One thing that strikes me is how small the angle of attack is throughout the display (except for the slow pass, of course). This means that there is plenty more capability in the Gripen, which is not displayed. One reason for the small angle of attack is that the Gripen flight control system is optimized for minimum drag at all times. This means that Gripen in many cases can outperform other aircraft with on paper better thrust to weight ratio.
I'm watching this and I'm reminded of Smaug, the Terrible! Looks exactly like a Medieval (Swedish) Dragon from up front, sometimes, specially when it's diving, flipping those canards! Absolutely beautiful machine! 😁👌👏🤙

Wow, this is cool. It extremely rare for me (first time) to stumble upon a comment under my own video from a Kolthof(f) that isn't my younger brother😂😂. Welcome I guess XD... . Where are you from? I'm living close to Amsterdam in the Netherlands! And yes the JAS-39 Gripen is a fantastic aircraft. Hope to see it again!!
@@baskolthof Hi again! I live in Sweden, so I usually see a Gripen flying by once or twice each year. Nothing like when growing up in the eighties though. During the cold war era we used to see pairs of Viggens thundering by at low altitude almost every week. Geographical proximity to the Soviet Union made us have a really strong military defense back then. Lot's of aircraft for such a small population! My side of the family tree have stayed in Sweden and kept the same name ever since our ancestor, a German mining engineer by the name of Henric Kolthoff moved here in the early 1600's. Or at least, so I've been told. Are you and your brother somehow related to the Dutch-American scientist Izaak Kolthoff?
Carving like an ice skater through the air. Best turning rate of all fighter jets in da world!! It's a mystery why the Finnish Airforce chosed the clumsy expensive F35 instead of this ballerina-like assassin...
I think the E/F versions deserve a new name. And I really hope that is what we get here in Canada. We'd AT LEAST have a plane that spends its time flying, instead of getting fixed and tweaked 90% of the time. The F-35 is SLOW compared, can't keep up its max speed for long without starting to fall apart and STEALTH is now being implemented electronically more and more, without the need for all of the material specs. And we do NOT need a vertical take-off plane, which makes HALF of the funding we provided wasted in advance. . It's also WAY too expensive for us and even the Americans are looking to replace it already. Their idea was sound, but the end price and lack of function due to technical problems that seem to NEVER get fixed without creating new ones make it unreliable.
I don't know for sure. When I looked it up I saw there were a couple accidents with stall. They mentioned a ground proximity warning system but not a stall warning system. One thing is for sure: The pilot must be very cautious!
@@mohauvundla7391 Really? Any modern aircraft have stall warning, from passenger jets to fighters. They just beep a bit more often on a fighter like Gripen because the pilot takes it to the limit and then some. ;-)
@@henrikkoberstein the aircraft can stall, but it does not have a stall warning as i have said. The flight control system ensures that the aircraft does not get into stall conditions by limiting your control authority in certain conditions.

Well, it can carry a lot more weapons than the F 35 (and I think the F 22 as well) and is not limited to Swedish made stuff but actually compatible with everything NATO-made, including Mavericks, Hellfires et c. so... yeah, probably able to take out enemy aircraft (and navy, and army)... It aint winning any dopfights by doin a bunch of rolls and flying upside down. Make some real maneuvers please. Must suck being a swedish air force pilot and seeing all the other countries making some crazy low speed maneuvers. Guess they are just scared of ending up in a spin or something.
I have to say that this year's Gripen solo demo had more slow flight in it (second half of the show). I will upload it in a couple of weeks (it was a evening show with an amazing sunset view).
This pilot is ready to defend his territory with one of the best maneuvers ever. That movement gives me a head swing and I am not in the jet.
