It is strange that you approached the airport from the north part of Sydney. One would expect that this flight enters Sydney from the south. Did you notice if in the last part of the flight, you flew over Papua or NorthEast Australia?
No, this flight came from the south. The runway use would be weather dependent I would assume but every time I have landed in Sydney it has been from the North.
This flight goes nowhere near NE Australia or New Guinea. It crosses the Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean and approaches entirely from the south sometimes over Tasmania. At certain times of the year Antarctica is even visible.
