I felt really nervous going to my first Legion Skirmish tournament and by being open and honest that it was my first one and I was new they paired me with a veteran and he was so nice to play against and it was a close game. He helped me through all the tough parts I struggled with but didn't try to play the game for me. Biggest advice is to just get out of your comfort zone and try something new.

Hey, an American flag! Hello from the States!
I remember my first game at 15 years old at my local store. Everyone was super friendly! They even stood by and gave advice. I'm getting back into the game after 15+ years so I'll have to go through the growing pains again, but the community overall is very supportive. Just don't say you "know" the game if you have any doubts. Be humble and everything will be ok. Just be honest, and everything will be smooth.

I'm going to try to go to my local Games Workshop store to try Kill Team this Saturday. I want to paint mostly but enjoying the game would be a huge plus for me. Also would be nice to meet people. All of my friends are through discord or twitter lol

This reminds me of the time I watched the Warhammer 40k factions video by Bricky roughly 3 years ago. I still kept on watching it to this day, outdated as it were 'cause it's fun and inspirational...! T~T
Anyways, back on topic. I was originally going to start playing Warhammer 40k last December after saving up so much. But then, during last November, the store owner one day gave me a bunch of free models (which happened to be both Necrons and Space Marines, btw) and asked me which faction I want to start with. I was kinda torn since I liked both factions..... At that same time, I was speaking with a fellow group players who play Warhammer 40k at the store, and one of 'em wanted to play Necrons, while the other offered to add a few more Space Marine units in addition to the free stuff I was going to get if I should pick up the faction.
So, after deliberating myself (nervously hard, I might add) for over an hour or so (while playing a quick game of MtG Commander and helping out a fellow player constructing a deck while I'm at it), I decided to pick up the Space Marines, took the deal, and never looked back....
Later that day, I even got to play with 'em in my very first game of Kill Team (since I got a squad of 6 marines ready). I was so incredibly nervous that my hands are literally shaking! But I eventually calmed myself down and, even though I was losing, kept on laughing like mad - especially since the last marine I had left was still alive for the next 3 turns! xD
It feels like I'm playing 5 years' worth of D&D sessions in one night - and I'm still pumped to go! I'll never forget those near-indescribable feelings I've had that day. It was... incredible, to say the least.... ^~^
Over the course of December (which happened to be my birthday month, btw), I immediately embarked on building as many Space Marine units as possible and, with the help of the Warhammer 40k playgroup that I've mentioned earlier, decided to pick up painting as well (something that I haven't done in years ever since I was a kid). Progress IS slow, but fun, I might add! Not to mention that my playgroup is one of the friendliest I've ever came across! One of 'em even helped me acquire a Space Marine model that I wanted the most!
Now, I'm on the verge of finishing up my very first army and I am currently considering which faction I should go first as my second army to collect. I should count myself lucky, all things considered.... T~T
Oh, yes! If you're all wondering, I made a custom Space Marine faction. They call themselves... "The Knights of Skyfang."
I hope that your Warhammer 40k journey will be as smooth and inspirational as mine, guys. :)

I've just started collecting an army of primaris ultramarines and looking forward to going to my first game. I would like to starting collecting chaos space marines, Necrons or adepta sororitas but can't decide witch army to start next 😊.

Nice one, have fun at your first game. Joining a gaming group totally changed the hobby for me, it's loads of fun. I can recommend Chaos Space Marines, the new codex is fantastic, and it's fun to play something with a more sinister twist after the stoic Ultramarines.

Most game stores have a shill that they pay to lose games to the new guy/gal. So you get hooked and come back and spend your whole paycheck on little plastic models and wind up having to eat nothing but ramen noodles for a whole month. 😈
