbuds Is this a bad sign? should I remove the buds if flowering takes energy. it is not a graft

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney 14 дней назад

      Really good questions and thanks for taking the time to leave me a comment. Yes, if your tree is a saing, or very young, then remove all of the flowers. Every flower that forms is a waste of energy that could have gone into root or foliar growth. Once you have a 3 to 4 year old tree with thicker branches that can hold fruit you can start leaving a few fruits and then every year let it bear a few more 🌻
