The concept of mini-retirement changed my life. I'm no longer waiting for some retirement paradise when I'm 65. It helps to know how to fund the lifestyle. You know, making money while you sip that piña colada by the beach does help. I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise.
Well said Michael. That's exactly it. Most people are waiting...for a certain amount of money in the bank, which based on the cost of living, sadly that 'goal post' keeps moving. So stop waiting and find a more affordable place to live, if possible.

Hi Debbie! Your video helped me so much. I am in a life shift right now which at sometimes, feels like a crisis, and I am searching for an end to this level of stress that is just not acceptable to me anymore. I'm 57, left my job for health reasons as my body would just not do it anymore. You hit on something so relevant to many of us - this living in lack and the level of stress it causes around money is almost toxic. You gave some great ideas here and I just want to thank you so much.
You could actually become a "move to Bali" rep. An ambassador to people wishing to take the big step but needing "in person help". Just a suggestion, since most of us don't have family or friends in Bali.
Relocation is the best thing I've done in my life with my family, I have 3 big children and in year 2022, we temporarily moved to Chiangmai from Singapore. I couldn't put down in words how much we've growth in terms of mindset, how much this move had opened up our world of possibilities for my family. My husband has to go back to SG to work for a few months and fly to and fro, I have to learn independence with my 3 children but I want to say it is the best thing I've done in my life for myself and my kids. Thank you for your sharing, I have so much to agree with you!
Congrats to you and your family for taking the leap to see 'what other kind of life can we have that best fits our family needs'...and you did it! So happy for you. For sure, Thailand is one of those other places I would have lived. Thank you so much for sharing your story. If you had a RUclips channel, I would follow you...just saying :)

The idea of moving at any age ..., that it is never too late gives me the strength to hang in there. Your mom's and your videos are much appreciated. THANK YOU for sharing. Much love to you both, diana
Would love to see more of your life in Bali, your neighbourhood, your day to day life and the good and the bad of living in Bali. Really enjoyed watching your mom and your videos.
Gone from broke in the U.S. and injured, to wealthy in Central America, to broke now and injured, but have come to realize I have everything I need. Has been quite a journey and growth in the realization as to what one truly needs. Thank you for bringing this to our intention. Congrats to you, your mom and friend!
I’m a former project manager and now retired. A project always has a beginning and an end. If there are no other demand for new projects the project manager is the first to go It’s the nature of the beast unfortunately but true. I can certainly relate to your experience. ❤ There’s always another adventure good or bad. Less is more from my experience. Life is full of phases which includes change more or less. Good for you to take the step of faith to relocate to Bali. I may be your neighbor someday 😂 You don’t do your nails anymore…..love it …. you adapted and made the best of it. The past decisions are 20-20 as we all know. The lesson for me is to not beat myself up over decisions that turned out to have a negative impact. God bless you and your new project ❤️
Such a great age to be doing what you're doing! And same for mom 🤣 Your style and energy is fantastic, keep making lots of content, if you have time, we'll all enjoy and support you!!!
Hi Debbie, You are giving and so open and at ease with yourself. Your sharing will help many people, including me! Thanks for the book suggestions especially. I have a sweet friend now going through a layoff and I will be sharing your video with her.
You are so welcome. Tell your friend to focus on removing (if she is) any emotion of the layoff. It's not because of her value. In other words, don't associate the layoff with unvaluable. And I get losing a job is an opportunity to grieve...but only do it for a short period of time. Then move on to the next thing you are destined for because it's time to expand. ;) love to you both! P.S. I'm editing this because I just read a comment below from another viewer and she said it perfectly: "I moved from Hong Kong to the U.S. Living in a different culture has significantly expanded my mind, increaed my curiosity and my resilence. It gives me a larger perspective to appreciate being a human being. I wish more people will try that. Just traveling to a place for a few weeks can't get you there."
Meditation, Gratitude, Healthy Foods and i believe Relationship is very important too. You are fortunate that your relationship with your mother is good.
Love your video. You are so right. Gratitude is everything. I’m a follower of Abraham Hicks and still haven’t gotten the gratitude part down yet, but I’m working on it and will never give up. And healthy eating is so important. Great job.
Yes, I listen to Abraham Hicks every night while I'm doing my yoga. This helps me let go of the day, finding balance, and present to gratitude that I can listen to Abraham on my ipad. That helps me so much!
This sounds so familiar to me!!!!! Why can't I stop working for money in my late 70ties?? Habitually fulfilling a duty, hesitant to work towards more fulfilling goals. The older the more stuck in old habits and doubts about making radical changes. Choosing familiarity over the unknown changes and new chances. Have to change my mindset AND DO IT!!! Thanks for this powerful reminder. Best wishes!!!
Nice of you to share your experience which is quite similar to mine. I'm 71 and retired in the Philippines. I would love to visit Bali some day ! I've subscribed to your channel so I can get to know more about Bali. Thanks & God Bless !
Well done Linda! Am so happy for you! You had the guts to do it & it paid off. Am sure Debbie is happy to have you close. Having barbq with your favorite cousin!
Great to hear that you made it and overcame your fears to change. It's a nice role model example for me to cure my "Just One More Year" syndrome. I agree that living abroad has advantages which I am already harnessing whiles still working. There are beautiful locations around the world to retire to and one or some of them will become my destiny, too. Unfortunately exotic retirement desttinations don't solve one's problems per se. One still has to do the hard work to mentally transition and this process will remain indepedent of location.
100% well said. There was that for the first year, but it was my own hang ups. Later (much later) will be doing a video on how AND how long it took to shed my western mental attachments.

Subscribed. I lived in LA + OC for about 30 years, now in Las Vegas (at about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost). I'm trying to leave the US, and Bali is looking like a good fit for me. I meditate and am real clear about the importance of proper mental hygiene, as you discuss. Looking forward to practical info. I am thrilled to see that you can source fresh veggies and maintain healthy eating, which looked problematic to me when I study other countries. I also took care of my mom (moving her to CA from the east) toward the end of her life, so I know how fulfilling that is. Thanks for your story!
Thank you for your video. I watched your video with your mom. I'm your mom's age and retired at 78 from being a traveling social worker working in mental health with people in crisis. I loved my work. After I retired I traveled around the states for two years in an rv. I have become a minimalist and live in an rv park high in the mountains in New Mexico. While in college in my 40's and 50's I lived in Alaska for 16 years, 12 of those on a boat I bought. Now my world has shrunk and I'm faced with boredom. However, I have been at peace on my mountain. I have no debt and live comfortably off my social security. Stress has returned slowly due to our new politics so I am considering a possible relocation. I'm exploring different videos and am open to new cultures. I would appreciate learning what part of Bali you and your mom live in and if you really like the area. I will look for your upcoming videos, hopefully with your mom as partner. Thank you. Tam
Hello Tam :) you sound like my kind of gal with your worldly view and open or change. We live in Seminyak but I recommend north part of Bali to be in the areas where it's less crowded. Check out my 'how to retire in Bali' to get an idea of the best way to see if this island meets your values. All the best to you!
I was living in the UK and moved to France because I met my French partner..certainly not cheaper than the UK but stuff is better quality ! But now a decade on I’m learning a lot of French folk want to leave here…retire or just move to Thailand/Vietnam even some African countries with historic links to France all because of the cost of living..so we’re thinking of similar things. There’s nothing left for me in the UK. So good for you and your mother.. you are making beautiful memories that you will treasure forever ❤
That's exactly how I felt about the US. I once said (living in LA) why would I live anywhere else? Then I did. We can pivot our lives as life pivots anyway. We need to take care of ourselves. Good for you to be in the discovery phase of where your new home is.
Thank you for this video - so glad you put it out there! We are selling our home and everything we own and retiring . Bali is first on our list as we slow-travel to find out where to stay! If you have any recommendations for where to stay in Bali (we are from US) it would be so appreciated! You are changing lives - how great that you helped your mom to have a new adventure!
Hi Amy, I would recommend first staying in Bali for 2-3 weeks to see if you like it. It's not perfect, but because I'm from the US, whenever something goes awry, I forgive the situation instantly because it's not my country. lol. I would go on Airbnb and book 1 week stays in these areas: Seminyak (beachy), Umalas (inland a little), Tabanan (mountains). I'm going to do a video on how to live in Bali. Actually working on it this week. Stay tuned.
it would be fun if you do some day in the life content and with your mom too. Your story is really interesting and it would be great to learn more about Bali, the beach towns, culture, costs of things, grocery stores, meals you make, things like that.
@retiredlifeinBali do you struggle with the language? Does everyone speak english? What about making friends? I worry the most about the social aspect as a 40 year old guy.
@@adammorra3813 I've learned a little bit of the language. It's not very hard to learn key words. Many people here know English though and there's always Google Translate to help out if need be. Never had a problem. I've made friends and the amount of expats here, it's pretty easy. You will do just fine being a 40 year old here. Many expat facebook groups to learn about specific stuff and find your tribe. :)
I left the states in 2015 and moved to Ireland and my friends said I was brave. Because of the cost of living, I didn't think I was brave because I did it out of necessity. When Ireland didn't work out because of visa issues, my immigration officer told me that I would need to leave. I asked her to give me one month and I immediately got on RUclips searching for visa friendly countries. I found Thailand and more videos later, I found Chiang Mai, So I packed up and am loving and living in Chiang Mai for 6 years now. I now have my retirement visa and live comfortably on my social security with money to save. I love your videos because I love hearing other American's happy retirement stories. Thank you!
omg Patricia! So amazing, love your spirit to keep going and moving on. Don't look back, stay 'brave' and live your best life! You inspire me so much. You really need to share your story on a RUclips...if you are open I would love to interview you. we could do a zoom call. Let me know if you are open to this. send me an email: zendenexperience@gmail.com :) Happy New Year!
Your story is so positive and I really appreciate you sharing it. I'm 81 and live IN Australia. I have been to Bali three times when younger and would like to know where you are living. I heard Sanur is good for expats although I love Ubud I was last there in 1990 so it will be very different now. I have booked for next year to see if I could live there full time. Again thanks for sharing.
I've been to Bali four times, first time in around 2010, last time was last year - Ubud has really changed in that time, so busy, crowded, and so much more traffic, much harder to walk around. However we stayed just a bit out of Ubud this time, and peace can still be found with bars, restaurants, co-working spaces and guest houses scattered among the rice fields along foot paths only accessible by scooters. Things are changing all the time though as more people move there so it is going to get more crowded.
🥰watching your blog makes me more braver to just take a leap and move away from 🇬🇧. I’m looking into Huahin Thailand . Good luck to all of us for our new adventures.
OMG, yes! Great area! Stay strong for YOU and you will be just fine. I didn't have this in my video but consider F.E.A.R. = False Evidence Appearing Real. Just saying. You got this!
Debbie, thanks, your insight without the hype of good or bad here or there makes a world of difference. Every place has its positive vibes if we look for them. I'm sure it's everywhere in Bali!
Liked your video. As a single woman who quit job at 50, over a year ago, I feel I can relate. I might go back to work later, but I do feel like I am having an issue with a scarcity mindset.. I need to switch like you did and enjoy my life more. I set aside some money to spend, but it is very challenging to just spend when you don't have regular income.
Thank you for your comment :) This is exactly what I was saying, but now I shift that perspective by looking around the house and seeing not one ounce of evidence of scarcity. I have everything I need. Lacking nothing. It's like my mantra. Shifting my focus from scarcity to expanding myself. Like trying on a new 'me' without the history of how I used to be.
I am an Indonesian but became Australian citizen...currently I live in USA. I am thinking of moving to Bali next year because the cost of living in Perth Australia is really high now. I have never been to Bali as I was originally from Medan. But I feel a calling of my soul to start over in Bali next year.
Way to turn your life and thinking around. Very well done and awesome that your mom was able to join you. From the snippets of her in this video she's looking great and seems to be enjoying it. I am probably one of the very few Australians that have never been to Bali, but it is on the bucket list. I do, however, live in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which I imagine is not dissimilar. I've been here for 18 years and my only plan is to stay here forever. Gratitude is huge, there is so much to be grateful for every day. I also like to say hello to every one I meet in my village and also say hello to complete strangers. I feel grateful when they return the greeting or strike up a conversation. I need to work on the meditation but thanks for giving me the nudge :)
WOW!! What an incredible video! Thank you so much for sharing your journey and speaking out loud the truth about your experiences. it was very moving listening to your story, and the lessons you shared were also very helpful. I moved to the Philippines, also about 6 years ago, and even though we are in different places, there's a similar process and journey we went through. Yes, it's not easy giving up all your "stuff" and adapting to a foreign country during the Covid Pandemic, but the rewards far outweigh any inconvenience. Even my worse days here, are not as bad as the worst days I experienced in the US, and I am so grateful for my life now. It's like a huge weight or several weights were lifted off my shoulders and brain, and finally living a life "without struggle". Sometimes it seems kind of surreal.
Exactly! Well said! Thank you so much for your comment. Excellent points here especially about "it's a huge weight or several weights lifted off my shoulders and brain and finally living a life" - and to add to that 'a life you deserve, I deserve, we all deserve'. :)
I moved from Hong Kong to the U.S. Living in a different culture has significantly expanded my mind, increaed my curiosity and my resilence. This is very interesting what you have to say and what you do. I fell in love with Bali the first time I visited it. I live in Hamburg Germany and have two more years to work, then I’ll retire. I’m looking for places where it’s nicer than in Hamburg, Germany especially during winter time. So I’m planing long time stays in Bali. If you can show more of Bali, especially places for retirees in their sixties, that would be great. 🎉❤ Thank you very much for sharing your story and the story of your mom. I specially like the Balinese interior design.
@@retiredlifeinBali Thank you, Debbie, for your answer. I watched your video when you renovated your villa and found it very exciting. I think as an interior designer you are in the right place. The design of the houses is what defines Bali and why I like Bali so much better than, for example, Thailand. I also really like the Balinese furniture.

Inspiring to hear you were able to retire early at such young age in Asia. I also long for early retirement in Asia, Mexico, South America, and San Diego, rotating to different countries every one to three months to really experience each place.
Lots of expats moving to SEA. Im fortunate to be a dual citizen and have a goal to go back in the Philippines at 55. Oh my goodness , My husband is 78 and me , 73. We both still have to work and don’t have savings but do have a house and cottages to rent out . I think we would be wealthy there in Bali if we sold , but yes , the children are 2 hours away from us and see them often . So , in order to be near them , we just carry on and on ,,, and work. You and your Mom actually did the absolute right thing . Life there sounds divine . Maybe show us a food prep . People , including me love cooking demo’s as well .
Thank you for sharing my wife and I have been tossing around the idea of moving out the country. We both retired early and we are making it barely. We have a okay pension between us for the US. But are limited to what we can do because of bills.

So glad I found your channel! I am obsessed with retiring and am wracking my brain to find a way to do it earlier than 62-65. Dr. Joe Dispenza seems to have an approach to changing your life/mind/thinking/feeling is very similar to what you are talking about. It's so inspiring to hear you overcome your small mindedness, living in a small room, and taking action to expand yourself/mind. I have done some good inner work but it's time to take it to the next level and overcome the current level of small mindedness. His books are amazing, I am doing his mediations every day, the stories of people changing their lives and health on his website (and RUclips channel) are amazing. I can't wait to see you and your mom evolve in Bali. Your decor is fire 🔥For future content, would love to see some day in the life, some interviews with other retirees, hear stories of you (any other expats) overcoming challenges (like you said Bali has "slapped you so many times"), how expats have handled health/hospital stays, what do people with pre-existing health concerns do (I hear health insurance is crazy expensive or maybe cannot get it with pre-existing conditions).
You are so right about Dr. Dispenza. He says in order to change your personality, you have to change your personal reality. I had to change my small room and put myself in a completely different reality (Bali). By the way, here's the thing about healthcare here. It's not perfect, but it's doable and if something really bad happens, Thailand and Singapore are only 3 hours away which have state of the art (Thailand by the way is super cheap). I have a friend diagnosed with cancer a few years back, went to Thailand and she's been cancer free for 3 years. Did I mention how cheap it is?
@@retiredlifeinBali Aaaaaaannnd Beautiful!!! I'm doing my Dr. Joe mediations everyday and excited to see what comes in from the unknown. I had breast cancer 10 yrs ago, so healthcare is a concern for sure. Thanks so much for the info 🙏✨

Hi Sunshine! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Hope you are well. Love to you!!
Thank you for not devouring the corpses of animals who did not want to die. Lovely to see a kind, plant-based life style.
P.S. I'm editing this because I just read a comment below from another viewer and she said it perfectly:
"I moved from Hong Kong to the U.S. Living in a different culture has significantly expanded my mind, increaed my curiosity and my resilence. It gives me a larger perspective to appreciate being a human being. I wish more people will try that. Just traveling to a place for a few weeks can't get you there."

Have to change my mindset
AND DO IT!!!
Thanks for this powerful reminder.
Best wishes!!!
All the best to you too Linda. You sound like you have a clear head and know what to do. Awareness is 95% and action is only 5%. You can do it!

Thanks for watching!

And it's ORGANIC! The veggies taste amazing here! So happy for you...and thank you for sharing where you are and where you want to go...love the plan!

Wow, my first! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! :) love to you!
I think I will come soon. Thank you for this video!!
Great video. It was refreshing to listen to different perspectives and your lived experience.
Thank you for your feedback. I will certainly include your ideas going forward. :)

Thank you!

I live in Seminyak...but most of the places (including Sanur) welcomes new expats. Seriously, I can't explain enough how welcome it is here.
Well said. Thank you!
Awesome 👍
I am an Indonesian but became Australian citizen...currently I live in USA. I am thinking of moving to Bali next year because the cost of living in Perth Australia is really high now. I have never been to Bali as I was originally from Medan. But I feel a calling of my soul to start over in Bali next year.
I watched your mom’s stream first then yours. Liked it and yours. Your lives sound idyllic……There is no end to more.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I like Thailand too...and maybe one day, may move there. We can house swap..lol.
Congratulations on living your best life. Bali Bagus!!!!!!

The Murphy book was a breakthrough for me also! Loved that book!

Hi jajazmi ;) noted and will do! All of my best to you!
Know the feeling, there have been at least 3 houses we had sold that had subsequently increased in prices many fold in short spaces of time! Life is too short to look back in regrets! Forward!

Hi Maria, not hard at all to get a visa...but best to speak to a visa agent here. Check out my "how to retire in Bali' video which has some steps I used to move here (or anywhere in the world).
I am so happy you answered. Yes I am checking all your videos too. Just spoke yesterday to a friend who moved to the Philippines years ago and she said it is better to star in Thailand (also thevtrip is much cheaper from LA )and from there go everywhere to see where it would be better from our situation. What is your thought on that? Oh another question since I have been vanlife for years too in Mexico most of the time also for the economic. I am starting the selling of everything to be able to buy a van somewhere in Asia. Is this easy for a someone who is not from there? Thank you so much for your help. Say hi to your mom.
@@MariaFlorencio-b7z Hi Maria, happy holidays :) Thailand is a great option, still affordable. To be honest, I've never seen a van in Bali other than delivery trucks. Maybe there are in Thailand. Have you checked vanlife Asia vlogs?

Thank you for sharing your story on your life change, sometimes getting up and moving to a new location can help get out of the blinker vision we get.
