Hey Paul! Good stuff man! Thanks for sharing. I'm from S.Africa, and we have this pain in our backsides called 'load shedding'. Our power supply gets cut quite often on a rotational grid basis due to... well, S.African crap. I've seen a video on homesteaders that made a rocket oven before, not much indept tech, but thats just enough to get me hooked. They had the same barrel with a 2" / 50mm spacing between oven and insulation. If I remember correctly, it heated to 350F / 180C in 15mins! Oh, the insulation was grog. Mixture of clay and hay! Looked so cool and rustic man. Now I know from your explanation, that rocket science is achievable from just a curious pipe fitter like myself! 😉👌👏👏👏
Go figure, I just bought a metal oven so I could build a rocket stove to heat it and now I find this video. Talk about great timing. :) Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this video.
dan ohmann and i are cooking up two more youtube videos. i hope to have them out in the next couple of days. folks here are cooking lots of stuff on our rocket oven and trying to take lots of video. what do you all wanna see?
Thermosiphon means that heated fluids (air, exhaust, or even water) rising up will draw some other warm (or cool) fluids to follow them, even if it means bringing a hot gas downward briefly to feed the upward movement. It's what allows the fire to burn upside-down and sideways in the firebox, and also helps us heat the oven evenly by where we locate the chimney outlet. All natural fuel fires burn the off-gas products and tiny particulates, not the solid parts, of the fuel. You can call a clean-burning fire by fancy names; but basically, it's a virtually smoke-free fire that does an efficient job at turning wood (and creosote) into heat. We are finding we can usually bake more pounds of food than we used pounds of wood; it's that efficient.
Hi Paul, thanks for sharing this video with us. I actually toyed with the idea of kiln-cum-oven that could be usable for baking with less firewod being fed and therefore less intense heat, but my worry was about the chemicals produced by the burning process that would enter the "bell" of the oven - as far as I have seen they cause color changes in pottery and I suspect they would not be good for food items either. Now I wonder whether it'd be possible to make an enclosed ceramic "bell" - have you guys ever tried something of this kind?
what you are describing is "white oven" vs "black oven". We have a kiln here that is black, like what you describe. The rocket ovens we have here are white. I have not yet explored the idea of a white kiln.
speaking of this white oven you demonstrate - what kind of metal are you using for the inner chamber? looks like standard barrel to me, doesn't it release toxic stuff off the walls when heated? I would think a stainless steel barrel'd do the trick but it also drive the cost of the oven quite high.
in this vid: mild steel. A **LOT** of detail on that in the upcoming dvd. As for stainless: keep in mind that stainless does not conduct heat very well.
There doesn't seem to be two oven type tubes that would have an air flow between them. Maybe I misunderstand but it looks like the insulation is the heat exchange. Depending on the kind of insulation that might not be good. Can you clarify?
Boy now I feel like a dummy for missing out on the oven Kickstarter. I'll have to pay the full price when it's all out! That's some pretty exciting stuff. It will be cool to see different versions and prettified versions to increase some more pedestrian appeal.
So currently in our farm building we use a traditional wood firebox/stove. Inside this stove we have a special heating coil that heats our water. If I built this rocket oven stove and placed a similar heating coil and placed it on the outside of the barrel where the heat, soot etc circulates to heat the oven, I assume I should get temperatures around 1000- 1500 degrees to heat the water that passes through this coil? Then I can heat my water while baking.
After a couple of practice sessions, we are finding the oven holds nicely at 350 if we just add wood about 2 small sticks at a time. (1 to 2" wood, most people would call it big kindling.) We use a brick or cover to reduce the air intake, so it matches this smaller volume of wood.
350 is a good temperature. almost everything including bread is good at that temperature but what if one wants 400-500 for pizza? just put in more wood? instead of 1-2 pieces to maintain?
yeah they are changing the design. if you look at the gaming section of youtube they've completely redesigned the entire site. i think they are planning on doing the rest of it soon as well
if you're subscribe button atm you will still get the bell, if you don't then you can still see the bell if you go to the homepage, click on the subscriptions from the menu and then go back to the channel, but it is being removed if the gaming youtube channels are anything to go by

Plz tell me the right insulating material that used in rocket oven

I'd love to see something like biscuits or cookies - those sound harder than pizza to bake without burning, so I think that would be impressive.
we now have some raw video of peanut butter cookies and another of strawberry shortcake!
Hi Paul, could we have videos about bread baking? Thx for everything you guys do.
PIE Paul, how can your first video of a rocket oven not be about baking a pie?
we have a kickstarter video coming soon. lots of pie in that!
This is perfect. I've had an idea bouncing around in my head about a modular rocket mass heater, biochar maker, pizza oven system.
A tip: watch series on KaldroStream. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Ryland Zain Yup, have been watching on kaldroStream for years myself :D
@Ryland Zain Yea, have been using Kaldrostream for years myself :)
Plz tell me this rocket oven is good for baking and what is the thing used for insulating oven
We made a whole movie about this at permies.com/ovens - does that help?
Step 1. Light rocket
Step 2. Oven
🥖 Congratulations 👏
What distancr is the air-space between the outer carcass and the clean cook capsule please
PAUL TENES ALGUN PLANO..AUNQUE SEA HECHO A MANO. TELO AGRADECERIA. DIOS TE BENDIGA
Why am I watching this with such an enjoyment?
As the warm air leaves the cylinder and cold air goes down, is there an interference of the two opposing air flows?
Awesome..tutorial tenk you
Ashes cleaning?
hmmm what about using a rocket system in a cob earthen oven?
Great tutorial and to the point. Will be following you - Thanks. Awesome
are both the inner and outer chamber made of steel?
Get all the details of this build here permies.com/ovens
Stainless steel will last much much longer then regular steel. Propane tanks would hold up for quite a long time though.
So it is a termosyphon natural draft biomass gasifier and producer gas burner in one ?

Hard working people salute to them

Insulation is to prevent heat exchange.
i didn't know this existed :-) very neat! thanks for sharing 👍
bean sprout +1
Welcome

Have you seen our DVD called "Boom Squish"?
You don't need those kind of temperatures to heat water!
It was wonderful. Thank you.
What to use for insulation?
what is used to insulate your bakeing chamber
rock wool
How can I purchase one
you can get the movie and plans by following the link in the pinned comment from Paul
Hi Paul, How do you control the the temperature?
After a couple of practice sessions, we are finding the oven holds nicely at 350 if we just add wood about 2 small sticks at a time. (1 to 2" wood, most people would call it big kindling.) We use a brick or cover to reduce the air intake, so it matches this smaller volume of wood.
cool! so you need to sit near the whole time you bake, so you can keep feeding, correct?
I would think if one put long pieces in, about 4-6 feet one would not have to watch it so closely?
350 is a good temperature. almost everything including bread is good at that temperature but what if one wants 400-500 for pizza? just put in more wood? instead of 1-2 pieces to maintain?
Thanks. Now I get it.
can you please provide dimensions of the j-tube section? for it to be diy proof
i think it is in the plans permies.com/w/rocket-oven-plans
Perfect project for me to use my everlast to make. I bet it bakes wonderfully.
Wow so cool thanks
I can't wait until the Kickstarter for the instructional video on this one.
i hope to start the kickstarter on monday.
Waiting with bated breath.
@8Truth Seeking you do know that we made a whole movie about this, right? permies.com/t/rocket-ovens
That was awesome... I'm going to make this into a oven/ biochar kiln
Nothing like a good old smoked brisket though
Hi Paul, this Rocket Oven is wonderful. May I ask if this unit is also good for cooking some rice cakes?... Thanks....
Excelente gracias
i was thinking of asking folks to "click on the bell" - but it seems to be not there anymore. Is it just me?
I see a bell!
yeah they are changing the design. if you look at the gaming section of youtube they've completely redesigned the entire site. i think they are planning on doing the rest of it soon as well
i am perpetually confused by youtube. I have 72,000 subscribers, but I suspect that only a handful learn about my videos.
I see the bell, clicked it. Thanks. Happy to support you on patreon.
