I love mixed media, so yes, I'd love to see more. I love what you did with that one, and it was my favorite! Also, I wanted to mention that Prismacolor (my favorite colored pencil) also makes a hard core pencil. If you're interested, they're called Prismacolor Verithin. The other thing to know is that Prismacolor makes their own sharpener and it's worth buying for these pencils. It reduces the constant breakage you experienced.
I love the way you did the watercolor underpainting with the pencil incorporated. Wonderful ❤❤❤Please, yes, more mixed media - it's my favorite!! ❤️🌹❤️
You have your own unique way of braking a picture into shapes, it looks simple at first, but then you take it further and create such an interesting composition, your color choice is also very pleasing to the eye, you really are inspiring. Thank you for taking the time to share your art with us! As for color pencils on gouache, I have had the same problem, the waxy or oily color pencil doesn’t show wel, but I found out that water soluble pencils work much better, I do use them dry though there is always an option to add water. I have visited Austria two weeks ago, I really love your country, it is just breathtakingly beautiful! Wonderful people as well! I’m sending you a big virtual hug, understandably we all feel drained sometimes, when I need to recharge, I usually go to a library, I always find new ideas there! Have a great day and know that you are appreciated ❤️
I love mixed media, it is so interesting to see how different artist use them differently. I loved all three of them. The first one is so bright and joyful and the last one is so simple but beautiful. Your videos inspire me to paint all the time. So, thank you!
I love my Prisma's! And I get what you've said about how soft they are and how quickly they wear down. It really is a downside because they are a little pricey. There are certain colors that I use over and over, and I've been using them long enough to know which ones they are. Fortunately, my local art store sells loose Prisma's, so I just go there every so often and stock up on three or four each of the colors that I use more frequently.
Thanks melany, More mixed media please, I love the result and the one I prefer is the last one. Do you think one day you will make a video like this with Derwent inktens pencils 😊?
These were so much fun in such different ways. Your creativity has no bounds, it seems. And your ideas are always beautiful AND achievable. I truly admire that in you. And yes, definitely go for posting less often if that is better for your mental and creative health. I know the algorithms prefer creators with crazy busy posting schedules, but to be honest I get kind of overwhelmed if my favourite creators post so often. I just can't keep up, so then videos end up in playlists for later and potentially get forgotten.
I love the mixed media stuff that you do. Love the final piece the best of the 3 that you did in this video! My personal preference is for less talking so I can just watch you create & be inspired.
@@AnoopSingh-kv9wr mixed media is when you take 2 or more different mediums to create a piece of artwork. For example what Melanie did with her last sketchbook piece she used watercolor first and then put the colored pencil over top. You can use a variety of different media in order to get the look that you want, its a lot of fun.
The last one turned out so good! I appreciate the mixed media videos because I don't know how these different types of supplies can be used together. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I love mixed media, and I would like to see more of it from your, but I totally understand your point with the algorithm . I think it is important as an artist to find the balance between marketable pieces and enjoying creating for yourself, because at the end of the day that will keep fueling your inspiration. Love your work and love the last piece!
These are fantastic sketchbook ideas, I think the last one is my favourite! I would love to try prismacolour pencils too, but you’re spot-on they are really difficult to find in Europe unfortunately 😢
I haven't followed you long, so i don't know your range of mediums. But i wonder if soft pastels might be fun for you to try? The different grip on the pastel and the way it's applied might change up motions enough to give your hand a break? Also different techniques and medium might help with burnout?
certain colors of prismacolor are notorious for breaking and that specific green is one of them. Here, I can buy them individually which is really helpful so I usually buy and extra in that color and the Tuscan Red! What I've noticed about prismacolor vs other pencils I've tried is their ability to blend and layer with a finished product that most people can't tell apart from a painting. I've tried several other brands and while I like each for different reasons, that seems to be the strength of prismacolor. I love your mixed media! To get the "painted" look with colored pencils takes forever, I could use this a shortcut. Thank you for sharing I'd love to see more!
If you have wrist troubles I would recommend caran d’ache luminance pencils. They colour like butter, they are so vibrant and soft and I haven’t had breakage problems. They also have great lightfast ratings unlike the polychromos. I think the pencil over gouache issue might be because you press to hard. The trick with colour pencils lots of light layers work great. If you want options for removing the white of the paper you could try multiple layers with blending stumps. Gamsol or zest it moves the pigment into the textured areas. Or you could try Bristol smooth paper to draw on. Those all worked great for me.
I love all your tutorials but am always happy when you do gouache ones. Mixed media is awesome too - that 3rd painting was really cute and really effectively explained for a beginner to follow along. Would also love it if you uploaded weekly again, but your health comes first. Take care 💖
In my opinion, Prismacolors really shine when you're shading and doing gradients. I'm writing this before I'm done with the video so you might do more shading in your last piece but the burnishing technique where you do lots of layers is amazing with these colored pencils. That would also eliminate being able to see the paper through the medium
Hey Melanie, I love your ideas. Whatever you bring to your channel, it's all so unique and refreshing. All quirky pieces of art inspire me to fill my own sketchbooks, especially the ones that are more experimental where you try out new styles and media. I would highly encourage you to try out everything you want to experiment with, more. I think the algorithm will automatically understand that and give you the results you look for. And being your regular viewer I can definitely guarantee we'll love watching what you enjoy creating! ❤
Oh, yes, please! I'd love to see you do more Mixed Media! I'm a mixed media nut myself. I usually use a mix of gouache, watercolor and prismacolors in my own art :) . It's neat seeing folks use similar media to me!
I was hoping you would use the pencils in combination with some other medium, and you did -- saving the best for last. I enjoy using pencils over my watercolor and my Copic work, mostly because it brings a piece to life quickly. Pencils on their own can take days because of all the layering, and it does tire my hand out. Thank you for sharing!
With prisma putting down the color in a circular motion helps to reduce the white show through. They are also made for layering starting soft and going over with a little more light pressure. I don’t get along with color pencils because I’m impatient and love to lay down my color once.
I love mixed media. You provide so much value in your Videos and I learned a lot from you. Watercolor and Gouache were my least favourite mediums but you motivated me to give them a try again and again and again. Thank you for your hard work 🥰
If you like doing it how could it be a fail! This is the first video I’ve ever seen pop up in my feed from you. I really enjoyed it and loved the combo as I do all medias. You got a new subscriber and I will check out your courses.
You should use the tgal sharpener...it gives you a smaller point...like how they arrive in the case. If you sharpen too long they break. Very light pressure and layers are best with prismatic coloured pencils x
Thanks for the tip! I didn't have an issue with them breaking while drawing but rather they got used up quickly and when I sharpened them they broke in the sharpener 🥺
Would really like to see more mixed media. I usually use alcohol markers with colored pencils, but I'm forcing myself to try other media. Love watching your videos while drawing; they're very inspiring and they help me be more creative with how I approach my art.👍❤
Hi Mel, I really loved your doodles today! They're very detailed and colourful, which makes me happy especially now in summer :3 As a style- and medium hopper have some experience with different brands of coloured pencils - I think you already mentioned something very important! Prisma Colors are not for details, because they are just so soft. But they are good for making portraits and underfur. If you want the details, polychromos are wonderful :3 Thank you for sharing your pretty art
I've used Prismacolors for years. Very nice pencils. One set I've found lasts a long time. I'm in the US. I also miss being able to buy brands only available in Europe. 😊
If you have a colorless blender (alcohol marker) you can use it to smooth out the coloring of the prisms colors. It will stain the marker but it breaks down the color in the pencil and blends it out.
I really love mixed media videos as I also doing mixed media. I could imagine doing five years of creating videos and art content can be really hard and exhausting. But also idk if you tube lets you take a break?
Unless I missed something I do not see you taking advantage of the Prismacolor "blender" pencil. If you like bold, flat color then the blender is the perfect pencil to use to make the colors look more solid, if that makes sense. Give it a try, epepecially when layering 2 or more Prismacolor hues on top of each other. I love using the colorless blender. Thank you for this video!
Prisma colors have the problem with breaking up into the pencil shaft because they are not all centered properly. If you buy them open stock and can check them yourself , you might have better luck. I've also heard that they can be fixed in the microwave. I don't really know if this works, I've never tried it myself.
You can use alcohol on a brush or cotton tip to spread and blend the colored pencils and that will blend over those rough spots and make the paper nkt show thru so much
Thanks for the tip! I did this a few years ago and it works quite well but it did bleed through to the other side of the page, so I'm a bit careful with alcohol in sketchbooks 😅 have you tried this method in a sketchbook?
You are very creative. You might want to search for the ways to fix it if your pencils if you find them breaking a lot. One way is to put the pencil you are having trouble with in a heating pad for like 20 min. I believe and it remolds the core in the pencil.
I don't think I've ever seen you use colored pencils before! I love cps - Prismacolors are my favorite - but I love using them most on toned or colored paper, so when the paper shows through it adds to the piece, rather than using them on white paper. Your watercolor underpainting is another great technique, and people also often will use markers for an underpainting. Alcohol and Prismacolors are a match made in heaven! (Fun fact: there was some movie I saw where the main character was gifted a set of 12 Prismacolors at the beginning of the movie. Then seven years later he has a full sketchbook, and he's STILL using that same set! Totally unrealistic!)
I have found better success at using colored pencils on gouache, watercolor, etc by using Krylon workable fixative on gouache layer before adding colored pencil
I’m still crying for having to pay 500 for these pencils last year, since they simply do not sell in my country. And it was on sale! And it was worth it. Best colored pencils that I have ever used!

Prismacolor makes a colorless blender pencil that might solve the issue with paper showing through.
I love the last painting with watercolor and color pencil! You've inspired me to give this a go!

Prisma colors have the problem with breaking up into the pencil shaft because they are not all centered properly. If you buy them open stock and can check them yourself , you might have better luck. I've also heard that they can be fixed in the microwave. I don't really know if this works, I've never tried it myself.
