so a good thing to mention is the different types of equipment that can be used not just what your using and what the specs of the equipment should be for best results of preforming the job.
I love that wood smell you get after firing up the engine after carbon blast. Then the panic on the first timers face when it runs like shit for the first few minutes.
I would guess the most labor intensive part of the job is the prep. You got to remove the intake manifold / connectors, clean the throttle body, and put everything back together - correctly. Some intake manifolds are a lot of trouble to remove.
I'm using a Rubber hose with a 90 degree, with two dog ear relief cuts into the end of the hose.. so it collapses into the intake port.. a HOLE drilled into the hose so I can use the "Wand".. that tool simply isnt required.
He seems to not really like Harbor Freight. I don’t like Wal-Mart. But both of those stores are very similar. Cheap imported stuff that people buy to save money and also convenience. Just saying-these stores exist as a result of control capitalism that is happening right in front of our faces. If you shop at Wal-Mart, don’t feel justified to have disdain to Harbor Freight!
FIND A WAY TO FEED FINE WALNUT SHELLS INTO INTAKE VAC SOURCE WITH CAR RUNNING, COULD THEN CLEAN VALVES AS YOU DRIVE THUS BURNING THE SHELLS, ALTERNATIVE FUEL SHOULD EVEN INCREASE MPG OF CAR. COURSE IT WOULD CAUSE A BIT OF A WOOD SMOKE SMELL AND MAY PISS OFF EPA.
Thanks - after recovering from sticker shock -- $1,000 price tag the Audi mechanic quoted for carbon cleaning, looking for the best way to remove the deposits. Let me know if you'll be posting a 2.0L VW or Audi intake manifold removal, walnut blasting
That's the video you should do! You don't have to show disassembly or anything, just 7-8 minutes of the actual cleaning. I'm sure it would get tons of views,I am not aware of such video on RUclips.
Nick Nicu at 23:40 of this video you can see me using a similar setup: ruclips.net/video/4Pd2aYxW-QM/видео.htmlm43s Before & after images at the end of the video.
That intake port adapter looks like the BMW/Mini one. Can you use that on other makes and models? I've been looking for one for my 3.6 Chevy but no luck so far
can make one using a radiator hose. measure the I.D. of the intake and go to auto parts shop (when they're not busy) and find a hose that will snug fit into the intake and then drill a hole for the walnut-blast tip, then secure the shop-vac hose to the other end and go at it (save yourself approx. $80)
I made one of those exact walnut blasters using the harbor freight blaster and media, cost a total of 100 USD. And for the part that goes into the intake I use different size heater hoses or scrap radiator hoses and adapt them to the vacuum.
Flat Rate Master I had a 2012 I believe if was, ford edge with direct injection that was throwing a p0171. All data pids were normal except fuel trims were maxed. O2 responded well to lean/rich conditions, map was okay, fuel sample came out okay, smoke the intake, no vacuum leaks, crimped off pcv/vacuum hoses one at a time, no change. Everything appeared normal except fuel trims. Found a forum with a guy that had the same problem and it ended up being carbon on the intake valves
my man said coke twice now im thinkin twice bout those sweats.... however you are a certified real one bro subbed. thank yo so much. In owning an Audi Ive become a mechanic somehow lol
I can't believe I missed this video, I'm sure I will be seeing these cars come into the shop pretty soon with drivablity issues, I'm already doing timing chains on them. Great info!
Since no one else is replying…I have heard that meth injection is fantastic for direct injection engines….but if you run a meth set up in your car-- YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE that you have some way to know when your methanol is running out. Look into that.
google your car make adding "walnut blaster adaptor" and it will bring back a lot of different attachments. Theres one listing on eBay for about 8 or 9 in a pack for about £90 inc delivery to the UK from the USA.
I understand that different engines and conditions can affect the frequency of this service needing done. However, in your experience what mileage intervals would it be recommended by you to get this service done on a gas direct injection motor?

LOL, always fun on that first start up! We did have a no start after we did a blast on a Tiquan, 3 coils died on start up:(

I'm wondering if a wet nitrous system would help..... Just a mild 50 25 horsepower gain.... the fuel would wash the intake valves...
For the home mechanic, how many CFM does the media blaster need?
Would also like to know the answer to this question
I have a 2016 Chevrolet Impala Limited Ls with the 3.6 Direct Injected. Does this apply to those engines?
I have a blasting cabinet but never thought about using walnut shells. Interesting.
Walnuts are way less aggressive than other media
Now you'll have to do a video showing it in action!!!
He says he won't do DIY videos.
I put a link in the description to ThomasEVOVCDS doing a service
Awesome vid! You seem to find a lot of interesting topics. Hope you and your family stay safe with the upcoming storm!
We made it though without issues, thank you!
What kind of air compressor do I need to run this blaster setup
I was looking over your shoulder, thinking, "That looks like a HFT media blaster. "
That was funny.
LOL!
Adapter is home made? Where you bought it or what make/model?
The nozzle is home made. Where you bought it? Do they make something more professional?
Is that 40 Lb abrasive blaster from Harbor Freight? =))
I am going tosee if there is a video on how to do this seems interesting.
I added a link in the description to a video showing the process

I didn't know about the coking issue with direct injection. Very informative. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you found it informative!
I was expecting the word SUCK, instead of coke :)

Another good one Michael ! Get eveything tied down sounds like we will get some winds from the storm!
Much of nothing at my house, though Shawn lost power at his house for 12 hours and he lives in the city
Flat Rate Master we got wind and a LOT of rain.
Same here!

Does the adapter you show fit the VW/Audi 2.0 Tfsi?
Thanks for the video & advice!
+C Bassich it is not designed for that engine but it works for it
Thanks - after recovering from sticker shock -- $1,000 price tag the Audi mechanic quoted for carbon cleaning, looking for the best way to remove the deposits. Let me know if you'll be posting a 2.0L VW or Audi intake manifold removal, walnut blasting
Could buy a damn nice air compressor and equipment for that price!

Watch Thomas EXOVCDS video it is a great example

Please show a demonstration! Love your videos thanks for teaching an sharing with us.
A demo would be hard to film as it would just be a cloud of dust, but If I can i will
Oh wait no compressor needed?
do they coke up from egr gas and crank case vapor?
Oil vapors, no egr in the intake
An oil catch can would be a perfect thing for these DI engines, yes?
Yes a catch can would prevent a lot of these issues
Hello! Have you done the newer Subaru 2.0 liter DIT (2015+ WRX models)? What is the cost for your service?
+dsonyay i,nor the shop has not, but we have a set fee, cost of intake removal and .5 per cylinders, so 2 hrs plus intake removal
Flat Rate Master thanks :)

You can but the adapters on ebay pretty cheap too!
Where did you get the AL. adapter to fit the 2.0 head?
Walnuts are fine, I'm more of a pecan guy, peanuts are good too although they are legumes not nuts. Nice video as usual.
LMFAO!
are black walnuts good?
No dust from my kenmoore unit. Makes the engine run nice.
What shop is this guy at?
Ever have coked up valves on direct injection cause a p0171?
Can't say I have but possible if really bad and they kept driving it
Flat Rate Master I had a 2012 I believe if was, ford edge with direct injection that was throwing a p0171. All data pids were normal except fuel trims were maxed. Where are you located
Thanks, this is going to be a real issue as these vehicles get older. (maybe already is)
+29 auto we do a couple a month for driveablity issues
my man said coke twice now im thinkin twice bout those sweats.... however you are a certified real one bro subbed. thank yo so much. In owning an Audi Ive become a mechanic somehow lol
I can't believe I missed this video, I'm sure I will be seeing these cars come into the shop pretty soon with drivablity issues, I'm already doing timing chains on them. Great info!
What kinda of shop vac adapter do you use for Ford and Chevy DI engines?
We currently only have the 1 adapter, and on gm it doesn' t work well, but we do no see many ford or gm vehicles
I also have to say u always have great topivs for vids. Keep them coming on all types of topics.
Great video mate something I haven't done yet
LOL, we do it quite often for driveablilty issues
What cfm ratio do you need on your air compressor?
+Jerry Lo simple answer is a lot, the shop has 2 80 gallon compressors
Probably 20 cfm bare minimum for a small commercial shop if your running a blaster.
Ya where's the demo ?
We the walnut she'll from hb aswell
It works!
Don't we miss the port injection? With so much government mandate on fuel economy gdi is pretty much here to stay. Thanks for the info again frm!!
LOL!
Don't worry. Trump will have us all rolling coal from our gasoline engines soon.
That blaster looks bad ass. GP
It works well!
What do you think of methanol injection in the intake as preventative measures? Is methanol a good cleaning agent for the stems?
Since no one else is replying…I have heard that meth injection is fantastic for direct injection engines….but if you run a meth set up in your car-- YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE that you have some way to know when your methanol is running out. Look into that.
Does the adapter work on a Kia 2.4? Have not taken the intake off yet.
Can't say i haven't done a kia yet
Would that adapter work on a lexus?
Not well, you want one that completely covers the port
google your car make adding "walnut blaster adaptor" and it will bring back a lot of different attachments. Theres one listing on eBay for about 8 or 9 in a pack for about £90 inc delivery to the UK from the USA.
UPDATE! Ive got a solution to all those who worry about carbon build up on the intake valves, buy a Toyota. k bye.
LOL
And run top tier fuel people!!!!
Hyundai and Kia don't have carbon problems on their direct injected cars
Scotty Kilmer has been telling us for years and we just thought he really liked those cars 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I think my washing machine should just wash clothes, not drive me to the store.
I understand that different engines and conditions can affect the frequency of this service needing done.
However, in your experience what mileage intervals would it be recommended by you to get this service done on a gas direct injection motor?
I have seen it on VWs with as little as 40k to over 100k, all depends on how the car is driven and how the crankcase system is maintained
Sweating like the cast of SNL during random drug inspection.
Must be really hot there. You're sweating like a walrus
Is that vacuum adapter universal?
No there is many special adapters available
The GM 3.6 which is a pile of junk is well known for this too
3.6 is junk and has many issues! including carbon
Have seen it before, timing chain and bottom end problems.Have one out of a 2010 Traverse with 75,000 miles on it that has a bad bottom end.
Who puts a thumbs down on free information I rest my case with people.Gee !
Love the vids keep it up
will do!
I would never buy walnuts for harbor freight
700 for bmw.
We wont see work, not talking ;)
Where did you get the AL adapter for the 2.0?
On a 335d..Does the valve cover have to be removed or can I just bend my tubing?
Can't help you do not work on diesels, Sorry
