- In the process of running your handmade business you are going to encounter a LOT of opinions abut how you should be running it. In this video I'm talking about how you can run your business imperfectly and still have it be a success for you.. even if the negative Nancy's out there don't agree. 😁

I don’t think I’ve had a video so calmly resonate with me as much as this did, I’ve started my own shop adventure and I’ve been too carried away with things being perfect that I sometimes forget how much I actually enjoy my pieces and having the little store that I do. Thank you for showing up and giving me the reminder and encouragement to continue my love of crafting, in the waves of videos that I’m getting recommended of “10 things you HAVE to do to have a successful business” that are all unrealistic for someone just starting out.
New subscriber!! I am so glad I found you! Wonderful advice! I make handmade greeting cards and it never ceases to amaze me how much unsolicited advice people give you and it's almost ALWAYS from people who have never made a handmade card or had a business. From what I design, to the prices I charge, to the marketplaces I sell, they always have something to say - good and bad! So I have learned to roll my eyes in my mind, rather than out loud now. 🤣🤣🤣
I’m on year 2 of a handmade business, making one of a kind pieces. I’m not “successful” yet in the sense that I’m still spending more money than I’m making BUT every month is a little better than the last and this year I’m diversifying into craft shows. I did my first one last December and it went pretty well. Thank you for your advice and common sense approach. I learn something every time I watch! Very inspiring!
“Well, you COULD never!”👀🤣
I loved that the most 🤣👏
There was a commercial years ago in the States with the slogan “do one thing and do it well”. As an individual, you really have to be careful not to spread yourself too thin.
As someone who is thinking of starting a small handmade business - thank you! This was so sweet, supportive and actually helpful stuff🙏
Honestly, I enjoy your channel because you're so relatable. Other people either talk so much (or as you like to say, waffle) they don't say anything of substance or they're so far ahead it's not realistic for someone just starting out. I'm also tired of people "you have to do only this only in this style or people will get confused". I tried following it but I can't just pigeon-hole myself into one style/type of product.
Also getting tired of showing relatives new stuff I made and am excited about, only for them to go "nice, but will it sell?" every single time. 🤦♀
Why are family members like this?? 😄 I remember being the same as you when I got started, I learned quickly to not share things with them because I would always come away feeling deflated.
It was hard to hold on to at the time, but it really was coming from a place of love. I think they thought they were being practical and 'realistic' when in all actuality, they were projecting their own fears onto me.
Find your people, even if only online and share with them. They'll get it and your family will catch up later on. 😉💚
I find it utter madness that people would reach out and criticize how someone runs their business. When they clearly are running a successful business that is paying their mortgage.
Love this new feel of video, and you're the one that made me take the plunge into video content for my handmade business! Just shorts right now, but full length video is finally being filmed.
Oh really? That's so cool! 😁 How are you finding shorts? I experimented with them a while ago and it shocks me how they still get views and comments even over a year on!
@@KimBliss I'm liking that they are quite easy to produce and edit so you can feel like you're "present" if that makes sense. And they pull double duty as Instagram reels. Also a lot of the simple little jobs don't really require 5+mins of footage to go through. Doesn't promote much engagement though. I only generally see comments from people I know IRL and my hopes for doing video content is more "community building" than anything else.
You are so genuine with your life pointview , i like that a lot , i`m also on shopify , not much sells right now but as you said slowly and steady that is the key for everything in life ,
"Anyone else can just get in the bin" I laughed out loud 🤣 As an American, I was wondering for half a second what bin is she even talking about LOL
I love your videos! I have been inspired to follow my dream and i am opening a brick and mortar shop! Its almost ready to open! I rate success by how much i I create in my life!
I’ll just be over here across the pond, throwing spaghetti! 😂
Here's to it sticking! 😁🍝
Love listening to you! Just wanted to say I loved the sweatshirt you created. Good luck with the repurposing - there's such a positivity around this I'm sure it'll be a success!
I think we also have to stop letting people define what success is. I have an artist friend who has been a "successful" professional artist for years now (i.e. getting big jobs, living off her income, etc), but has just recently quit work as an artist to get a "real job". This is success for her, because instead of having all the stress that comes with trying to be creative while under a deadline, she can now create the kinds of art she wants to create, when she feels like it. It still sells, so nice bonus money, but none of the stress. Just because you're a fantastic artist, doesn't mean you HAVE to earn a full-time income from your art in order to be successful. Success should be based on your own goals and aspirations, not what other people say success should be.
Yes, this is EXACTLY my point.
THANK YOU for the reveal I was about to be angry because part way into the cutting I was invested!! 😂😂🙏🏻 so cute. Can’t wait to see more. ❤
As if I'd leave you hanging! 😄
Thank You for the affirmations. I haven't even started my small business as yet, only in the initial phases but I will hold strong to everything you have said.
Thank you, Kim! this is very uplifting and inspiring.
I think this video was just the nudge I needed to finally start my Etsy shop! Thank you for your no-nonsense advice❤
You always make me laugh Kim! Great video! Love the tops you’re making! Hugs! Tina 🩷🌷
Cheers Tina! 💚💚
I LOVE that you are being your authentic self, going about your business how you see fit and doing what feels good to your soul! I've been in that mindset for a while but it's hard to keep it going when there is an assumed pressure from the world. Your videos help ease that a bit. Thank you!!
Thank you, I really appreciate that and I get what you mean about dealing with assumed pressure. Don't give up on your mindset. I know it's easier said than done sometimes, but you need to create your business so that it works for you, not other way around. 💚
@KimBliss absolutely! Thank you!! Can't wait for your next video!
Nice one Kim!!! 😁
Hehe, cheers John! 😄
No! thank you Kim. You have no idea how much you've helped me with my business 😁 Every time I watch your videos I find myself saying, OMG! That's so true! I'm already looking forward to the next one 😍
Love it. Thank you for this. All the truths!!!!!! ps. I loved the 1 penny pick and mix. I liked the pink shrimps and the chocolate mice. :P
Pink shrimps!! 🍬 😍
Love the talk and the demo! I have several sweatshirts that need an overhaul. I've lost a lot of weight and I need to alter some of them. They are older and stained, and I want to practice on my applique while I hone my skills. Thank you.
Love your content, just joined your channel.... 😊
You legend! Welcome to the extra chaos. 😄💚
I sooo agree with you Kim. There will be people out there who would judge your business skin deep. Sometimes it makes me scratch my head and think to myself, “The mere fact that I don’t ask other people for anything free to feed my family should mean something?” 😅
I’m currently throwing spaghetti on the wall with my business that I’ve been working on for a while now, but just focused in consignment. Now I’m starting to promote it online and I’m embracing patience. Even with my YT channel. If only I could close my eyes just so I will not see the numbers while posting. I don’t wanna stress about it. It’s better to let it grow organically, right? 🤭🤭🤭 See? I’m learning from you. 😅😅😅
It often baffles me how much time some people will spend focusing on other sellers' businesses instead of their own.
I get that comparison is easy, and we all want to make sure we're on the right track, but the best way to do that is to compete against ourselves. Which sounds very TED Talk-esqe, but is so true! 😄
Great advice, thanks, love the sweatshirt 🤩
I really like your videos, I am in Australia but it’s really relatable
Love the sweatshirt, Kim. And well said. Claire
fansy seeing you here to HAHAHAH
The way I said it like a nonchalant stalker too. 😄
Hahaha send them off with a smile and a... 🤣👌
I really wanted to drop a "yer mum", but I thought that was too strong. 😄
Oh ... this was a very good video! I enjoyed your talking and your working and allowing us to see how you handled the naysayers...with an English? British? UK? European? two finger salute.
If I comprehended your two fingers correctly (and I could be entirely wrong ... but I don't think so), here in the U.S. we only use our middle finger. In dire circumstances, depending upon the perceived strength of the delivered message, we could very well add a snarl in order to slightly reveal our canines, while using a strong upward UMPH, then the F word followed by the word "you" just in case the naysayers were unsure to whom our one finger salute was meant for.
In Sisterhood with you, please allow me to add my middle finger to your two, so the naysayers understand that we artists stand together. And as I am well aware that you could be disciplined by YT for using the F word in your video, I'll do it for you. If you listen closely, you may hear me bellowing it at them all the way from here in Chicago where we are excellent, and known for, delivering this type of message when they hurt the feelings of someone we truly like and hold dear...like you, my friend.
Best wishes, and hugs.
P.S. Thank you so much for allowing me, in solidarity, to use the one-finger salute followed by the F and the "you" word. Being 75, I seldom have such an excellent opportunity. Most of the naysayers I know have died.
Your comment made me chuckle, Susan! I must confess, sometimes nothing beats a good middle finger response. 😄
@@KimBliss Absolutely, and it only gets better with age. Hugs!
preparation stage, huh? I feel called out 😭
If it's any consolation, I find myself in getting stuck in the preparation swamp a lot too. 😄
Ads are so hit and miss for me! I think some of my competitors click on them some days honestly 😔
What I took from this weeks vlog.
1. I need a Womble on my Desk.
2. More Spaghetti throwing
3. I must find room to get my sewing machine out (Im more likely to use it).
And my true confession..... I did my books up to end Jan. If there is no miracle in Feb and March I will make a lovely loss (sbeing ill sucks) and then I may have accidently bought another heat press last week which should arrive soon. Do I need 3 No. should I sell at least one yes, will I, probably not (just in case I need it lol). So my job this week. Sort my pigsty(studio) and make room for the sewing machine and the new heat press and throw some more spaghetti
Everyone needs a womble in their life. 😄
Another fantastic video, Kim. It baffles me how people can be so opinionated about someone else's business.
I can't wait to see the finished jumpers, I might have my eye on one. 😍 I have a feeling they aren't going to be in the shop for long.
Are we still playing hunt the Womble? I remember ages ago you mentioned about hiding it in videos, then i promptly forgot about it until this video. So, just to say I found the Womble!! 😁😁💚
I love that you remember the hide the womble game! I stopped doing it in the end because I realised I could only really only hide her in my shelving. But now that I'm adding more vlog-style bits to my videos and moving around more, maybe I'll start it up again... oooooh this could be fun! 😄
It would be so much fun 😁💚
I yhink iv missed a few ,ty ty ty iv still not found what platform suites me ,im the one who has to get all ducks in a row, its the fear of failure but never actually starting is epic failure.... iv just got to be brave a tiny Chinese boy said as i wasnt very brave pehaps i should be called it to remind me to be brave ,,,,makes sense, at Christmas i had a couple of friends round only a quick visit, i was moving stuff around i sew ,but iv been playing with resin, well i had a 1/2 tote full of the letters thinking oooo i could put thes in old picture frames ,, well i dropped them ,,, i ended up selling about 40 made into keyrings all bagged up cos im the one ducks in row ....i just feel cheesy lol, i love ur honest words of wisdom ,fed up going round in circles
Ty again xx❤
😊❤
Listing every day & listing 100+ listings is ridiculous. That alone would give me a migraine & I would not have a life! I have under 30 listings & I'm doing well. No, I'm not making millions, but I am able to stay and work from my home. I have not used paid ads as well. I do offer coupons to my customers. Ex; abandoned carts, thank you, etc.
Exactly!
I think I've got 32 items, maybe 3 or 4 of them sell regularly. I see it like fishing... The others might cost 80p a year to list and I'll just hope it sells once a year.. though some haven't sold at all in 3 years... What if someone was looking at the little fish but ending up taking a big fish.. I'd never know it but it is possible.. I'm not racing to get to 100 items.. I'd rather be happy in myself knowing I've designed/made some things... Especially the latter...
Yes! And I like how you see that some items may not get many sales, but might be what attract people to your shop in the first place. They may not bring in sales, but they still have an important part to play. 👍
You have Madam Cholet 😱
Close! It's Orinoco, without the hat. 😁
oh man 🤦🏻♀️
I think your YT channel is your storefront, I would like to see you make your videos in a space which is filled with your products also, after watching loads of your videos I've come to the conclusion that you don't have any legs....Right, what's for dinner. 🙂
RUclipsr's don't have legs. Fact. 😄
😂😂😂
I think it’s sad that a business goes out of its way to criticize another small business. What happened to the motto of supporting other small businesses in the spirit of “a rising tide lifts all boats?”
Beats me.
I really needed to hear this today. Great advice, straight to the point, and not sugar coated. Spicy coated. Just the way I speak it and like to hear it myself. 😂👏🎯 In all seriousness, the timing of this popping up on the feed, and the messaging here was right on time. Very grateful for the nudge. Much love from the PNW 🌲🏔🍄☕🧶🪡
I find it kind of bizarre/arrogant though how people expect to have no negative comments. Like in real life not everyone is going to like everyone but it seems people these days expect constant praise and positivity which just isn't realistic.
I was brought up (granted, a long time ago) that if you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything. 🌼💚🌼
Negative comments are different from giving business advice when no-one has asked 🙂
Negative commentary given without compassion is just cruelty.
And I find it bizarre/arrogant that many people feel that they can say whatever they want without consequence.
I find it bizarre that people leave negative comments. Why do that except to try and feel superior (but actually look very small)? Why not just move on to another video? It's incredibly arrogant for someone to think they know better than the video creator about their life or business, and even worse - that anyone cares to read their negative comment. Be a better human.
@KimBliss I'm not referring to anything cruel or personal, I'm saying we need to expect balance. Constant praise and perfection don't reflect real life. I just find it funny cos if you read the LONG list of comments telling content-makers how inspiring and wonderful they are, you would think that would be enough but they hyperfixate on like one negative one.
