I remember both of these gentlemen as a boy. I remember how polished and well spoken Floyd Patterson was on the Tonight Show and other public venues.

Before the 1st Johansson/Patterson bout, the American media gave full coverage to Ingemar, but Floyd got little. Only after their 3rd encounter did Patterson appear much on TV or in mainstream magazine articles, and only then did people here know how well spoken and genuinely nice he was.

@@ET-RAMBLINGS That’s interesting. Thanks for the historical update.

Another great story about an era I remember very well. Floyd carried a hatred for Ingemar in 1959 and in the early 60s but those feelings changed profoundly after their battles in the ring. They became close friends, like Joe Louis & Max Schmeling.
Interesting to see that Ingemar also became close friends with Sonny Liston.

In 1998 Floyd was still the chairman of NYC boxing commissioner. If Ingemar and his wife run into Floyd's wife Janet at Tyson Holyfield fight, Janet had to be with Floyd. They used to get together much often than that. The two run marathons together more than 3 times too. Hey, no one knows about this, but Janet's family and Ingemar's were related from the same old town/village. Floyd's mother in law's maiden name was Johansson too. Even they weren't aware of it until Janet and Ingemar's sister found it out that they were from the same town.

Patterson is the only fighter to defeat Ingemar Johansson. Ingo also became friends with Sonny Liston.

    Hi ET
Floyd was too courageous in the ring, took too many hard punches, more than he had needed. He was an attack boxer, while Ingo was a defensive counter puncher and didn't take half as much punches as Patterson did in the ring. However Ingo developed a kind of dangerous self defense style in sparring. He never knocked out his sparring partners, as Floyd often did, instead he trained on blocking punches, but that also meant that he sometimes had to block a load of punches against the head poorly protected by his gloves. This was done repeatedly year after year, in a very similar way as Ali used to do in training and that was detrimental to his brain.Just my personal view and observations.
Thanks for keeping these two great guys in memory.

That's true about Ingo's training, but I think Patterson's work in his last 2 bouts with Johannson did some damage, too.

@@ET-RAMBLINGS Yes ET, especially the devastating KO in the 5th round in their second fight when Ingo was hit by Patterson's left which could've killed him.

Books on Patterson and Tyson have some stories, and a few articles are online that mention D'Amato, but I'm not aware of anything that details his whole life.

My dad was a diehard Floyd Patterson fan. Having said that, the moment he realized that Muhammad Ali was destined for greatness was when he "outboxed the boxer", Floyd Patterson in 1965.

They shared happiness and respect, which transcended race barriers: very sad about their mental decline, BUT to be expected. Compare with professional football [soccer] players who played with the old leather balls-when the ball was damp & muddy, it must have been like being punched by Ingo as they headed it.
Anyhow, two really nice guts: a sad decline for each.
