Every year saint Thayagaraja Aradhane is conducted during January February in the states of Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Renowned classical musicians come together to celebrate the great Sait by singing his Kritis.
This song is on of the pancharatna Kritis that is one of the Kriti considered among the five gems
We have heard this Kriti live by Yesudas in the Mysore dasara festivities program.👍

Endaro Mahanubhavulu was composed by Tyagaraja after an encounter with 'Shatkala Govinda Marar', a highly skilled musician from Travancore, Kerala. 'Shatkala' being a title given to him since he could effortlessly sing in six (Shat) kalas (Tempos).
There are two versions of the stories
One is that, upon hearing Shatkala Govinda Marar sing, Tyagaraja created "Endaro Mahanubhavulu" at that moment.
Another version is that it was a song that was already composed by him, but Tyagaraja sang that song at that moment.
This one of the Pancharatna Kritis ("Five Diamonds") of Tyagaraja.

This song is my all time favorite. There are many renditions (Devadoothan, Bala Murli Krishna’s and Mandolin Srinivas’s etc) but the full classical version always gives me goose bumps. Another nuance of this song that I enjoy is that, the slower it’s sung the more it envelops you

Flash news: Indian songs are not learnt by writing. They are memorised by reciting them over and over. So the style and the way a student sings depends on the style and lessons taught by the teacher. So if a teacher has learnt a variation from his / her guru, the same variation is carried along through their students for generations.

As a humble student of Karnatik music, I love the fact that you reacted to this great composition. I hear a ton of errors in their singing (pronunciation, tempo and pitch), but that's just my ear which cannot ignore errors. However, I truly loved Unni daughter's swarams for the stranza, "nee mEnu nAma" @10:57👌
    I love Unni's National-award winning ARR's song: "Ennavale".
The guy on left-hand side used a word "embellishment" (=alankAram or sangati in Karnatik music), not many know what it is. I'm impressed with him too for reacting so well and I can right away see that he has lot of knowledge on India. I'm bew to this channel.

This is not a devotional song, it the verbal representation of the humility of the singer/composer/writer Shri Thyagaraja, that there are many great people and he offers his salutations to them

The music is contemporized. You can find the actual music for the same song search for Endaro Mahanubhavulu by M Balamuralikrishna

It's beautiful how one sings the notes and the other follows with the lyrics. This is the beautiful structure of the kirtanam.

About the gesture of counting the beats by hand. Check out this video - Adi Tala and Speeds - Carnatic Music Lessons by Sunadam. That how classical music teachers teach to count the 8 beats or any beats pattern to start with. By using the fingers and front and back hand tapping the singers know exactly on which beat out of 8 beat cycle they are on.

Loved watching Korbin unconsciously following the Adi-Taalam, the 8 beat rhythm. Thanks for watching this, a gem of Carnatic Music, albeit a contemporary version. You guys should watch the classic movie, Sankarabharam. SPB Sir was brilliant in it...one would never guess that he had not been trained in Carnatic.

This is written and composed by Saint Tyagaraja. It’s his composition written way back... I’ve learnt classical too and we all learn almost the same way. As Unnikrishnan and his daughter did, they just improvised by adding small little notes here and there and made it sound amazing! You cannot change the saint’s composition too much. That’s talent. You should react to one of those Tyagaraja aaraadhana festivals to see everybody singing these songs exactly the same way.
