  • After my less than favorable review of the original Intrepid Camera, The Intrepid Camera Company was nice enough to put the latest version of their bargain 4x5 camera into my hands for a shot at redemption.
How does it stack up after some refinements? Very well, actually! Let's take a look...

Large format can be as humbling as it can be inspiring. Thanks for taking the time!

Hi Hans, this is my reviews of you: You are kind of honest guy, are not afraid of calling the negative of anything. You are also a half-empty-kind-of guy. I agreed with you on the review of the Intrepid 4x5 MkI, but agree with others that you had not used it. I have couple of Calumet C400 ($70 each) that are so perfect and easy to use, except for the weight. Finally, I think you need to get some classes from real professional photographers: Taking photos with the camera at the level you did is calling for shaking, instability, and hard on your back. Second, you need to learn to see with your inner eye (that is hard, that is the artistic part of photography), I saw opportunities for many shots in that field you went, and you ended up taking shots of minor subjects. I think you felt unpopular with your viewers after your negative review and tried to please them by changing your review. Your phots taken with the Intrepid do look crappy, your fault and probably a bit of the camera. After all, the camera is just a box. I have the MkII and I feel it is worth the US330 because of the light weight, but there are so many details I do not like, like the ground glass, the roughness of turning the glass from portrait to landscape and viceversa (my unit is too hard to turn, I need to try hard and the whole thing shakes and changes the focus. Max told me to put some grease and I did, but to no avail.). I just ordered the enlarger too. I think, I only buy these cameras to help promote LF photography. I had better cameras, but if I can support them, I will do it. It is my way to help keep photography alive, specially large format photography. Sorry, for the half-empty kind of comment, but it may just be a reflection of your comments. Peace and love. ;)

Now that was a much better, much fairer review.

Enjoyed the video and your review. I ran into similar issues when I got my camera. I decided to buy a Zone VI 8x10 that only weighs 25 pounds! My Manfrotto tripod is quivering when I mount it up. I'll be buying a Ries tripod soon. Also, any sight breeze seems to make these cameras like a sail. Keep up the great work and I'm looking to seeing where you go next! Thanks!

I've been looking to get into 8x10. the only thing stopping me is developing. I wonder if there is a Mod54 type solution for the larger format.

Ha! Don't tempt me. My wife may murder me in my sleep if I move up to 8x10!

Know what you mean, I sleep with one eye open! Also, if you check out Craig Sheaks videos, he is the one that put me onto developing in a Cibachrome drum and Uniroller. It's like a Jobo, but MUCH cheaper. I love it and it's very portable if you travel. Thanks!

Will soon be two years since the video was made. Any additional comments about durability or usage? Thanks.

Enjoyed this review! And was interested to see what your thoughts were compared to your previous review.
Watched the first one first and was a bit bummed out. That first review was good, I thought, but just today I had two different things come through my facebook feed that made me sit up and think about large format again. This camera and the new SP 445 daylight tank for 4 x 5 film. Haven't looked (yet) for reviews on that but am again, after this second take on the Intrepid, thinking that large format is going to be doable for me. Thanks!

rob biemer it's definitely a fun little camera! I doubt it would replace my Shen, but for the money you can't beat it.

The SHen Hao cameras look very good but my budget wouldn't go that far. So, I ordered an Intrepid. Soon-ish I will really know how bad my photography is! :) Can't wait.

No cable release? I don't shoot large format, so this is from complete ignorance, but it seems like that would help reduce camera shake, particularly for longer exposures. Great review, thank you for sharing. I'm not sure I'm ready to jump into large format, but this would probably be the camera I got if I did decide to go that route

Hi! I do use a cable release when I'm shooting at slower speeds, but usually it's fine without one. Once you get passed the intimidation it's a really fun format, but it's not for everyone. Good luck!

Really thinking seriously about buying one of these cameras. I have two 4x5 cameras but they are to ungainly to be hiking with.
