I've been watching your videos for a while now and I wanted to say thank you, I saw a documentary of yours on slasher films that came out a bit after Scream 3 and used that as a source for a final essay in one of my college classes and got an A on it and watching your discussions and editorials on films like the 1970s Wicker Man and Don't Look Now have also given me a deeper respect and knowledge of atmosphere and editing in horror films which has helped me with editing my own short films as well as them now being some of my favorite horror films. I also want to thank you for introducing me to great lesser known UK films like 71 and Good Vibrations which haven't gotten the love they deserve over here in the states. All in all i hope it doesn't seem like I'm kissing yall's butts too much or anything but yall's videos have been very important to me and I always look forward to the next one. Thank you again and happy holidays
My list (based on U.S. release dates): 10 - Maps to the Stars 9 - Spy 8 - Mistress America 7 - Room 6 - Trainwreck 5 - Shaun the Sheep Movie 4 - The Diary of a Teenage Girl 3 - Me and Earl and the Dying Girl 2 - Kingsman: The Secret Service 1 - Ex Machina
Top Ten Films of the Year- But I would only say 7 of which are films which I loved, I haven't really seen enough movies from this year. 1. Birdman 2. Star Wars - The Force Awakens 3. Whiplash 4. Song of The Sea 5. Me and Earl and The Dying Girl 6. Inside Out 7. Mad Max - Fury Road 8. What We Do In The Shadows 9. The Martian 10. Kingsman
The clip of Domhnall Gleeson in Brooklyn, got me thinking....'Have I actually ever seen him in a bad film?' so I checked out his IMdb searching for the inevitable turkey: Here is his feature filmography from the last 5 years - The Revenant Star Wars: TFA Brooklyn Ex Machina Unbroken Calvary Frank About Time Anna Karenina Dredd Shadow Dancer Harry Potter DH2 True Grit Never Let Me Go Well, I'll be. That guy sure can pick'em.
Here are Mark Kermode's top-5 of 2015 (which he published on Guardian) : 1. Inside Out 2.A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night 3.Girlhood 4.Carol 5.The Falling (the stinker of 2015)
+watchwatchlalala I like Ex Machina, but I am not sure it's will be on my top 10 list. Inside out , Mad max, Room, Sicario,Youth,Spotlight, The Assassin,The end of tour,(Carol, Brooklyn)
+jay Zhang Oh I will gladly swap Carol for Ex Machina. I know I shouldn't but I absolutely hated it. Really didn't think I would. I'm aware that I am guilty in wanting a different outcome than the one we were given but that doesn't explain the absolute itchy feet I felt 20 mins from the start. Much preferred Brooklyn.
+Nautilus1972 Oh definitely Whiplash is up there too. My hearing is a bit bad so find watching animation a little hard in cinemas but did manage Princess Kaguya and agree with you, it's lovely. Birdman, although a great representation of theatre behind the scenes, it just didn't work for me. It's kind of like Carol in that I love the look, actors, story, performances etc at the end of the day I just didn't enjoy. it. How does that even happen????
+watchwatchlalala Ex Machina was number 9 on his list for the first half of this year, so it may have just not made his final 10. But I agree Ex Machina was excellent.
I love these lists as it showcases lots films that not many of us have heard of or wouldn't get much notice/recognition they deserve. However, I'd love to see a generic/blockbuster Top 10 Best/Worst from Kermode also!! Please!!!!
If your list wouldnt have long been published on the guardian I would have really been excited about this video... Heres what I've seen so far that's worth mentioning (not counting "last years" award contenders (awarded earlier this year)): 1. Inside out Witty, clever and full of emotion - especially Joy. For me right at the top of Pixars whole catalogue. 2. The Tribe Radical new take on narration and sound. Disturbing but exciting. 3. The Look of Silence Harrowing follow up to "The act of killing". Important filmmaking. 4. Slow West surprisingly funny western - really enjoyed it! 5. Montage of heck Liked how it recontextualizes its elements rather than just making it an ordinary documentary. very disturbing, too. 6. 45 Years reminded me of Mike Leighs works... very understated but gripping 7. Victoria the cinematic stunt of the year. shot in a single take, a real single take. Still desperately waiting for (among others): Son of Saul, green room, anomalisa, hail ceasar, hateful 8, room and the revenant :)
***** Have you seen Akira, Grave of The Fireflies, Waltz with Bashir, Ghost in the Shell, Angels Egg, It’s Such a Beautiful Day or Perfect Blue, all of these are brilliant, mature, beautiful, and all films.
***** You're limiting yourself to some of greatest films of all time, films that took years of labor to imagine and create fir us to enjoy and ponder on. Give me one argument as to why they are not films.
+koopification I saw Song of the Sea on a plane after being interested in it for a while, was not prepared to tear up in front of strangers. I assumed it would be good, but had no idea that it would be probably one of the most touching and beautiful films I've ever seen. It's unfortunate that virtually no one here in the US has seen it.
the girl in song of the sea is called Saoirse and the actress in Brooklyn is called Saoirse, are there any other films in Marks list with this connection?
my top 10: 1. sicario 2. the force awakens 3. fury road 4. inside out 5. bridge of spies 6. spotlight 7. mommy 8. tangerine 9. brooklyn 10. beasts of no nation
I've had Princess Kaguya downloaded for so long now, I need to get around to it but man does it seem so far and away from the usual type of tone I enjoy in movies. Song of the Sea looks great though, love the art style. Need to check it out now.
+thePANDEMlC The films aren't all that different in some ways, particularly in message and theme. They're also both steeped in the character and folklore of their respective countries, with unique and gorgeous animation. I think I preferred Princess Kaguya, but they were both excellent and would both make my Top 10 list for the year. Along with Inside Out which was my third favourite animated release of the year. I don't agree with all of Kermode's non-animated choices, but we seem to have similiar taste in animated films.
i'm guessing anomalisa is the third animated feature in his list. does "released in UK cinemas in 2015" also include for instance films shown at london film festival?
Why does everyone apologize for the "stupid" idea of ranked lists. It's highly interesting to see a best films of the year list by someone who has seen so many films, imo.
My top 10 of 2015 1 Rams (Hrútar) 2 Gluckauf 3 A girl walks home alone at night 4 song of the sea 5 Er ist wieder da 6 Ex Machina 7 Kamisama no iu tori 8 Straight out a compton 9 Fúsi 10 Kingsman the secret service
+1Kilili The general release version is almost three hours long and the director's cut is over three hours so I wouldn't bet on that. I do expect it to be really good fun though.
As much as I enjoy watching the Good Doctor list his favourite films of the year I prefer watching him talk about his worst films of the year. Perverse?
You people who praise Ex Machina have never read a single science fiction book, a single science book, or taken a single philosophy class. Just stop. Just stop.
+Mrsbeatle1968 Personality-driven and personality-dominated cinema is pretty shabby and disgraceful. Look at the morons who try to persuade you that Coen Brothers movies are delightful. No wonder television is increasingly considered intellectually and aesthetically superior to film.
+Liam Gillespie Why would he produce a list that he doesn't agree with? What purpose could that possibly serve? If his list was full of big money blockbusters I could understand the accusation that he'd sold out to the big studios but why would you fake such an odd, personal list of favourites? I don't get it.
+ohthepeppers Having been a Scottish schoolboy I had that f**kin book rammed down my throat.I got shivers at the idea of having to watch in movie form now !
Meh. Some of these are alright for a fun night. I think it's scandalous though that he didn't even mention "L' uomo e il cane malato", "Mahmud Sim Israel", "Bellis Perennis", "The Woman who loved Milk" or the unforgetable: "La nuit la machine à laver à cessé de laver". Deep stuff. Oh I almost forgot P. Snugglehousers "The night Alfonse le cinéaste realized watching shit movies only impresses idiots". ;)
+SuperDashRendar That's very unlikely considering that Kermode actually kinda liked it (despite his bizarre usual hatred of all modern US comedies) Also it's a pretty solidly entertaining film released in a year with some absolute horrorshows (Pixels/Entourage/Fantastic 4/Human Centipede 3/The Gallows/Terminator Genisys etc)
Brooklyn is rubbish. Saoirse Ronan is handed a completely uninteresting, uncharismatic character with no personality whatsoever, and the Irish postcard-level clichés were borderline offensive. Sentimental nonsense.
Nice to see a list of films none of which I've seen. I need to check out Brooklyn.
+FunWithGuru Never knew you were a Kermode fan nice to see you here.
+Jaime Carlander Have been for years. My favourite critic.
Anomalisa
My list (based on U.S. release dates):
10 - Maps to the Stars
9 - Spy
8 - Mistress America
7 - Room
6 - Trainwreck
5 - Shaun the Sheep Movie
4 - The Diary of a Teenage Girl
3 - Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
2 - Kingsman: The Secret Service
1 - Ex Machina
Song Of The Sea is just wonderful. So glad it made your list.
He calls it Kermode Uncut and then cuts the video into two parts. wtf
Had never even heard of half of these!
aww song of the sea is a beautiful film
+MrCyclesafe Absolutely, I've also watched it 3 times this year and wouldn't mind another viewing!
in my top 10 aswell
+MrCyclesafe Very beautiful. It was my pick to win the Oscar.
***** ? you trolling?
Very happy to see Song of the Sea making the list, it's an undeniably wonderful film.
Sicario, Mad Max and inside out are the only films ive seen this year that have lived up to the hype.
Top Ten Films of the Year- But I would only say 7 of which are films which I loved, I haven't really seen enough movies from this year.
1. Birdman
2. Star Wars - The Force Awakens
3. Whiplash
4. Song of The Sea
5. Me and Earl and The Dying Girl
6. Inside Out
7. Mad Max - Fury Road
8. What We Do In The Shadows
9. The Martian
10. Kingsman
+Harry Smith Just a quick thing, whiplash came out in 2014. That's all, have a nice day!
Brandon Conway It came out Jan 2015 in the UK..
Yes Brooklyn & The Song of the Sea were great!
The clip of Domhnall Gleeson in Brooklyn, got me thinking....'Have I actually ever seen him in a bad film?' so I checked out his IMdb searching for the inevitable turkey:
Here is his feature filmography from the last 5 years -
The Revenant
Star Wars: TFA
Brooklyn
Ex Machina
Unbroken
Calvary
Frank
About Time
Anna Karenina
Dredd
Shadow Dancer
Harry Potter DH2
True Grit
Never Let Me Go
Well, I'll be. That guy sure can pick'em.
True Grit: terrible. Ex Machina: ignorant. About Time: vomit-demanding glurge.
pricklyphlox True Grit is a masterpiece and you are deeply unworthy :-P
I'd rag on TFA out of all those.
I love Kermode's unabashed love of quiet, understated films. A lotta critics are kinda scared to embrace that I think.
I watched Song of the Sea on Amazon Prime here in the US. Amazing animation.
Here are Mark Kermode's top-5 of 2015 (which he published on Guardian) :
1. Inside Out
2.A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
3.Girlhood
4.Carol
5.The Falling (the stinker of 2015)
Ex Machina surely needs to feature somewhere. Only me?
+watchwatchlalala I like Ex Machina, but I am not sure it's will be on my top 10 list. Inside out , Mad max, Room, Sicario,Youth,Spotlight, The Assassin,The end of tour,(Carol, Brooklyn)

I'm hoping it's in his Top 5. So happy it won 4 awards with BFI. I'll settle for that.. possibly :)
+Nautilus1972 Oh definitely Whiplash is up there too. My hearing is a bit bad so find watching animation a little hard in cinemas but did manage Princess Kaguya and agree with you, it's lovely. So Saoirse Ronan hasn't put a foot wrong? What about The Host?
+The Vicious Chicken of Bristol Oh god, I forgot about that.
oldskool4572 she was terrible in The Host
+Alextromagnetic she really was
Good selection for sure
Omg when he said 2 other animated films I was like yup, Anomalisa and Inside Out -- but what a surprise to know Song Of The Sea topped em
Wilko Johnson is the guy who played the executioner Ilyn Payne in Game of Thrones. I'm so glad he got better
I like that you had to justify and assure us Brooklyn has more universal appeal than merely half the population of the entire world
Making a best films of 2015 list before 2015 is over.
Top 10 list of best 2015 films=ALL THE ONES NO ONE EVER HEARD OF :-)
Song of the Sea should be no. 1! Great film.
***** Of course it's a film. What are you talking about? A film is anything that creates the illusion of movement.
+Dave Long How?
***** Have you seen Akira, Grave of The Fireflies, Waltz with Bashir, Ghost in the Shell, Angels Egg, It’s Such a Beautiful Day or Perfect Blue, all of these are brilliant, mature, beautiful, and all films.

Completely agree about the animation
Julien Temple also directed a few early Depeche Mode videos.
the girl in song of the sea is called Saoirse and the actress in Brooklyn is called Saoirse, are there any other films in Marks list with this connection?
my top 10:
1. sicario
2. the force awakens
3. fury road
4. inside out
5. bridge of spies
6. spotlight
7. mommy
8. tangerine
9. brooklyn
10. beasts of no nation
Sunset Song is a 2016 film for us Canadians.
Sicario. Best film this year. Hands down.
This year's Bakemono no ko (The Boy and the Beast) was a really good animated movie by Hosoda Mamoru. Don't know when it is going to the UK, though.
Hi-ho, this is Kermode the Frog!
This list makes one realize how few good films were out this year.
I hope the third animated film on your list is Minions
Nice to see Mark truly embracing Star Wars by dressing up as Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi.
I've had Princess Kaguya downloaded for so long now, I need to get around to it but man does it seem so far and away from the usual type of tone I enjoy in movies. Song of the Sea looks great though, love the art style. Need to check it out now.

ugh

My top 10 of 2015
1 Rams (Hrútar)
2 Gluckauf
3 A girl walks home alone at night
4 song of the sea
5 Er ist wieder da
6 Ex Machina
7 Kamisama no iu tori
8 Straight out a compton
9 Fúsi
10 Kingsman the secret service
Surprised that u didn't include *Bridge of Spies* Mr Kermode.. - @acharich
opening credits look very Wes Anderson-esque :)
I hope The Gift is mentioned.
6. The Peanuts Movie
7. Kingsman: The Secret Service
8. Mission: Impossible-Rouge Nation
9. Southpaw
10. Trainwreck
Kermode still pronounces Kaguya as 'Kagoiya.'
the O'Scars
Wow! I'm so lame, haven't heard of a single one of these films. Might check out the animated ones though.
Where's your review of "The H8ful Eight", Doctor?
+1Kilili It's not released in cinema's in the UK till January, but it's hot to be Tarrintino's best
Ah I see. I expect it to be more concise and less ill-disciplined than Django. I wonder if MK will like it :)
+1Kilili The general release version is almost three hours long and the director's cut is over three hours so I wouldn't bet on that. I do expect it to be really good fun though.
part 2?
R. Ringshifter GFY now!
when do we get 5-1?!
Nice to see Irish represented
I hope the third animated film will be The Peanuts Movie.
Never seen or heard of any of these films. 😂
As much as I enjoy watching the Good Doctor list his favourite films of the year I prefer watching him talk about his worst films of the year. Perverse?
1)The Revenant
2)Anomalisa
3)Creed
4)Star Wars The Force Awakens
5)Ex Machina
6)Spotlight
7)Sicario
8)Bridge of Spies
9)The Hateful Eight
10)The Martian
Ya fecker, uplood part two.
i wish all those books were straight, maybe thats my ocd
i think as a reviewer kermode focuses too much on how broad a movies appeal is rather than the artistry behind it
You people who praise Ex Machina have never read a single science fiction book, a single science book, or taken a single philosophy class. Just stop. Just stop.
It's a flawed but interesting film not sure reading sci fi books are a prerequisite for enjoying/understanding a fictional film.
+Mrsbeatle1968 Personality-driven and personality-dominated cinema is pretty shabby and disgraceful. Look at the morons who try to persuade you that Coen Brothers movies are delightful. No wonder television is increasingly considered intellectually and aesthetically superior to film.
I don't believe these lists are what Kermode really believes to be honest
Why not?
+Liam Gillespie Why would he produce a list that he doesn't agree with? What purpose could that possibly serve?
If his list was full of big money blockbusters I could understand the accusation that he'd sold out to the big studios but why would you fake such an odd, personal list of favourites? I don't get it.
Come on, Sunset Song shouldn't be in _anyone's_ top ten - for Agyness Deyn's downright _ABYSMAL_ Scottish accent _alone._
+ohthepeppers Agyness Deyn isn't she a model?
Vanessa F then what the hell is she doing being an actress?
Vanessa F :O What??? that is her???
Vanessa F oh god!!!!
+ohthepeppers Having been a Scottish schoolboy I had that f**kin book rammed down my throat.I got shivers at the idea of having to watch in movie form now !
I just didn't think Brooklyn was that great
Meh. Some of these are alright for a fun night. Worst Number 1 - Sisters!!! O please, let it be so!
+SuperDashRendar That's very unlikely considering that Kermode actually kinda liked it (despite his bizarre usual hatred of all modern US comedies)
Also it's a pretty solidly entertaining film released in a year with some absolute horrorshows (Pixels/Entourage/Fantastic 4/Human Centipede 3/The Gallows/Terminator Genisys etc)
Did Kermode review fantastic 4 or a written review? All i see is the imposter review team doing it. I wanna see him tear that apart. lol
Anomalisa is not on this list
+walter white Hasn't been released in the UK yet.
Inside Out is not good at all. One curse word at 11? Simplifying puberty? Realistic only for middle class parents living in Hampstead.
a lot of Irish...not that there is anything wrong with that.
Oh, the Scottish accent was atrocious. 9/10 for effort though.
Brooklyn is rubbish. Saoirse Ronan is handed a completely uninteresting, uncharismatic character with no personality whatsoever, and the Irish postcard-level clichés were borderline offensive. Sentimental nonsense.
Dreadful propaganda, Mark! Last time I bother with any of your videos.
