Hi Debbie! Your video helped me so much. I am in a life shift right now which at sometimes, feels like a crisis, and I am searching for an end to this level of stress that is just not acceptable to me anymore. Relocation is the best thing I've done in my life with my family, I have 3 big children and in year 2022, we temporarily moved to Chiangmai from Singapore. I couldn't put down in words how much we've growth in terms of mindset, how much this move had opened up our world of possibilities for my family. My husband has to go back to SG to work for a few months and fly to and fro, I have to learn independence with my 3 children but I want to say it is the best thing I've done in my life for myself and my kids. Congrats to you and your family for taking the leap to see 'what other kind of life can we have that best fits our family needs'...and you did it! So happy for you. For sure, Thailand is one of those other places I would have lived. Thank you so much for sharing your story. If you had a RUclips channel, I would follow you...just saying :)
Love your video. You are so right. Gratitude is everything. I’m a follower of Abraham Hicks and still haven’t gotten the gratitude part down yet, but I’m working on it and will never give up. And healthy eating is so important. Great job.

Hi Debbie, You are giving and so open and at ease with yourself. Your sharing will help many people, including me! Thanks for the book suggestions especially. I have a sweet friend now going through a layoff and I will be sharing your video with her.
You are so welcome. Tell your friend to focus on removing (if she is) any emotion of the layoff. It's not because of her value. In other words, don't associate the layoff with unvaluable. And I get losing a job is an opportunity to grieve...but only do it for a short period of time. Then move on to the next thing you are destined for because it's time to expand. ;) love to you both! P.S. I'm editing this because I just read a comment below from another viewer and she said it perfectly: "I moved from Hong Kong to the U.S. Living in a different culture has significantly expanded my mind, increaed my curiosity and my resilence. It gives me a larger perspective to appreciate being a human being. I wish more people will try that. Just traveling to a place for a few weeks can't get you there."
You could actually become a "move to Bali" rep. An ambassador to people wishing to take the big step but needing "in person help". Just a suggestion, since most of us don't have family or friends in Bali.
I'd love to move abroad as a 5 year plan. Mid 40's in the UK. So sick of it here. My country is a joke. I'd love to live somewhere warm with happier, healthier people. I'd love to hear more about how you did it etc etc visas & stuff like that.
Well done Linda! Am so happy for you! You had the guts to do it & it paid off. Am sure Debbie is happy to have you close. Having barbq with your favorite cousin!
I’m a former project manager and now retired. A project always has a beginning and an end. If there are no other demand for new projects the project manager is the first to go It’s the nature of the beast unfortunately but true. I can certainly relate to your experience. ❤ There’s always another adventure good or bad. Less is more from my experience. Life is full of phases which includes change more or less. Good for you to take the step of faith to relocate to Bali. I may be your neighbor someday 😂 You don’t do your nails anymore…..love it …. you adapted and made the best of it. The past decisions are 20-20 as we all know. The lesson for me is to not beat myself up over decisions that turned out to have a negative impact. God bless you and your new project ❤️
Nice of you to share your experience which is quite similar to mine. I'm 71 and retired in the Philippines. I would love to visit Bali some day ! I've subscribed to your channel so I can get to know more about Bali. Thanks & God Bless !
Meditation, Gratitude, Healthy Foods and i believe Relationship is very important too. You are fortunate that your relationship with your mother is good.
Great to hear that you made it and overcame your fears to change. It's a nice role model example for me to cure my "Just One More Year" syndrome. I agree that living abroad has advantages which I am already harnessing whiles still working. There are beautiful locations around the world to retire to and one or some of them will become my destiny, too. Unfortunately exotic retirement desttinations don't solve one's problems per se. One still has to do the hard work to mentally transition and this process will remain indepedent of location.
100% well said. There was that for the first year, but it was my own hang ups. Later (much later) will be doing a video on how AND how long it took to shed my western mental attachments.
Thank you for this video - so glad you put it out there! We are selling our home and everything we own and retiring . Bali is first on our list as we slow-travel to find out where to stay! If you have any recommendations for where to stay in Bali (we are from US) it would be so appreciated! You are changing lives - how great that you helped your mom to have a new adventure!
Hi Amy, I would recommend first staying in Bali for 2-3 weeks to see if you like it. It's not perfect, but because I'm from the US, whenever something goes awry, I forgive the situation instantly because it's not my country. lol. I would go on Airbnb and book 1 week stays in these areas: Seminyak (beachy), Umalas (inland a little), Tabanan (mountains). I'm going to do a video on how to live in Bali. Actually working on it this week. Stay tuned.
@retiredlifeinBali do you struggle with the language? Does everyone speak english? What about making friends? I worry the most about the social aspect as a 40 year old guy.
@@adammorra3813 I've learned a little bit of the language. It's not very hard to learn key words. Many people here know English though and there's always Google Translate to help out if need be. Never had a problem. I've made friends and the amount of expats here, it's pretty easy. You will do just fine being a 40 year old here. Many expat facebook groups to learn about specific stuff and find your tribe. :)
Do you have medical insurance? A breakdown of average costs would be wonderful. We are debt free accept for our house. Would definitely love fory husband to be able to retire & ditch all the stress involved with his job.
Subscribed. I lived in LA + OC for about 30 years, now in Las Vegas (at about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost). I'm trying to leave the US, and Bali is looking like a good fit for me. I meditate and am real clear about the importance of proper mental hygiene, as you discuss. Looking forward to practical info. I am thrilled to see that you can source fresh veggies and maintain healthy eating, which looked problematic to me when I study other countries. I also took care of my mom (moving her to CA from the east) toward the end of her life, so I know how fulfilling that is. Thanks for your story!
Your mom’s RUclips popped up and so we watched it! Good for her! Then we watched your story! Simple living, feeling safe, living in abundance and eating clean and healthy food is perfect! You’ve made a great choice and you have each other. This mof
Hello from Australia. I absolutely :OVE! your videos! Mum's too. You guys are very funny. Please keep those videos coming, its it so inspiring. I'm thinking of moving to Bali too. Much love and Respect, to Both You and Mum. xxx
it would be fun if you do some day in the life content and with your mom too. Your story is really interesting and it would be great to learn more about Bali, the beach towns, culture, costs of things, grocery stores, meals you make, things like that.
Debbie, thanks, your insight without the hype of good or bad here or there makes a world of difference. Every place has its positive vibes if we look for them. I'm sure it's everywhere in Bali!
Gone from broke in the U.S. and injured, to wealthy in Central America, to broke now and injured, but have come to realize I have everything I need. Has been quite a journey and growth in the realization as to what one truly needs. Thank you for bringing this to our intention. Congrats to you, your mom and friend!
WOW!! What an incredible video! Thank you so much for sharing your journey and speaking out loud the truth about your experiences. it was very moving listening to your story, and the lessons you shared were also very helpful. I moved to the Philippines, also about 6 years ago, and even though we are in different places, there's a similar process and journey we went through. Yes, it's not easy giving up all your "stuff" and adapting to a foreign country during the Covid Pandemic, but the rewards far outweigh any inconvenience. Even my worse days here, are not as bad as the worst days I experienced in the US, and I am so grateful for my life now. It's like a huge weight or several weights were lifted off my shoulders and brain, and finally living a life "without struggle". Sometimes it seems kind of surreal.
Exactly! Well said! Thank you so much for your comment. Excellent points here especially about "it's a huge weight or several weights lifted off my shoulders and brain and finally living a life" - and to add to that 'a life you deserve, I deserve, we all deserve'. :)
Liked your video. As a single woman who quit job at 50, over a year ago, I feel I can relate. I might go back to work later, but I do feel like I am having an issue with a scarcity mindset.. I need to switch like you did and enjoy my life more. I set aside some money to spend, but it is very challenging to just spend when you don't have regular income.
Thank you for your comment :) This is exactly what I was saying, but now I shift that perspective by looking around the house and seeing not one ounce of evidence of scarcity. I have everything I need. Lacking nothing. It's like my mantra. Shifting my focus from scarcity to expanding myself. Like trying on a new 'me' without the history of how I used to be.
Your story is so positive and I really appreciate you sharing it. I'm 81 and live IN Australia. I have been to Bali three times when younger and would like to know where you are living. I heard Sanur is good for expats although I love Ubud I was last there in 1990 so it will be very different now. I have booked for next year to see if I could live there full time. Again thanks for sharing.
I've been to Bali four times, first time in around 2010, last time was last year - Ubud has really changed in that time, so busy, crowded, and so much more traffic, much harder to walk around. However we stayed just a bit out of Ubud this time, and peace can still be found with bars, restaurants, co-working spaces and guest houses scattered among the rice fields along foot paths only accessible by scooters. Things are changing all the time though as more people move there so it is going to get more crowded.
I retired at 52 after i got laid off and honestly, I wish I’d done it sooner. The 9-to-5 grind always steals your freedom for a paycheck that barely scratches the surface. My advice? If you’re in your late 30s or early 40s, start saving for FIRE now (Financial Independence, Retire Early.) And if you’re in your 50s, invest smartly and break free from relying on your job. Market trends, like the Trump Effect, have made millions for many, including me. Stay focused, stay consistent, and remember financial freedom is within reach if you make it a priority.
Way to turn your life and thinking around. Very well done and awesome that your mom was able to join you. From the snippets of her in this video she's looking great and seems to be enjoying it. I am probably one of the very few Australians that have never been to Bali, but it is on the bucket list. I do, however, live in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which I imagine is not dissimilar. I've been here for 18 years and my only plan is to stay here forever. Gratitude is huge, there is so much to be grateful for every day. I also like to say hello to every one I meet in my village and also say hello to complete strangers. I feel grateful when they return the greeting or strike up a conversation. I need to work on the meditation but thanks for giving me the nudge :)
🥰watching your blog makes me more braver to just take a leap and move away from 🇬🇧. I’m looking into Huahin Thailand . Good luck to all of us for our new adventures.

Hello. Thank you for sharing your video and your adventure in living. I especially appreciate the books you mentioned. I have now gone to my public library to reserve them. Does your neighborhood have a library? Thanks!
I moved from Hong Kong to the U.S. Living in a different culture has significantly expanded my mind, increaed my curiosity and my resilence. It gives me a larger perspective to appreciate being a human being. I wish more people will try that. Just traveling to a place for a few weeks can't get you there.
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for your inspiration, I just quoted you to another subscriber about her friend that just got laid off. Your words are exactly what I was trying to say, but you are more concise. Thank you :)
Hi Debbie. Thanks alot for sharing your background and move to Bali. Very honest - and yes I recognize the money story… I travel to south India every year as my winter escape coming from Copenhagen. Looking into setting myself up to stay longer in India … thanks for the inspiration. So happy to hear and see your mother came out to Bali as Well.
I came across your mom‘s video and was completely impressed. Such a lovely lady at her age with so much strength and conviction. I now came across your video and also find it very uplifting. You guys are a pair of bookends. Both very lovely. I live in the US and after my wife passed away I was thinking of going to Spain where my family is from. However, taxes are extremely high. I hate taxes. I’m taking my grandson this summer on his vacation to Asia and we were considering going to Bali. Where would you recommend would be a good place to live?
I wouldn’t be so certain selling your house was a mistake. Owning rental property in another country is ( or your own) a challenge and would keep you mentally, emotionally and financially tied up. Not to mention the taxes, repairs, insurance and other unforeseen issues that arise when owning rentals. A good financial advisor should have made your nest egg grow considerably in these last few years while the housing market did not… I sold a beach house in California two years ago and have zero regrets . The freedom from the property taxes alone is a relief not to mention the cost of maintenance. I was in your shoes, not able to afford to live in my own home so I totally get your decision. Also, an equity line or HELOC isn’t a given, you still have to qualify. Your ties to Bali gave you another option. I still live in California , have had a nice rest for two years and am now looking for my next move . Don’t look back, and don’t project what might be homesickness or FOMO on your choice to sell. I’ve never heard of a visa that keeps you from working or volunteering but having a purpose in your life there seems like the answer.
Love this video, came across your mom’s video first and truly inspired by her and then watched yours. I’m 49 now, still working, but can you show places for rent, sake in your price range. Also what about places to stay for the summer. What’s the health system like? Would just love to know more.
Inspiring to hear you were able to retire early at such young age in Asia. I also long for early retirement in Asia, Mexico, South America, and San Diego, rotating to different countries every one to three months to really experience each place.
Your channel is really helpful! I wish you’d cover what healthcare is like for someone over 65. Are there local clinics, hospitals, and specialists? Are there local insurance options? International policies through the AIG and Cigna type companies aren’t a good option for seniors usually. If we can get coverage, preexisting conditions are excluded and the policies are very expensive. Thanks!
I am sorry, there are so many different types of insurances, I don't have any information other than the companies I stated in my last video. Maybe look into Allianz and Prudential. But healthcare system isn't westernized and if you need to live in a place that has state of the art (with affordable living), maybe look at Thailand.
I love your story & even more your mums! ❤ I’ve lived in Asia for 10 years but it was with a big international company. How do you do it with residency, visas etc.
Thank you for sharing, I have a question regarding visa and permanent residence in Bali. I contemplating to movefrom Europe to a more exotique country, but many places won't let you stay more than a certain time. how did you navigate this?
This is very interesting what you have to say and what you do. I fell in love with Bali the first time I visited it. I live in Hamburg Germany and have two more years to work, then I’ll retire. I’m looking for places where it’s nicer than in Hamburg, Germany especially during winter time. So I’m planing long time stays in Bali. If you can show more of Bali, especially places for retirees in their sixties, that would be great. 🎉❤ Thank you very much for sharing your story and the story of your mom. I specially like the Balinese interior design.
@@retiredlifeinBali Thank you, Debbie, for your answer. I watched your video when you renovated your villa and found it very exciting. I think as an interior designer you are in the right place. The design of the houses is what defines Bali and why I like Bali so much better than, for example, Thailand. I also really like the Balinese furniture.
Hello Debbie, good that u did what u did & now u have priceless time with your mum. Yes i wish i did not sell my house too, but we had to do what had to at the time..look forward ok..Post more 'relax videos' of u going around, u don't even have to speak or explain. Enough, that u are sharing. Cheers, from Malaysia.
Know the feeling, there have been at least 3 houses we had sold that had subsequently increased in prices many fold in short spaces of time! Life is too short to look back in regrets! Forward!
Hi Debbie I can really relate to your energy and attitude ❤ I’m 58 still in Sydney Australia and destined to follow a similar path 😊 I would love a friend / some guidance and your kind eyes heart and words are inspirational Thankyou and take care
Thanks for sharing your philosophy and journey in such an honest way! I would be living in asia at this time of life as well but my partner struggles with the heat so stuck with 4 (rather cold) seasons in an expensive western setting it would seem!
You are generous to make sure any life changes work for you and your partner. By the way, I love your handle name: MajorDrama1- I think my mom may have had MajorDrama, which is why it was not available. lol. I'm kidding. She says that term all the time...in a cheeky way though. :)
Love your video. And the video with your mother. Interesting to hear that you manage on 1100 dollars a month. My plan is to move to Thailand but Bali is I nice alternative.
I would like to consider moving to Bali but I have a dog. I do have alot of clothes and stuff. I was wondering if people ship there stuff there if it's realistic or not. Great information on your video!
Hi again, I think you commented on another video and I answered this but not really easy to ship things to Bali. I recommend letting go if you can, or store for 6 months to see if this is something you want to do in your future.
Thank you for sharing my wife and I have been tossing around the idea of moving out the country. We both retired early and we are making it barely. We have a okay pension between us for the US. But are limited to what we can do because of bills.
Lots of expats moving to SEA. Im fortunate to be a dual citizen and have a goal to go back in the Philippines at 55. Just like Indonesia, has a low cost of living and have more things to do , the white beaches and the mountains to hike. I feel stress free every time i go there. You found your paradise, keep the channel going.
Hello from CA & many thanks 4 your wonderful videos on you & your mom moving 2 Bali! I lived in Bali in my 30s in Ubud. Now being treated for skin cancer requiring Moh's surgery from years of overexposure to the sun without sunscreen. Love your designs in Bali, isn't it amazing you could carry it out, so hard 2 do in the US unless wealthy. Indonesia is a great place 2 travel or live if you are a woman & artistically inclined. I studied dance & batik. Interesting comment about 10 year vs 20 year lease. Doubt u will return but you never know where life takes us. I never thought I would travel 4 years covering Bali, Java, Borneo, Sumba, Timor & New Guinea. Selemat Jalan.
I was living in the UK and moved to France because I met my French partner..certainly not cheaper than the UK but stuff is better quality ! But now a decade on I’m learning a lot of French folk want to leave here…retire or just move to Thailand/Vietnam even some African countries with historic links to France all because of the cost of living..so we’re thinking of similar things. There’s nothing left for me in the UK. So good for you and your mother.. you are making beautiful memories that you will treasure forever ❤
That's exactly how I felt about the US. I once said (living in LA) why would I live anywhere else? Then I did. We can pivot our lives as life pivots anyway. We need to take care of ourselves. Good for you to be in the discovery phase of where your new home is.
A really inspiring video! There are quite a few questions below which have been liked but no answer added. They're topics I'm interested in too eg can a foreigner buy property in Bali. Is it possible you can look through and give your thoughts?
Just subscribed thanks to you mother (thanks to you helping her make that video). So, let us see more of you, how you eat at home, take your time with food since everyone watching eats daily lol, let us see what you eat in restaurants, let us see walks on the beach, in nature, in the "city". Let us know the price of fruit, veggies etc... desserts... I'd love to see ex-pats getting together and enjoying what some of us can only dream of. Blessings from Canada.
Oh my goodness , My husband is 78 and me , 73. We both still have to work and don’t have savings but do have a house and cottages to rent out . I think we would be wealthy there in Bali if we sold , but yes , the children are 2 hours away from us and see them often . So , in order to be near them , we just carry on and on ,,, and work. "I moved from Hong Kong to the U.S. Living in a different culture has significantly expanded my mind, increaed my curiosity and my resilence. It gives me a larger perspective to appreciate being a human being. I wish more people will try that. Just traveling to a place for a few weeks can't get you there."

And do not have to go out of Indonesia

What area in Bali would you recommend to rent long term
You could actually become a "move to Bali" rep. An ambassador to people wishing to take the big step but needing "in person help". Just a suggestion, since most of us don't have family or friends in Bali.
Just came across this channel. Positive vibe and good story telling!! I am planning to start my nomad life soon. Bali is definitely in my list..
I'd love to move abroad as a 5 year plan. Mid 40's in the UK. So sick of it here. My country is a joke. I'd love to live somewhere warm with happier, healthier people. I'd love to hear more about how you did it etc etc visas & stuff like that.
Hi, I just released a video with this info...check out the channel for the last video if you haven't yet. :)
Thanks for sharing your story.
Well done Linda! Am so happy for you! You had the guts to do it & it paid off. Am sure Debbie is happy to have you close. Having barbq with your favorite cousin!
You guys cracked it! Congratulations. It gives me hope too.
Thank you ;)
Love both your mums and your stories and wish u only the best! Ofc u will do brilliantly in bali...❤❤❤❤
Meditation, Gratitude, Healthy Foods and i believe Relationship is very important too. You are fortunate that your relationship with your mother is good.
yes!!! thank you for including relationship too. 100%
I love this! You did a wonderful thing for yourself and your mom!
Thank you for not devouring the corpses of animals who did not want to die. Lovely to see a kind, plant-based life style.
Stay tuned.
Great video. It was refreshing to listen to different perspectives and your lived experience.
Amazing journey, thank you for sharing. You have convinced me to move in next to you!
haha! Thank you:)
Thanks for sharing your life, and your recommendations.
Thank you for sharing your experience...looks like you're accomplishing some real soul goals...new subbie here.

And it's ORGANIC! The veggies taste amazing here! So happy for you...and thank you for sharing where you are and where you want to go...love the plan!

Debbie, thanks, your insight without the hype of good or bad here or there makes a world of difference. Every place has its positive vibes if we look for them. I'm sure it's everywhere in Bali!
Well said. Thank you!
The Murphy book was a breakthrough for me also! Loved that book!
Awesome 👍
I live in Seminyak...but most of the places (including Sanur) welcomes new expats. Seriously, I can't explain enough how welcome it is here.
So done with 9-5, its Depressing!
I have 5 more years and I can’t wait!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I like Thailand too...and maybe one day, may move there. We can house swap..lol.
Thankyou for this video, I too am thinking of moving, you are truly an inspiration ❤

Wow! Wish you had a RUclips I could watch. Sounds fascinating!
Thank you for your input. I had fomo, now it's being present to life as it is.
Love the idea of rotating every few months. :)
I’ve lived in Asia for 10 years but it was with a big international company. How do you do it with residency, visas etc.
Hello, look at my other video "how to retire in bali" that should help with the steps to moving and retiring here. All the best to you!
Thank you for sharing, I have a question regarding visa and permanent residence in Bali. I contemplating to movefrom Europe to a more exotique country, but many places won't let you stay more than a certain time. how did you navigate this?
Love it! Congratulations
Hi Claudia :) thank you for the ideas. I certainly will share more about Bali for retirees.
Hi jajazmi ;) noted and will do! All of my best to you!
Know the feeling, there have been at least 3 houses we had sold that had subsequently increased in prices many fold in short spaces of time! Life is too short to look back in regrets! Forward!

Excactly! You are smart and lucky for the dual citizenship. Best to you!
Love your videos. How did you furnish your home in Bali?
There are local shops that make the furniture. Most everything in my house is made in Bali.
You can take on some interior design projects in Bali, specially, among the expats. Thanks for sharing.
Unfortunately I am not able to work in Bali. It goes against the rules here.

Just subscribed thanks to you mother (thanks to you helping her make that video). So, let us see more of you, how you eat at home, take your time with food since everyone watching eats daily lol, let us see what you eat in restaurants, let us see walks on the beach, in nature, in the "city".
