- I’ve decided to break down this dresser makeover into a series of videos because there is just too much information to share in one video!
Part 1: In this video I remove the worn out stain from the top and legs of my dresser to get it ready for some creative paint finishes! I share my process and tips for removing the old stain, this video focuses on sanding. I use both an electric palm sander and do some sanding by hand. Feel free to share your tips for removing stain in the comments below!

Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ruclips.net/user/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.
Deanna is a good teacher. I have a desk I want to work on. It was FREE, left on the side of the road and nothing is wrong with it! it just has a few scratches on the top of it. So I hope to use a wood stain on it and make it all new again and change out the drawer knobs. :D
Love your non nonsense approach to tutorials without all the “extra” yack. THANK YOU! 😁 I love sanding with my power tools. It’s relaxing and allows me to slow down and just focus on the project and think about other stuff. (Or not) 😀
Thanks so much for watching!
Yes, I agree. I like how she just gets to the point and makes it easy. I took notes, too!

Hi Deanna, by far your videos are the best!! I loved how you broke each step down, you explained it in detail, and you gave some trouble shooting issues and how to fix those! Bravo!!! this is what I needed as a newbie to understand the entire process. I definately have more confidence in my knowledge of what to do. thank you for your very professional no nonsense tutorial. I subscribed immediately! Great job and look forward to more of your teaching! Thanks so much!

Deanna, I couldn't find part 2 because I would like your advice about applying wood stain. Thank you for answering our questions.
Hi Anna, here is a link to the whole mini series. Sorry, but I do not have a video about wood stain yet. ruclips.net/p/PLl1zRXnhL5t-m3kzAyHmWyHb2zARa-ZzK
I see your really cute workers came to help.😂😂😂😂😂❤❤
They are the best helpers ❤️
You have a lot more patience than I do
Thank you for this tutorial! I just bought a desk that is solid, but the finish is shot. I want to continue using the desk while removing the stain and finish. Can this be done in stages and, if so, what would you recommend as a way to protect the unfinished parts?
I am using similar sander but it’s leaving behind heavy lines in wood and not removing stain. Any advice?
I've been trying to sand down a nightstand/small dresser with an orbital sander and 80 grit sandpaper today-- but I've spent like an hour and a half on the top and the stain still isn't all the way off. Do I need to apply pressure? My sander's instruction manual says not to apply any pressure but I feel like I must be doing something wrong!
Wow! That is some tough stain. Sounds like you are doing everything right, I do not apply pressure. Have you been changing out the sandpaper as it gets worn down? Sometimes the stain is really thick/hard/bonded to the surface and it just takes time and you have to get a fresh piece of paper more often, maybe this will help?
Can you link to part 2? I see that you said you posted it but I can't find it in your video library. Thanks so much!
Here’s a link to all 4 videos! Thanks for watching ruclips.net/p/PLl1zRXnhL5t-m3kzAyHmWyHb2zARa-ZzK
I need some tips. I’ve been working on this desk for a couple days now. I’ve been sanding it, nothing comes off and it looks exactly how it did before. I am using an 80 grit sandpaper and a palm sander. I do it exactly how you do in this video. Nothing seems to work. I’ve only had a couple spots here n’s there where I can see the wood coming through. Anyone have tips or know why?
One question, why no punch holes in the sandpaper? How will the dust bag collect dust if there aren't holes in the sand paper?
This is a good tip, thanks for sharing!
Top Notch
Do I need to wear a mask when sanding a project like this indoors?
I wish I could sand my dresser top in 20 minutes😅 No idea what I'm doing wrong, but I've been sanding for over an hour, or maybe two, with a 80 grid sandpaper on the same machine and there is only a few spots that show the bare wood so far. I'm about to give up and just paint it 😢
How do you know when the sandpaper is garage from too much use
The little grit bumps wear away so when you feel it with your hand is starts to feel smooth. You will also notice as you are sanding, if less paint/stain is being worn away. Hope this helps!
Smile 24*7;)
Does anyone know where part 2 is? I’m trying to find out how to match the stain. A friend wants me to fix the top of her dresser.
Hello, here is a link to part two however it does not talk about matching old stain. ruclips.net/video/p1TCMXyurRo/видео.html
@@DIYDEANNA thank u ❤️
I also thing those tiny doggys need to help her out. Hee hee
I wish part 2 was linked in description

Do you prefer this method over the shellac?
Shellac is a good option for stain blocking, wood tannins bleed through. Sometimes you need both sanding and shellac. It depends on the wood, what’s currently on the surface and what your plans are for paint or stain.
@@DIYDEANNAthank you.
OMG what the hell man!! Well you made that look quite simple!! I'm struggling with a little project right now. My brother's wife has old toy box that was done with wood stain just like this(they did a very sloppy job whoever did it lol) but for whatever reason this thing is being a nightmare to sand!! This stain is just really holding on and doesn't wanna come off easily, not to mention they did the stain over a white paint too lol. But yeah it's being a bitch....was browsing YT looking for some sanding tips. I enjoyed watching your video but this was useless for me honestly haha you made that look so simple(as it should be) but my stain is on steroids or some shit. Wish me luck...I'm about to get started on it again.
Sorry to hear about your stubborn stain! Another option is using a paint/stain stripper or starting with a paint scraper then try sanding again. Good luck!
What kind of sander do you use?
I am trying to buy one that is affordable and can be used to re do furniture
How long did this take? 😃
I didn’t time it 😖 sorry!
Where are the rest of the videos in this series??
Here’s the playlist! ruclips.net/p/PLl1zRXnhL5t-m3kzAyHmWyHb2zARa-ZzK
I’m sanding and the stain is refusing to come off. My arms are exhausted 😭
It is hard work! What grit sandpaper are you using?
Surprised you didn't use an orbital sander
Hi
Hi!! So part 2?? 😁
Sorry for the delay! Editing in progress!
@@DIYDEANNA cant wait 👏
I posted it last week, part 3 in progress now.
@@DIYDEANNA can't wait 👏👏
So can you technically just sand the whole dresser by hand with sandpaper without any tools?
Yes. It would be a lot of work but it’s possible.
yup, chemical stripper it is. thanks!
Don't skip 3 grits.
DON’T EVER SAND WITHOUT A MASK AND GOGGLES!
Thanks for the information. Clearly your directions were not motivated to invest in tool.

Pozdrawiam 👍
My husband pulled a very expensive, hand carved bathroom vanity out of a multimillion dollar home he was working on. We stripped it down and set it aside for our next home to buy because the current home we were in, it was too extravagant.
However, when we moved... Although it would look beautiful, it wouldn't fit because it was too large.
I set it roadside for anyone to pick it up. But it was garbage day, so I put my garbage on the other side of the driveway.
Guess what happened.
Yep. I came running out too late and the garbage guys were complaining how heavy it was!!!! I stood there, looking at all the hard work in pieces because they immediately crush pressed it in.
I was devastated.
Oh no, so sorry this happened to you! That is devastating!
I would rather sand then strip cause I do my flipping in my home and it’s better for the environment vs those harsh chemicals
This lady is hot.
🥰
Doing this now on.a coffee table ,you can get that flexi sand paper that bends round the legs and the groves .
