    A lot of people think that the fact that the lion turtles are the ones that gave the benders the ability to control the elements ruins the lore, but I think it actually fixes a plothole. The turtles gave people the ability to control the elements, but the "original" benders (the moon, the badgermoles, the dragons and the sky bison) still taught people how to *actually* bend and use the elements as an extension of their body. Then the story just passed on from generation to generation and eventually the story of the lion turtles was lost to time. I just thought that if the original benders were able to teach the nonbenders how to bend, no one would be a nonbender since everyone could learn how to bend.

      Right? My best analogy for that is this: the lion turtles gave you a sword (the power of fire/air/water/earth), but that doesn't mean you're a swordsman (bender). Heck, even Wan's lion turtle called it "the power of fire" not "the power to BEND fire".
      To actually become a swordsman, you need someone to teach you how to wield a sword. And in bending, there are no better teachers than the orignal benders, who not only have the ability to control the elements but that it is actually a part of themselves. It's like being taught to by someone who was born with swords for arms, for them the sword is not only a weapon but an exstention of themselves.

      I originally was angry at Korra for that same reason, assuming it retconned the existing lore. But after thinking about it I came to that same conclusion and I adore the show a lot for finally letting us see how humans got the ability to bend in the first place. It also explains the Lion Turtle's quote to Aang a bit more. They didn't have elemental bending unless it was given via lion turtle through an energy-bending technique.

    I like to interprete Raava and Vatuu like Raava being the force of balance, and Vatuu being the force if imbalance aka chaos. There is no good or evil at play here. For the last 10,000 years Raava kept chaos under control and the world was in balance.
    As Unulaq once said, there are no evil spirits, but there are spirist who are imbalanced, and when they're imbalanced, darkness tends to take over.
    Hope this helps and clears some things.

    • @lilybirdflowergum8683
      @lilybirdflowergum8683 2 года назад +7

      No, you’re 100% right. When Vaatu creates dark spirits, he’s enhancing their negative emotions. That doesn’t make them evil, though. For instance, Wan’s spirit friends become dark spirits because they are trying to protect the forest from being burned to the ground. That is not evil intentions. However, it creates chaos, which fuels Vaatu’s power. We can even see this in the first show, where the panda spirit becomes a dark spirit because (yet again) the Fire Nation burned its forest to the ground. It is not evil when it’s a dark spirit. It is hurt and lashing out because its home had been ruthlessly destroyed by humans. That is Vaatu’s influence. As you said, Vaatu is not the spirit of evil but rather chaos and darkness.

    • @helenfoster335
      @helenfoster335 2 года назад +6

      Huh. My understanding was that Raava was order and Vaatu was chaos. But it’s also possible that I just liked that theory because I built headcannons based on it that required both Raava and Vaatu to come together in order to achieve balance. As far as “good guys vs bad guys” goes, balance vs imbalance would work better considering that’s the entire theme of the show(s).

  • @alexlannister950

    There's still some confusion about how people got te bendings, but is just that simple: The Lion Turtle gave the people the power of the elements and as we can see people have no technique while using it, people learn the techniques with the original benders : The dragon, sky bison, badgermooles...
    And this knowledge was forgotten through time just as the knowledge of Raava herself.
    So the Avatar State can be interpreted as Raava being the bridge between the present avatar with their past lives.

    Hey Indonesian here, enjoying your reactions! So ATLA and LOK have had Indonesian cultural things here and there but it is especially hefty in this specific episode. The music you hear right from purple Korra meet the other one is Javanese gamelan, the first avatar's first animal companion called 'mula', which means 'beginning' in Indonesian language, and his former best friend's Jaya in Indonesian/Sanskrit means 'glory', the 2 portals look like Kelimutu Lake, also the Airbender tribe's homes look like Papuan huts. Feel a bit teary-eyed seeing and hearing those things...

    There are some Ghibli callbacks on this episode! The bridge to the oasis is a reference to the bridge to the bath house in Spirited Away, guarded by a spirit who saw through the girl's disguise because he smelled a human. Also Wan's animal companion, is a reference to Ashitaka's red elk in Princess Mononoke! They look VERY similar and his elk is also his loyal companion through his banishment and adventure with the forest spirits.

    29:00 Fair, but the thing with Aye Aye is like...
    When he said that, it _did_ occur to me that he/everyone only sees them when they've come to _take_ something, or kill something like Mula
    Like living on a property with loose borders, and this stray cat/deer likes to wander around, you see it sometimes, and then you see it in a trap. Maybe you arent there when it happens, maybe you're there to see the "thoughtless" looks of relief and _hunger_ as you either try to stop a group or they drag it away as it struggles and whimpers....
    And then it happens regularly.

    Can't believe I never thought about the parallelism between Wan breaking apart Raava and Vaatu, and how he broke the societal norm of living out in the spirit wilds. With Vaatu becoming free, and more humans leaving to live outside of the lion cities, both creating chaos out of a world that was so ordered. While it isn't inherently a bad thing, humans trying to coexist with spirits, when things get pushed too far things can go way out of wack. Even between chaos and order, a balance must be struck. Love this show.

    That's not what happened with the animation studios btw. Studio Pierrot did the first 6 episodes of Book 2. They buckled under the pressure and pulled out (the level of animation in LoK Konietzko and Di Martino wanted in comparison to the budget was actually very unsustainable - they were animating to the level of an animated feature film, every episode, with a TV budget). So the team went back to Studio Mir - who previously quit because their animators were pulling too many all-nighters - and Studio Mir decided they'd take it up again because "it's their show". It's the legacy of ATLA, which was what catapulted Studio Mir to success in the first place. Together Studio Mir and the Konietzko/Di Martino team laid down some new rules and change of arrangements to reduce the load on animators. Further changes were made in later seasons to progressively lessen the toll on animators. Even then they were still pulling all-nighters, but they could tolerate it and know it had an end date.
    And pretty much everyone involved agreed after Korra that they won't try to do something like this again.

They also did Voltron: Legendary Defender, another great series you guys should check out....and this was the first voice work of actor Steven Yeun, best known as Glenn from The Walking Dead. Any sane person would’ve done the same if they truly believed their life was in danger. It would be the same as if 4 guys approached you for a lighter in a dark alley. You should either run or find a weapon and prepare yourself. Best case scenario, it was a misunderstanding and they back off, worse case, you don't make it home that night. Honestly the more I think about it, Wan really comes off as the bad guy in this scenario. He denies them food with no explanation and then tries killing them. There is a difference between having the power of an element and being a bender. If you are born with an element you are not immediately a bender. You need to be trained. That is why the guy said he used fire like an extention of himself. So Wan became the first bender by learning from the dragon. This is also why Kitara said she wasn't a bender yet when Aang called he a water bender in the beginning of season one of ATLAB.
    It also makes some kind of mythological sense why fire was the first. Because of fire humanity was able to adapt and take over nature. Also many myths around the world have a story about humans or a God stealing fire and giving it to humanity.
