thank you Brotha Larry Cameo was definitely a different band. yall gave Us so many classics. Funk Funk, I remember dancing to Shake Your Pants, yall smoothed it out with Sparkle. dropped knowledge with Secrets of Time. I can go on and on… great bass player, great drummer (you), guitar player, horn section, vocals, songwriting. Man! yall had (have) it all. Congratulations on all your success and thank you so much for your dedication to your craft and your musical excellence. like Earth Wind and Fire, Parliament Funkadelic, Isley Brothers and others, yall gave Us what We needed to triumph over this hostile environment. yall fed Our souls and lifted Our spirits despite the unacceptable conditions. yall let them and Us know who We really are through your brilliant creativity and musical excellence and it is very much appreciated. at least that’s how I feel. peace and love my good Brotha Larry Blackmon. peace to that great band called Cameo. I was a young E/4 stationed at Ft. Lewis WA. at the Embassy Suites hotel in Bremerton and in walks Cameo during the Word Up tour. The women flocked around them like you would not believe and I walked up to Larry and said “You alright Larry” he extended his had and said “Thank you boss, you alright too” in true OG fashion. I’ll never forget that moment 😂👍🏾💯
I think I was still a PFC at the time, down the coast at Ft Ord, CA when I first heard it. It always got everyone going at the E Club. They've shut fort Ord down but the 7th ID ended up moving up to Ft. Lewis... Doesn't matter though, we got to be young soldiers during the 80's on the West Coast! Hard to toP THAT! 😉
One of my favorite songs of all time !!!!! I love everything about it!!!! I remember hanging out , outside a black night club and being blown away by "Word up " ! Me and a friend had to meet someone in the parking lot , and we ended up staying there , drinking and hearing Word up two or three times and also "Candy" ! Two of my favorite songs that never get old !!!!!!thank you Cameo ! You guys are Legends !!!!!!!✌️
37 years ! 😮 I wore that cassette album out back then ! Most artists sampled that unique clap sound in their productions. I bought a drum machine (Boss DR 550 mkII) specifically for that clap sound , that's how monumental that song was and still is. Word Up needs a remastered release larry.
Congrats L.B. on "Word Up" the song the album and videos from that album... I've been a fan ever since I heard "Funk Funk" on the radio here in Chi Town...again congrats on the success of Cameosis / Next Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Funk Funk & Rigamortis had this -then kid shook! Saw them open up for the Ojays (mom's group) As much as I dig Prince & El Debarge, Wayne Cooper's falsetto? OMG! live sound like the record!
Man!!! Cameo. Larry, the fun you & the guys brought to music in the 80s is a part of my life & will never leave me. The fun was one thing but the quality was something else. Single Life (I was doing that dance you did on Top Of The Pops the other day) Attack Me With Your Love (That tune flows like a waterfall & covers you with all kinds of feel good) Candy (YES I DO, Simply put...I still imitate your voice when I sing it to this day) Word Up (Dubba U__O_R_D____UP, Nuff Said ;-) I can't name all the other stuff here because there's too many to mention but maaaan your music was a moment in time that will stand the test of time. Always. Thank you guys so much & I'm very grateful 🎶🕺🏽☁😶🌫⛅🌤🌞😃😎👍🏽
I met Larry at a gas station in Atlanta a few years ago. He told me to pick up the In The Face Of Funk CD which was Cameo's latest CD. I did and it's been constantly playing.. An Awesome underappreciated influence in the music industry.I remember all of the talk in town when LaFace records opened here. And I would always say before LaFace there was Atlanta Artists Records.. LA and Baby Face weren't first. There was Larry Blackmon and Cameo before them.. Thank you Brother
A top song from Cameo for me and that's saying a lot considering their roster of hits. I Just Want to Be, Shake Your Pants, Why have I lost You, Talkin/Side of Neck, Just Be Yourself ( that base is so good) and the list goes on. One of my fav funk outfits
Real music by real musicians - PRN. Cameo was fkn awesome, thanks for all your great music. What a great era to be alive. We still enjoy your music guys.
I remember the first time i heard “ Word Up “ at the Air Force NCO club in 1986 at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage Alaska instant classic! The song is so transcendental it had everybody hitting the dance floor the minute the DJ played it. Thanks Larry for the great memories that came along with it!
Thank you so much for taking me back. I went and saw the entire video. It was the hit of the century and you Larry were everyone's favorite. You still have those same big beautiful eyes. You look good. I'm glad you're still around to talk about those golden days of funk. Absolutely amazing! CAMEO!!! I'll always remember.❤😊
There's NO WAY that Word Up will get old EVER-R-R!! I grew up dancing to it and I literally just watched it on Stingray Retro Canada. Great Great song!
Thank you so much for this it's hard to compare anything to what yiu guys have done your 1100%right still bangs in all the clubs all over the world again thank you 🎉🎉🎉❤❤
Man Larry we were right down front with y'all in Pittsburgh man, mostly, just about every record y'all made back then went platinum in the hood, going to the bar, the club and even making love to whatever woman you were dealing with at the time. Sigh...... Those were the days, anyway congratulations to you and the whole Cameo for bringing us real music from back in my day, good times, good fun.2 🫵🏾, 💪🏾✊🏾 and 🫶🏾. #CAMEOSIS
Interestingly, the first time I heard Word Up was on Infinity Train, and then when I heard it in someone's car, I was thinking "hey that song was on Infinity Train"
Absolutely, love this song. It takes me back to a special time and place in my youth. Thank you for this precious jewel and timeless classic! Now tell me What's the Word!!!????
Mr Larry Blackmon i have been a Cameo fan since 1979 when you all released the album "Secret Omen" 45 years ago (1979) releasing the funky single "I Just Want To Be". Fastforward when Word Up was released in 1986 my vivid memory of that song was when i was partying at Florentine Gardens nightclub in Hollywood, Ca in 1986 gettin my groove on. Cameo's music will live on forever. Love your music!. I play the catalog regularly. 7/22/2024
i was named after yall. my momma saw the video and was like thats what ima name my son. im call my son LJ(lectric slide jr) i love all the music. and really would like to network with you guys. i try everyday to live up to the legacy youve built. thank you for being the best musical group of all time. you have no idea how your music has molded me into the man i am today
Word up to you and CAMEO NATION. You and the band are the FORMALDEHYDE FUNK MEN !!! I caught two of you all concerts, one in Dallas, TX when the She's Strange album was released, and again in Austin, Tx when the Word Up album was released. I took my ex-wife to the Word Up concert and she was BLOWN AWAY by the energy you all showed. I had told her WAIT TILL YOU SEE THEM LIVE because I always cranked up your music and she would always tell me to turn it down some. After the concert, next day she had all of the CAMEO ALBUMS out playing and recording her own CAMEO TAPES. I had to tell her to turn it down b4 the neighbors get upset. lol (TRUE STORY) Man, Do I miss those days !!! Wishing you Better Days for your continued health recovery. WORD UP !!!
There was no mistaking Cameo for any other group. I am so grateful I was able to experience 80's music while hanging out with my friends in clubs from Hawaii to South Carolina. The 1980's were the pinnacle of R&B music, so many great songs. Many of which I rock daily.
Much love to you, brotha. I 100% heard word up and your other songs growing up in the 90s alot, and people danced to it so much when I worked security on fremont street over a decade ago. Even though you likely don't read the comments -- I just wanted to say that I'm grateful for your spectacular music and the special energy you brought to it. I really appreciate "attack me with your love", but I may be someone who appreciates your song "You're a Winner" more than most if not all. So much love and good vibes 💪
I was a very young kid when it came out and was obsessed. It completely turned my brain to funk as a 4year old. I would listen so deep into the many layers of the track, each one having its own effect on me. But really it made dance hard.
Any song that can fill up a dance floor 37 years after it came out is a true classic.
Great song! Love "Candy" too!
Cameo was just DIFFERENT! their RENDITION was like NO OTHER, in a class by itself!
if you ever seen the alligator woman performance you know how they got here
