    I still don't understand why Germany was blamed for ww1.

    • @hannahmarie8690
      @hannahmarie8690 7 лет назад +43

      Reason why its Neutral is because during the early 19th Century, a Neutrality pack after the Napoleonic wars was in placed. Switzerland continues to this day in following the pack. There is no reason to invade it in ether world wars because the Civilians of Switzerland (Those who been in the army) Get to keep their guns. Also Countries have little to gain from invading Switzerland due to it being a country based on trade and it being a land locked country. With the Added Bonus that the Swiss Alps covers the Land scrap practically from all sides so Massive amounts of invading Troops practically could freeze to death or get lost on the mountain. Switzerland also Fortified some regions with Anti Aircraft Guns and Cannons so it would make it even more difficult to invade. In the end, Its not worth it because Diverting such resources to attack the small land locked nation could affectedly hurt the enemy's victory in the war.

      @Longknife 8 лет назад +94

      +Guerrero I'm no expert, but as I recall, the assassination forced Germany's hand. Due to their allegiances and the condition of their allegiances, they were forced to act and come to the aid of other countries they happened to be allied with, it's just Germany was the strongest of that alliance and therefore the front runner, so of course they were the most memorable force.
      It's also important to note the Treaty of Versailles was absolutely fucking bullshit, (if I recall correctly, it even sought to "cap" their economic growth so they can't become too powerful) so it's actually quite understandable why the Germans were so pissed off about it and how it helped set the stage for someone like Hitler to actually be heard. In that sense, while they were definitely the aggressors of WWII, the constraints of the Treaty of Versailles absolutely did not help in preventing further conflict.

    • @tabumain629
      @tabumain629 8 лет назад +28

      I'm just going to write the whole history down as I recall it.
      the Balkan areas already were at a high-risk state because of the Ottoman Empire, and every European State more-or-less despised the Empire. Especially the Slavic people wanted to detach form the Empire. Serbia wanted a big serbian Empire, but that also included the serbians which lived in Austria-Hungary. 1908 turkish Officers rebelled against the Sultan and Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina. Because of that Serbia saw Austria-Hungary as an Enemy and threated Austria-Hungary with war. Russia also felt attacked, because of their interests, but Germany warned Russia not to help Serbia. Now we come to the assassination. The aspiration of Serbia to have a big Empire always annoyed Austria-Hungary and with the assassination of the Prince they had a good reason to settle the score with Serbia. Germany didn't think that Russia would get involved in that matter and they gave Austria-Hungary full discretionary power. Austria-Hungary then sent Serbia an ultimatum: Among other things Austrian-Hungarian officials should get involved with the investigations of the assassination. Serbia didn't want that the officials of Austria-Hungary get involved and because of that Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia, against the speculations of Germany, helped Serbia. Germany then declared war on Russia and France, being the allies of Russia. At start of the war Germany immediately assaulted the neutral Belgium to defeat France from North. That assault on Belgium was the cause for Great Britain to join the war on the side of France and Russia. I think Germany is called key aggressor because of the immediate assault on Belgium

What united Germany was Prussia greatly expanding and taking the opportunity of a war against a foreign aggressor to bestow a sense of community among most German states.

    The reason why poles call Germany “Niemcy” is not because of the lots of smaller regions in Germany.
    Niemcy comes from word “Niemy” with means Muted/somebody who’s not talking. And the history of it is the fact than German language was really hard to understand and for us it Sounds like two muted people try to talk each other. Even word “Niemcy” you can understand like a group of muted people.

    It's a nice little vid about the history of Germany. You could obviously include much more than that, but you tried to cover 2000 years of history in a few minutes. But you made one minor mistake: When you showed the raise of nationalism in Germany after the Napoleon, the flags should be black red gold or gold red black. Just look up the pictures of the "Hambacher Fest" or the german revolution 1848.

    • @Suibhne

      Though...when i remember correctly it was Gold->Red-> Black back then and then they swaped and so on...in the end it was kind of an mess of flags since there were also flags wich rather look like these from sweden and norway.
      Im happy he took the Imperial one...it looks nice and its not even that wrong...
      It would be way worse if he took the imperial flag for nazi germany...wich do quite alot of people for some stupid reason

    • @juppjames9635
      @juppjames9635 8 лет назад +2

      It had to be a name The people didn't imagined a "Kaiserreich", when they dreamed of a unified Germany in that time, though. This is the reason why I think this part gives a wrong impression of the motives of the people. The Kaiserreich itself stand for colonialism as well, just to give one example. And the actual design of the flags were not that important, it was just the beginning of nationalism in Germany after all.

      Finland not really, they briefly worked together, against Stalin, but they had little to no sympathy for the axis and did not went further, after they reconquered the territories they had lost in the Winter War, plus unlike the totalitarian axis powers they were democraic. That's why when they drafted the new constitution after the war they made sure it was as close to foolproof as they could get, perhaps going a bit overboard in a way that disadvantaged small parties in order to keep out fringe groups and prevent a super fractured parliament.

    Very good video, but after the "treaty of versailles" the "Reichsmark" started to inflate, which was stopped in 1923 by the "Rentenmark" and in the "Weimarer Republic" (Germany) the golden twenties began. After that in 1923 because of the "Black Friday" a world economic crisis started. Then because of the money the US and other countries lend to germans they wanted it back as fast as possible. Thats why machines were sold and employees were fired. In connection with the savings policy by Brüning the people started to elect extremist parties like the NSDAP of Adolf Hitler because they were poor and mad. After the death of "von Hindenburg" (president) and Hitler as an chancellor he started the "Machtergreifung" and germany were made into a dictatorship.
    To sum up I just wanted to say the "treaty of versailles" wasn't the reason of the political change in 1933.

    Pointing out a mistake - The Romanian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia are indicated as part of Austria (Austro-Hungarian Empire) in the period around 1804-1866, and this is incorect - until 1877-1878, the suzeran empire of those states was the Otoman Empire (and, sometimes, the Rusian Empire apeared as "Protective Power"), and after that, they become independent (Romania) - only parts of the present day Romania (such as Transilvania, and part of Bucovina) had been controled at that time by the dual monarchy of Austria and Hungary

      That's a pretty narrow view on history heavily influenced by today's existence of national states. The HRE was never a state with a central government or such. Austria had a much closer history with its today's eastern neighbors starting in 1526. In that year the habsburgs became kings of Bohemia (present day Czech repbulic) and kings of Hungary (present day Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, parts of Romania, Serbia and Ukraine) also 1526's Archduchy of Austria included most parts of today's Slovenia and South Tyrol.This association lasted till 1918 and over the centuries became a centralized and bureaucratically ruled state with Vienna being its center. It's interesting but although the Habsburgs were also Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire from 1438 till its end 1806 they never had such a direct rule over the territories inside the HRE, because it was split into hundreds of smaller autonomous duchies and counties and its history is best described by constant opposition from north german protestant dukes against the Habsburg emperors. Today the culture and mentality of Austrians is much closer to their Eastern neighbors. This association of Austria with Germany that so prevails in many peoples' perception is more a result of 19th century German nationalism that rose in the territories of today's Germany (but not in Austria) that claimed all territories of the former HRE for themselves.

    • @Lioc
      @Lioc 8 лет назад

      so it would be pretty interesting if they made a video about the history of Austria without the usual national german sentiments

    • @Lioc
      @Lioc 8 лет назад

      +ᚲᛖᚲᛁᛚ ᚺᛟᛚᛇᛏᛖᛁᚾThe modern state came just into being in the end of the 18th century, it is very much connected with the emergence of enlightened absolutist rulers like in Austria Maria Theresia or Joseph II; everything before that can not be considered a state. The HRE was never united in any sense close to modern national states and also not "German" in a modern sense. It is by contrast in today's research often stylized as a transnational conglomeration of autonomous territories ruled by dukes or counts not because of their "nationality", culture or "ethnicity" but due to them being nobles.
      This idea of a "German Empire" in the past and "German people" consisting of a closed group due to their language or culture is an idea that was invented during the 19th century romantic period by poets due to the lack of an actual German state especially when compared to revolutionary France. The German identity was formed out of the opposition towards Napoleon, France and nobles from the territories of the former HRE who collaborated with Napoleon and thereby often changed their language of communication from German to French, but at the same time it also emerged out of admiration for the existence of a territorial France that seemed like an reflection of what these romantic intellectuals wished for Germany to be.
      In Austria this didn't happen in the beginning of the 19th century, because the german speakers had "their" Austrian Empire, which was of course not a national state but german speakers were privileged in it. For them the therm "German" meant something completely different, it was not an ethnically or culturally understood identity but rather, in the sense of pre-19th century times, German was the identification with a universal-imperial idea. The majority of people of the german speaking part of Austria only came in touch with a national understood german identity when in the first modern census in Austria-Hungary at the end of the 19th century people were asked to identify their nationality.
      The Austrian national identity was then born in the same fashion as the German one: with the loss of an empire that they felt more and more connected with (like Germans did at the end of the HRE) and "the flirt" and collaboration with a foreign power that seemed to reflect all the actual or alleged glory of the "Austrian's" former empire and at the same time the opposition towards the new rulers who felt more and more like intruders(like the Germans did with the French). It is of no surprise that the resistance movement towards the Nazi regime in Austria called itself O5 (=Ö=Österreich=Austria) and was a movement that included members of all political orientations united by the idea of an Austrian identity.
      What i want to say: it's true that the modern Austrian identity started coming into existence after World War I, like the German identity was born in the wake of the Napoleonic wars. It was then the 1871 founded German state that can be credited with spreading this identity to its inhabitants through its bureaucracy, its school system and its national mythology and techniques of state representation. In the same sense the Austria state has been doing it after 1945. The Austrians just entered the "national age" so late because of the existence of a state in which they were privileged till 1918: there was simply no need to before 1918. National movements always arise from political opposition towards the ruling environment.
      Also when it comes to culture, i dont know if you are Austrian or not, but if you are then i would suggest spending some time in the countries of former Habsburg territory. It so surprising how similar in mentality people from there are for example when it comes to work is; also their languages are often including austrian dialect words and their historical narrative often revolves around habsburgs: Cities like Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Zagreb and also Lviv have districts or as a whole make you feel like you are in vienna, from architecture to a viennese style coffee culture to monuments from Austrian times and a still high regard towards the Habsburg times among the people of those countries. Whereas in Berlin for example there is no connection like this between German and Austrian culture.

    • @Lioc
      @Lioc 8 лет назад

      you could also say the German identity seems older or "original" because its architects were romantic poets whose stories religiously exaggerated the meaning of Germany and heightened its existence as some kind of historic necessity that needs to be worshiped whereas the architects of the Austrian identity were politicians who rather had the political reality in mind but lacking the romantic mythology

Example: Bavarians were not a Germanic tribe known to the romans, there is a notion opf celtic tribes settling in the area of southern germany and austria known as the Boiern, first written acknowledgement as Bajowarjōz in the 6th century or so...those tribes were nothing like homogenous populations, but remnants of celtic tribes, roman population, eastern european and as most as northenrn african invasions

      Regnal names are generally given in the respective variants when referring them in a certain language. In German it's "Karl" while in English and French it's Charles, in Spanish Carlos, Italian Carlo etc.
      Even today this tradition continues. Queen Elizabeth II is in German "Elisabeth". Her son Prince Charles as king would be "Karl" as well in German unless he would take another name like his grandfather did.
