A 26 year old man, self-taught on several instruments, wrote this. Astounding what The Beatles did at such young ages, in such a short period of time. Their greatness will never be matched. Ever.
I was just thinking the same thing. Just before the Beatles, you had the Beach Boys, then Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, etc. They were all great talents, but they were all typecast. They had their unique sound and people instantly knew who they were. Not so with the Beatles. From I Want to Hold Your Hand, to Help, to Eleanor Rigby, to Back in the USSR, to Helter Skelter. They reinvented themselves with each album. And none of their music was simple. It was a special time with special people from a very special generation. I am just glad to have grown up during it and to have witnessed it evolve.
Their music changed with the Rubber Soul album. Didn't care too much for early Beatles, except, Ask Me Why, If I fell, and This Boy, It Won't Be Long, And I Love Her, and Tell Me Why.
@@allenf.5907 The only time I saw him play it, was in the movie Get Back. Not the entire thing, but just noodling around. It sounded exactly like the recording, so I’m sure it was the same piano. Love that song!

I don't think it's underrated, really. The White Album is highly regarded, many people's favorite. It also has songs like Mother Nature's Son, so it's easy to lose sight of how great Martha is.
I think Macca's entire catalogue from 67 through 82 is criminally underrated, he didn't stop writing these great songs after the Beatles disbanded, just the production quality went down because he thought he wouldn't need George Martin after they disbanded and that Linda could serve in lieu of John vocally which was a mistake on Paul's part during those first several years where as she couldn't stay in tune..
“Martha My Dear” is honestly my favorite Beatles song. There is a video here on YT with two teenage boys playing a brilliant arrangement for guitar and banjo and the smiles on their faces were just so life-affirming. The endless power of Macca ♥️
I used to sing this with my late brother while he played it on the piano. I just love this tune! The 70's were often fun. I'm 65 and can still hit those notes. "All we need is love"
Isn't it, though. I love this song so much. I named my blonde lab Martha for Paul's beloved Martha. The song is so sweet and simple ... Just Paul telling his dog how much he loves her. I sing it to my Martha all the time, God help her. I'm no great singer. It's just love.
White Album will always be favorite. This song is a masterpiece of arrangement, and really points to the things Wings would do melodically in the years to come. Uplifting and joyful in Sir Paul’s inimitable way.
I always just loved Abbey Road and poo poo'd White Album in comparison but getting into this song now, Me and My Monkey, in addition to the hits..it truly is great..even if there are a couple songs I can't listen to (rare for me and the beatles).
Always loved this song. I was 13 years old when the album came out. I remember like it was yesterday, My older brother, stopped over with the "New" Beatles album, "The White Album".. I was like they say "On Cloud 9" and it was a double album!!!!! I just sat on my bed and listened to it from side one to side 4. I even sat through "Revolution #9. I thought it would get better as it went on. It didnt. Back then I had no idea about Multi-track recording. Years later they would say Only Paul's on that song, or only John. How can this be? But it was true, with Multi-Track recording, one man can be an entire band. I should know, I own a 16 track digital recorder and play, Drums, Bass, Keyboards, Guitars, Vocals and whatever I want to add. I also learned that on "The White Album" Ringo quit for a spell! So, I later found out that Paul plays the drums on the two beginning tracks, " _Back in the U.S.S.R_ ." & " _Dear Prudence_ " And also plays all instruments on "Wild Honey Pie" I had no idea until I read this many years later..
One of my favorites. It's just a long bridge begging for a verse or refrain, then resolves to a refrain that just turns out to also be a bridge to the next bit, and by the time you think you are starting to figure it out, it ends. Sting said in an interview that music must have surprises to be worth listening to, and this one is surprises from beginning to end.
I don't agree that it's a simple little tune. The shapes and phrasings of the tune are really interesting and unexpected with syncopated rhythms and contrapuntal writing for piano. Musicologists have taken this apart. The opening bars are weird, with an extra beat changing the metre from 4/4 to 5/4 and the key moves from its apparent Eb major through F major finally to Bb mixolydian. It's a very clever piece.
I don't think of it as simple. It is so rich and has three different gorgeous sections. Melodically, it is an embarrassment of riches. If it's simple, it's the kind of simple only a genius can discover. If it's simple, it's also melodically complex at the same time.
Might sound strange, but I start crying as soon as I hear that piano at the beginning of the song. The reason is probably that this song always reminds me of the day back in the summer of 2017 when my dad walked into my room and told me my cat who lived with my mom had passed away. I had known her since I was born and so I can’t help but cry when I hear this. Sorry if I sound like I’m trying to get people to feel sorry for me.
No... Not silly... I lost my sweet dog, Rocky, last year, and this song was so much appreciated. I STILL cry every time I hear it... The beauty and simplicity of this song is incredible... And the Beatles are amazing 😍... Best song writers ever!
This is one of the best songs McCartney ever wrote, it's impeccably done, the B section anticipates Disco, the guy was a freaking genius and yeah he had something over Lennon, Lennon didn't know what to do with himself as his songwriting partner had transcended him
They're just different. Lennon had some great songs on Abbey Road. They feel like they were written for the group instead of McCartney and George Martin doing whatever they needed to make McCartney's songs great. Lennon's very best songs might be on Revolver. It's easy to forget all these superlative songs were written by Lennon-McCartney, a songwriting *duo*.
Well, I think John was also a songwriting genius who could create gorgeous melodies almost at will. But admittedly, while John has some truly great vocal performances, McCartney's voice was just incomparable.
Paul's melodic genius when he was in the Beatles was matched only by the gorgeous things he could do with his voice, from the most dulcet creamy tones to roaring and masculine, and whatever the man of a thousand voices put out, it was always a gorgeous sound, especially in his youth when he was in the Beatles. This song has three different gorgeous sections. 1) the section with the refrain "martha my dear, 2) the second section beginning with "hold your head up, you silly girl" and 3) the third section that begins "take a good look around you..." Most pop songs don't even have one beautiful section. Two beautiful sections is not common; and three, each one increasing the pleasure of the last, as in this song, is incredibly rare. But not so rare for McCartney when he was in the Beatles. He could write new, gorgeous melodies almost at will.
We Boomers are so lucky to have had such a rich amount of music content at our listening pleasure all these years ago...one of my favorites! Was Paul secretly messaging Jane...ohhh🤫
Never reached this level again? Hmm. I really love this song, but there are some incredible things on Abbey Road, like "She came in through the bathroom window, or oh darling. And others. I'd agree that when Paul left the Beatles, he generally wasn't at the same level as when he was in the Beatles.
The thing about this song is it's so Different. Hard to even describe it. I thought, "Well that isn't the kind of thing I'm used to hearing." I remember Novermber, I think that's when the white album came out.
Hi Oliver, yes you are right. This was recorded at Trident. I said in the opening credits of the video it was Abbey Road. That is incorrect, thanks for the correction. At this time (while making the "White Album"), the Beatles were using more than one studio at the same time, especially as it started to get near the release date of the album in November. Jane had recently left Paul when he wrote this song, and several of his friends commented on how much the breakup affected him, that he was "heartbroken". Thanks for sharing! So unexpected to learn that Ringo and John were not involved. Is this version a re-mix? Left channel brass and bass sound more dominant than versions I have. Who played the classic but simple drum line?
I wonder if the piano was played by George Martin? - seems a bit technically difficult given Paul's musical background. 3 years earlier George Martin wrote & played piano solo for John's 'In My Life'. In any case, it is a beautiful composition!

Lennon was a genius.
We have much more than geniality here... maybe we should create other words to describe Him and end Their music...
I didn't no it was bout a dog of his however another short gem of fab4luv it!
Its the perfect titeltrack for a Movie! Wonder why that Happens until today??
❤❤❤❤❤
ringo was also there i believe
Nada que no hallamos escuchado!
Thanks for sharing! So unexpected to learn that Ringo and John were not involved. Is this version a re-mix? Left channel brass and bass sound more dominant than versions I have. Who played the classic but simple drum line?
The pictures confirmed that George played those nice guitar parts.
It´s only Paul playing all instruments, except orchestra.
Oh, my Martha. sob
👍👌🙏
Surely there’s not many 17 year olds that know this song😜
Turning 16 in a month 😉 this has been one of my favorite Beatles songs for at least 5 years
Am 21, was recently 17 and even by then I knew every song they ever did including solo work
im 14 😀
16 now 🤟
im 17. Its hard to find beatle fans my age :[
I wonder if the piano was played by George Martin? - seems a bit technically difficult given Paul's musical background. 3 years earlier George Martin wrote & played piano solo for John's 'In My Life'.
In any case, it is a beautiful composition!
Was Paul
@@nicolasrestovic8008 Yeah, dead right! I have since found this little piece that proves it.. ruclips.net/video/Mj6NKG_KWAk/видео.html
What a talented man Paul is!
It was Paul, Nicolas is correct. Also for the record, it was NOT about Paul's sheepdog "Martha", as it has been told many times. The inspiration ends with the name "Martha".
@@blindowlvideos5813 Of course it's about his dog. "Hold your hand out, you silly girl" is dog owner talk, getting the stuff to "shake hands".
There are always other inspirations and ideas in his head, but the song is more about Paul's dog than anything else.
Ringo is believed to have played drums on this track. Only John was absent.
George playing his Gibson....right??
yes, nicknamed Lucy.
Adding the cool rhythm rakes at just the right time. We see him there in the photos.
Hi
Music from God.
This should be Paul McCartney in the recording studio because he recorded everything.
❤️❤️❤️❤️👐🌈
The only soppy McCartney song that I love
🚲👍👋
Martha the talking dog ????
😂😂😂
The lyrics don't make sense considering it's about a dog
It's not about a dog. That's a myth.
One of first Faul’s best tracks
Bro this is legit the normal version. Lame
One of mccartneys forgotten masterpieces
Forgotten by whom?
@@BeatlesCentricUniverse well it’s not ever discussed as a major piece comparable to rigby, yesterday, let it be etc probably because of the ‘lightness’of it’s subject but for me it’s as playful, musically inventive and joyful as any of his best. It’s also pretty much ALL McCartney. The best arrangement on the white album. Very rarely discussed in its rightful place alongside his greatest.
@@Freidlon7 It's truly an astounding bit of McCartney creativity, isn't it?
