Hey Mike, I would love to see a video on you timing the engine, installing and adjusting the belt, carb adjustment. Your going to need both hands! =)
Holy crap....I just checked my oil in my single cab today, and noticed the oil level was above the top line. A couple of hours later I watched this video. Time to order another fuel pump! Im so glad I saw this.
Wow Mike! This video is packed full of good stuff! Thank you! 😎😎😎
I had 11 shims on my alternator pulley. Now have 9. Thanks Mile. Will check all the other points of concern. Thank you.
that still might work at 11....but not necessary to have them many.
Man all good advice Mike. Food for thought. Glad someone said it all in a real world way. 🤙🏻
My 69 bug never broke down on me while out on the open road over six years. I kept it maintained, watched the engine temps, and never ran it so hard to do damage. I always had tools and a few major spare parts, that is probably why I never needed them (extra coil, extra carburetor, length of fuel line, etc.)
Thanks for the tips ! Mike can you do a tutorial on making 4 way flashers for vws 1965 and earlier vw bugs ? Also we wanna hear more Earl Scheib and 1980s stores!
I had old style fuel pump brass tube pressure side popped out keeped pumping fuel well I drove off fuel in carbs till it got lean and backfired.looked in rearview mirror saw flames brass tube was still clamped to fuel line .64 bug big bore 40hp 1600 crank 40horse rods duelport 40horse heads.
I had the brass tube pop out of carb. It soaked the engine with gas but didn’t catch on fire. Slightly bent the end in a vice and tapped it back in with some permatex. Now I have an aftermarket carb with threaded fitting. Why Vw didn’t use a threaded fitting. Maybe to save a dollar. I keep a fire extinguisher on board as well
In case your fuel inlet has slipped out, Loctite makes various sleeve retaining compounds you can use on the fuel inlet to basically glue it into the carb body to keep it from slipping back off. I forget which one it is but Loctite has documentation on all the compounds on their website.
when I do that I also leash it. sometimes that stuff can still fail. But the leash will stop it from ruining the engine.
WW also has the 6 volt starter relay kit Works great also the new Pat Downs distributor puts me in mind of a ford 2.3 engine in rangers and small mustangs
yea a little more $$$
I have Continental fuel hose on mine, just over a year old rotten and spit. Looks like it’s been on there for 30 years. The code on it is ethanol compatible.
MOST EXCELLENT POST !!
Thank you 😊
Thanks Mike. That's good stuff to know.
Hey Mike great video! I just converted to an alternator on my 1600. Do I need to do something different now with my fuel pump? Thanks buddy
If it doesn’t interfere with the alternator no.
The ignition cap for the shock wave/magnaspark distributor, is the same as the ford 2.3L engine distributor from the 80's.I bought one and it fit nice. I'm not sure about the rotor yet.
Yea I knew it was something I worked on back then. Looks like Ford Tempo....I am going to say that is IT.....
rotor looks like ford ranger. 2.3 same cap too I dont really know.
@@Mikefngarage Ford Tempo/Escort/Mustang/Ranger, etc.
@@Mikefngarage I need to buy the ignition rotor, to compare and to see if it fits the distributor.
A friend of mine who does a lot of Volkswagen work told me the Pat Downs/CB distributor is Ford based.
I recognize it from something I have worked on. maybe ford
@@Mikefngarage ironic, the model t guys use a VW distributor with adaptor.
@@earlt_vw makes sense since there was tons of them made and vws we're everywhere at one point
I don't know if they still have them but I got 10 12v dash lights for 2.18 $ from NAPA
I would run Mallaory duel points distributor in my Dodge 426 Hemi race car with coil //Mallory make good stuff
I remember those. They worked really good.
What is that fuse next to the coil for?
fan switch relay. for external fans.
Hey Mike ! Last week I got my a-s chewed out by Tommy , he owns a VW shop down here ! When I told him Rambus can hit 100 he started telling me " are you crazy " do you know what will happen if you valve float and the exhaust valve hit the piston at that RPM ? Then he started on that I should go back to a stock 34 carb and get rid of the 32/36 . HE DON'T WANT ME TO HAVE NO FUN !!!!!!
those 32 36 if you can get the jetting right will totally fly.
Ola, sempre muito bom seus videos não perco nenhum , eu tenho um VW 63 6v com uma bateria de 150 Amper , no caso se colocar esse rele de 6v ele aguentaria essa bateria ? grato e saudação do Brasil .
should be fine.
That spark distributor reminded me of one of an Opel Ascona or Monza. (Europe car) I had to look it up. But it doesn’t quite match.
ford 80s tempist ranger 2.2l.
Hello Mike. I like a lot tour videos. I have a question what os the correct dwell on a VW aircool. Regards from Portugal.
45 degrees
Hey Mike ! on the shims it's because the nut will run out of threads ( bottom out ) I don't have but 4 shims but I have a J.C. Whitney witch hat chrome spacer that is taller than a stock one . Mike I have found a dog house cooler complete set up , it's not all from the same engine but that don't matter . I think I will get a new aluminum cooler because getting out all the trash mite be a no-no + the old one could be rotten ?
yea hit up car craft for that. they get them from AA....I think they are the importer if not IAP. so car craft would be the cheapest. New one good idea unless you have some sort of solvent tank and a sonic cleaner. Dip it in the sonic cleaner then run solvent through it for a few hours. Then blow it out and brake clean it. any potential guesswork and you loose the motor so not worth any risk.
woo a VACUUM DIST, LOOK DUCKMAN HE GOT 1 RIGHT //LOL Mike has the right 1 vacuum .
I think full advance is about 24 degrees on some of those. So you can run more advance at idle and less at top end. Sometimes that is good.
Great video as always. New again to VWs after a 40-year absence. I came across that same oil bath air cleaner. Would it be OK for a 1500?
Yes, absolutely
Good video , thanks Mike. What’s that usb charger set up on the 6 volt bug??
it blew out. worked for a while though Motorcycle one. I am going to put another one in there with a mini inverter I get off ebay. will handle 7a.
@@Mikefngarage thanks for the reply. Need one for my 6 volt bus!
