One of the best things that I miss about arcades is the physical aspect. Having a mockup cockpit, or weapon to play with is such a great experience and many kids may never enjoy that.
Sure we have VR now but it's just not the same. There's no recoil like in an arcade light gun, there's no "thunk" of a Daytona shifter being slammed with full strength.
There's no weird people smell and oily joysticks!
Gosh this brought back memories. Thanks. I'll have to pay Joypolis a visit one day.

    • @ironhell813

Believe it or not there are new arcade cabinets that feature vr helmets to combine for an awesome experience!

    • @DicePunk
      @DicePunk 13 дней назад +1

@ironhell813 I'm aware! Those are fun too and you'll find that there are open-plan VR arenas for co-op and even team deathmatch games.
I spend a lot of time in VR and I'm a huge fan. But when you climb into the cockpit of an R360 machine to play G-Loc, the feeling is incomparable.

    • @ironhell813

@@DicePunk I think if more arcades features only tactile machines there would be more of them because you can’t really replicate that at home…
I mean, it could be the return of the arcade to the west.
It’s largely how Japanese arcades have survived…

an arcade tower where 8 hours can fly is incredible; I can't imagine the experience and energy people get in that place; it must be like a parallel univers. Japan should not erase in the city its signature known for its talent in entertainment; it's like removing Mario from the game. And a 360 unit; Sega's Afterburner was already something back then, that Storm-G is fantastic!

Just back from Japan. People love negative stories, but I saw so many arcades still open. The only difference I noticed was less fighting games since I last visited in 2018. GIGO, Taito, Round1 chains still going strong.
We're lucky to have import arcades in the UK with Dancerush, Taiko, Chunithm, Maimai DX etc but if the scene in Japan dies, it will affect everyone in Europe/The US so... Let's hope arcades in Japan will carry on for a few more years yet.

I get a bit annoyed about the Sega arcade "shut down" stuff. It makes it sound like the arcades have been wiped off the map. In reality, Sega sold their arcade division to GiGO, and those places are currently thriving. That side, I appreciate your tour of Joypolis. I'm excited to go there myself one day.

  • @stevethefishdotnet

Sega and Dreamworks did a similar game arcade in the USA in the late '90s called Gameworks, and it featured such games that consoles could not substitute. I first visited Joypolis in 2000, and went again in '06. So much has changed since then. Mad Panic Gaming did a video of a nearby retro game center, which I believe is in that shopping mall across the way from there. The one with the big Gundam in front. Your channel is a lot like the way mine used to be. Now I don't do game center videos much anymore and primarily do model builds. I'm going to send some traffic to your channel as I know one subscriber of mine watches your channel and I'm sure many more would be interested.
The discount clothing store Shimamura occasionally releases Sega fashion items. I don't know where there are any Shimamura locations in Tokyo, but they are ubiquitous everywhere else it seems. I spent a lot of money on the latest Sega merch explosion, with Megadrive, Saturn, and Dreamcast hand towels, bath towels, cushions, tissue covers, and storage boxes. In the past I bought a Dreamcast jumper jacket and Saturn pajamas there.

    • @pixxellie

I went in 2014. Looks like there's a lot of new stuff, although I think Storm G and the Phoenix Wright setups were there back then. Mai Mai machines were very prolific. Unfortunately my time was limited as I got there late and wanted to proceed to to the nightclub ageHa, which sadly closed down recently like the other Sega arcades.
Something I remember of Joypolis was a bunch of interactive screens that used cameras and Kinect sensors to do odd stuff to people that passed by. Like having your face on a fish, or turning you into a bunch of spheres. Also there was a video game attached to the men's urinals that would give a score based on the amount of peeing you did!

I think going forward the best way to keep arcades alive is to give players an experience they can’t get at home due to space and expense limitations like Storm G for example. I remember as a kid my favorite Sega arcade game was Hang On, it was a motorcycle racing game. There was a motorcycle you would sit on and tilt to steer the bike in the game. Things like that. Although there was a home release of the game on MegaDrive, it wasn’t the same without the tilting bike to control.

Seeing these Japanese amusement parks (especially what Nintendo is doing now) really makes me dream of a Bandai amusement park. They own so many franchises and are closely tied to so many franchises, they could build a whole park off of it. Then there wouldn't be a stupid limited timeframe for their life-size gundam statues.
I'm imagining a giant room with life-sized cockpits of every Gundam, and you're allowed to sit in them.

They are closing down all of their arcades? It's not even worth going to the s3x conventions if these don't exist.

They already closed down every arcade besides this. Some of the old ones got bought by a company named GIGO and are still open though

Sega is a wonderful, but poorly managed company. I will miss their Sega arcades.

Sega blamed the pandemic for having to sell their arcades, but the reality is that they have a reputation for not handling their finances very well. Sega loves spending money, and not preparing for the future.
Look at Sega's competitors. Even though there was a pandemic, Namco and Taito still have their arcades open in Asia and Japan. Both are fine, but only Sega shut down.
It's a real shame that Sega is run by people who can't manage their company properly. Now all their arcades are gone except Joypolis.

I love Sega but yeah one consistent thing about Sega is poor management even back in the 90s. They just got lucky with the Genesis in America, and the Saturn in Japan. But sometimes it’s things they can’t control. Dreamcast was amazing and had so many great games, but ultimately failed to convince people to buy, due to PS2 hype.

Quick Google search shows there are lots of sega arcades still open in Japan

The Google results are outdated. They are gigo arcades now and they have removed the sega signs from the buildings. The Google images are often outdated as well. I was disappointed to find that out as well. Here’s an article going into it.
