That's exactly how i learned was from my grandpa Earl. He was a master mechanic for Caterpillar and into working on dozers and my dad, both men absolutely loved teaching me because of my eagerness, discipline, and the overall ability to learn and figure things out myself. Not enough of the younger generations who want to put any faith into us ol farts and trust that we know what we're talking about when we tell them to do something, especially if its a tried and proven method! The intake-heater element is what is screwed into the intake. Disconnect it as it won't help you unless it's extremely cold and you can use the extra amps for cranking. You might as well try 24 volts cranking it. Just disconnect the alternator. I did notice one BIG thing that might keep you from cranking it. The manual stop was pulled all the way out. Those Injection pumps have a metering valve in them that sticks when set up for a long time especially when held in the shut-off position. I would take the injection pump cover off and manually move the linkage back and forth underneath the little cam that shuts it off. Don't worry about air in it as that is all going back to the tank. The Stanadyne injection pump {Roosa Master} will put out just a tic more fuel if you hold it in the wide open position. Do all this and maybe it will fire off.

A small diameter chunk of pvc on that pump will give a straight shot to the bottom of the oil pan. The rubber line on your pump curls up in the pan so the open end isnt in the oil/water. Hook the rubber pump hose to the solid tube and pump away

Don't feel bad Wiley I've got the very same fluid transfer pump and tried it 4 or 5 times and found out later the suction was the top hole on the pump. I'm like you I gave up on it and ended up taking it to shop and 1400.00 later might could have saved my money if I had have read the directions on the pump I was using it backwards the top hole up to pump handle is suction. Days later I put it together that way and filled the kitchen sink and pumped the water out of the sink over to the other bowl of the sink and it worked flawlessly so my bad putting the hoses in the pump upside down could have saved having to send it to get the DEF tank took off and emptied and cleaned the tank for 1379.00. I felt stupid over that pump.

45:54 Intake air pre-heater. Cold start aid, warms the incoming air up to a couple hundred degrees when active. Same effect as holding a propane torch flame above the intake.
I would highly recommend against using ether in this engine with that thing active because it's a good way to detonate the ether in the intake manifold. I don't think it's active with you using a screwdriver to jump the starter solenoid directly, but still, that thing is basically just a space heater built into the intake manifold.

Just a little information on the injection pump. That is a CAV or a Roosa master pump when the engine is shutdown by pulling the cable. It closes the metering valve and when you push the cable back in the metering valve with go to full throttle. When the engine starts the governor will take control of the metering valve. If that 450 was left sitting with the cable pulled the metering can get stuck in the closed position preventing the engine from starting. I have a Case backhoe that the metering valve stuck in the closed position after I started it and shut it down. Now Hank would like this I tapped on the injection pump with a crescent wrench and I was able to restart the engine. I added essential lube to the diesel and let it run now I have no problems with the injection pump.

@@DontbeWily think I agree with Bill about the pump (if it's a CAV couldn't really see it in the vid so can't be sure) if it's got a rectangular top where the cables go on to, take it off (carefully so as not to lose any nuts & washers and also not to damage the gaskets as it all has to seal if it's going to run) you should find a spring connected to an arm with a pin with a spiral groove (fuelling pin), going into a bore (there's also a sliding plate that is the fuel cut mechanism) where the pin can get stuck/gummed in the bottom of the bore so fuel is cut off, lift it out clean it with solvent and the bore as well, should work then, regarding the inlet manifold yes that is a pre-heater (hot wire coil) and finally your problem with the starter looks like the contacts are dirty/corroded (get this on engines i'm getting going after being left a long time) on the starter solenoid, some you can strip and clean but others you can't (no need for a complete starter motor just get a new solenoid), problem with "bridging" the starter is it tends to cause arcing on the solenoid contacts messing them up, also just check the "grounds" on your battery and engine (a cheat is run a jump lead from the battery to the body of the starter motor as well) as a poor ground could be making the starter motor hot, hope this helps.

I was along when my boss at the time bought a new 450 with six way blade in early 1974, if that helps you any with vintage, at least we know they were being made then! There was also a 350 and a 550 on display at the time, at the dealers. I believe the engines were Perkins, as they were with the backhoes. He also had a 580B CK in those days, which was a real work horse, not as refined as later versions, but pretty easily learned.

It is a Case 188d. The d is for diesel. The exhaust manifold is in fact original because these engines were also put in several tractors. I bought one out of a 530 Case tricycle tractor and put in mine. The lower outlet on the manifold was for an orchard tractor option. Exhausted out the bottom so trees don't kill your muffler. If you decide to part it out, I need a radiator. I just ran a tree through mine last night because it doesn't have the really nice side engine covers like yours.

Hey Wiley, I tried one of those silly red suction pumps like that one time and wound up keeping the hose and flinging the crappy pump.
A Suggestion; I have two of the generic suction pumps that are identical to the MityVac pumps that I bought from off of eBay and love both of them.
I had a carburetor float stick open on my Cub Cadet that had a two cylinder opposed twin engine in which my engine was completely full of gasoline. I maneuvered the smallest plastic tube down the dipstick tube and suctioned out roughly 3.5 quarts of oil/gas mix. The two suction canisters that I have will hold pretty close to 7.5 quarts per canister In which when full they are very easy to empty out.
As I remember, both of them were around $40 per canister and had 4 different sizes of plastic tubing with a rubber boot on one end. They really don’t take up much space being that they are more tall than round. I was very skeptical when I first bought the two that I have and was pretty quickly impressed.
I wonder if the fuel filters may be full of water-May be worth checking out.

Im no diesel mech. But seems to me you cant use ether if you have glo plug in intake cause it will cause an explosion in the intake manifold...? Maybe unplug that wire and she might go past that to a compression ignition... not sure..

Come on Wiley what`s with the timing of this video? I just viewed Hanks continuing saga on the skidder with the engine full of water. But I believe that is a 450. The 450 B and later had square corners on the hood. Now let`s see if it has a Case or a Cummins engine as this video continues. If it has a Cummins it will be a 450 C. As always I might be wrong thank you for another nice video. Now after seeing the engine that looks like a Case 207 and that is a stock exhaust manifold. I have the same exhaust manifold on a Case 580 B backhoe with a Case 188 engine

I like the content and your insights. Look at diesel creek’s style to see what he publishes in 45 minutes. I’d have been happier if this were 20-25 minutes. Keep them coming. You’ll work into your style. It’s still early.
