The claims are outrageous. The Engine can't handle all those genres. Not one developer I know of has mastered every single game genre because they all specialize in different game genre. Now they say their game is the only game that we ever will want to play. I take a couple of seconds look at their video footage at what they done in the engine to Dreamworld and saw all the unreal store assets all just dumped in and lost interest. This peer to peer, no central server thing, they claim could host millions of players is nonsense. The speed of light is really fast, and the Earth isn't all too big from a lightbeam's perspective, but when a system has to zip this lightbeam back and forth literally several million times within fractions of a second to update everyone in the game world, then this can't be real-time. There will a phenomenon kick in known as "light lag". To update a million people at the same time without a central node but via p2p on a planet with a circumference of over 40.000 km and a diameter of over 12.000 km? Yeah, that would require an alcubierre style of faster than light spacial warpfield to make that happen (and for all we know, the alcubierre warpfield metric is in violation of the known laws of physics). We're talking about decaseconds of lag time - not milliseconds. So, this p2p hosting of millions of people sequentially will never be possible in real time on Earth; not even in a hundred years, when technology might be supercheap to host millions of people in one gameworld. It's quite literally physically impossible to make a realtime MMORPG this way. You need a central server for that, and even then: A million players on one server would be a technological nightmare to manage.
As a solo ue4 dev, i see only bunch of assets from marketplace, and some of them from "free for the month", combining them together is harder that may you thinking, this isn't just a skyrim mod that you just install and it's works, this look like scam for sure.
I'm not familiar with the asset stores so I didn't recognize that these were all available in the store. Right now 7 people have pledged $2,000 and 17 people have pledged $300. Those 24 people represent ~30% of the total raised. When I first saw the campaign I was interested, but by the time I read through the whole campaign it seemed unreasonable and doomed to fail. I watched an interview, and their technical approach to scaling seems flawed. Their approach of trying to be everything to everybody is also terribly flawed and if they somehow got over the technical hurdles and got something working then I think they would alienate a substantial portion of the players such that they could never have a self-sustaining population to pay the IT costs. Maybe they imagine that they can do everything peer-to-peer so that they don't have to pay for a server or maybe they don't really have a plan. I don't think the guy that worked at Apple and Google ever said what he did at those companies, but I think he implied it was in some sort of IT position.
