    After this defeat Carolus Rex fled to Bender (Moldova) to seek refuge with the Ottomans. He stayed there for a long time trying to get the Ottomans to help him against Russia. Afer a while they got tired of him and attacked him and his Royal Guards in an event called "Kalabaliken i Bendel". Sabaton showcase this in the single "Royal Guards/Livgardet".

      Bender, not Bendel. The skirmish at Bender.

      it is only in the English version where that is depicted not in the Swedish version (livgardet)

    Take Royal guard and Livgardet. Its about the " kallabaliken i Bender".

      I second this. If he hasn't recorded Long Live the King yet, he could watch The Royal Guard/Livgardet about The Skirmish at Bender first. It may be a commemorative song, but it fits in well between Poltava and Long Live the King, even though it's not from the Carolus Rex album. I'm sure it would be nice with something uplifting to react to after Poltava.
      Edit: At least the music video for The Royal Guard. The English version depicts the battle.

    Your instinct about who was saying the threats were spot on!
    I think the history video will be extra interesting this time.
    Edit: 18:47 Yeah, Abba is definitely pronounced as a single word. It is however an acronym for the members of the main band: Agnetha Björn, Benny, Anne-Frid (Frida)

    Yeah, this is basically the turning point for the Swedes. Carolus' army was deep in enemy territory, with dwindling supplies due to the Russians' scorched earth tactics. Their plan was to pull off a sneak attack and take the fort of Poltava, whose food stores could alleviate the dire food situation. It was basically do or die.
    Carolus had been wounded in an earlier skirmish, so his marshall Rehnskiöld had the command. They tried to surprise the Russians, but were spotted early. They attempted a desperate charge against a well-fortified enemy, which ended in absolute disaster, with most of the elite Caroleans dead on the field and Carolus fleeing with a small force.

    It is the last battle beacuse almost al died. There was battles after but with almost al new men and Poltava is the end of great nordic war. Not the last battle of Karl XII ( Carolus Rex).

  • @Ethilien
    @Ethilien 2 года назад +4

    They're not saying it's Carolus Rex last battle but the Caroleans last battle; that is, the elite soldiers of the Swedish Empire were basically decimated in this battle. After this, the troops were pretty much new conscripts, and a new elite force didn't have time to come into being before Carolus dies and the Swedish Empire practically ends.

    Probably, Sweden might have been able to win the battle in Poltava. The Swedes broke through defenses 1, 2 and the third brought it to a halt. Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupt was in command of the infantry which was fully intact but chose to retreat and the man never forgave him for that decision.
    The idea was therefore to make a surprise attack, which also failed. Why? Well, basically because all the troops had not yet arrived at dawn and the Swedish army was eventually discovered. Probably the Swedes could have won the battle if the surprise attack had been successful (who knows??). Either way, it was a defeat.
    What Peter Englund has further pointed out is that the catastrophic loss of life at the Battle of Poltava was so great that even on the Western Front during the First World War (at its worst) the losses were not so great

    • @Clouded_Reactions
      @Clouded_Reactions  2 года назад

      I wonder how much different things would have turned if Sweden succeeded in their battle at Poltava. The soldiers were still restless, and the win might of encouraged Carolus to do even MORE (if even possible). If it was by one of his own that his life ended, it most likely still would have happened :/

    Our great defeat, and last great battle. From this point on, Sweden is in retreat.
    We faced Peter the Great of Russia's scorched earth durring the whole campain. A tactic that future invader will face as well.

    After you have listened to all the songs I highly recommend for you to react to the Kings and Generals series about the Great Northern War. The series shows the tactics used in battles fought by King Charles and his Caroleans.

    The king was hurt in the leg and he could not follow the men out in the battle and they leaved almost al canons in the camp. Almost al swedish soldiers died that day. Some captured and end up in prison camp in Russia other hide with the King in Turkey and after some year some got home. I heard that around 2000-4000 finally got home. I dont know the actual numbers. But it is our worst lost, that battle.

    Not his last battle. It's referring to the caroleans, who suffered a catastrophic defeat. The translation makes a slight mistake as they translate krigare to warrior when it's in this case supposed to be warriors.

      This is probably the 4th time a video had some wrong translations. You’d think avoiding RUclips captions and instead watching videos with subtitles created by the channel would have a more accurate translation :/

      @@Clouded_Reactions first to clarify everything after Ruina Imperii are bonus tracks, the "story" ends with Ruina Imperi. "Twilight of the Thundergod" is a song about Thor fighting the World serpent during Ragarok its a Amon amarth cover on the limited edition and platinum edition, there is also "in the army now" which is a Bolland & Bolland cover, and I think two other bonus tracks that were only on the limited and platinum editions.

      @@Clouded_Reactions i had forgotten about the other bonus tracks besides "Twilight of the Thundergod" but yeah the next two songs that are actually about Sweden itself is "Long live the king" and "Ruina Imperii". now that I think about it I'm not entirely sure if they are both the same song or not but I do know "Ruina Imperi" is the last song that's actually about sweden.

    Sweden attacked the Russians in this battle. Karl XII was wounded in the battle. I believe the battleplan was to circumvent the redoubts but in the absence of Karl XII the commanders that took over chose to try to take them which lead to caroleans getting bogged down in useless fighting loosing a lot of men. Swedish cavalry almost managed to turn the tide by trying to drive a bunch of Russians into a ravine. We lost this battle by an inch and that inch was disastrous from a Swedish point of view. In the end though Sweden didn´t have enough of a population to replenish our ranks. A carolean could kill 10 Russians but it would not matter. Russia could always throw more people into the meat grinder and win the war of attrition.
