I dont know how you kept your Sky Q boxes running through this as my main box plain refused to recognise the new router. Shame as I used this as a decent recommendation. Everything else was fine but honestly it's redundant if the Q system doesn't want to link 😞
You have to go into your Sky Q box settings to reset your Network Connection to find the new router. Got to Settings - Network Connection - Network Setup - Reset.....It take a little while to reset, just be patient. Then just search for your Wifi and connect.

hi i wanted to make sure, so one end of the internet cable (ADSL cable) goes in the new tp link router and the other end in the sky hub, is this right?
No... This replaces the Sky router entirely, the adsl is plugged into the tp-link and that's it. Although the setup is different for ADSL, I think there's a different username and password.

Hey there, thanks for this video.. The lack of features on the Sky Router has been bugging me for some time now not to mention the hardware inside is getting a bit old now (it was slowing down my CCTV feed so had to bypass straight to my Netgear switch) And, as you say it's annoying Sky haven't built in a modem only mode, but I expect this is because they don't want people swapping them out and using their own equipment. Your video has inspired me to finally make the decision and swap it out with the TP Link. In fact I've just placed the order! I've also gone for the AC1200 but I noticed yours was VR600 where as the one I've order is VR2100, hmm not really sure what the difference is though. Barely any differences really showed up when I tried to compare on the TP Link website. You probably already know this, but TP Link also do a really good App for either iOS or Andriod called "Tether" which is worth installing. I found it very interesting that the Modem has detected the line connection being much faster, and Sky is actually limiting it.. I'll probably find this is the same case with mine. Anyways .. thanks again for this video, it really helped me out especially the user name and password section (kind of important). Oh, and you now have a new subscriber. Cheers!! - Neil.
Hey there! Came across this video, saw your comment and had the same question about the VR2100 as opposed to the VR600, was wondering if I could ask a quick something: Did the VR2100 end up working well for you in the end? And at that with stable speeds/range? I just wanna make sure if I buy the VR2100 (since I'm guessing it's slightly more modern?), it wouldn't end up being the rubbish brother to the VR600 :D Hope to hear back from you about it, and I hope it's good news, - Sciatic :)
@@SciaticCoast89 Hey there Sciatic, good to hear from you. It was a little while ago now, and yes I did in fact purchase the VR2100 from Amazon back in May 2021 (just checked my Amazon order history), but unfortunately I had to send it back. It did work well, although it was a while ago now I seem to recall it was very easy to set up with Sky (who's connection credentials are a pain), the TP Link software if very good on the Router. However, the Router I had seemed to develop a fault whereby (I think) the WiFi just kept going down, and I couldn't figure out why (I'm also a bit of techy). So in the end I ended up returning it for a refund. This doesn't mean to say you would have the same problem though. Personally I do recommend purchasing goods through Amazon because if you do have a problem or for some reason it doesn't work out, their returns policy is second to none. I've actually got Sky's Fibre to the Property (FTTP) and I'm running the Asus RT-AX56U which is a nice little Router, But because I've got FTTP I don't need the actually modem side of things with the router. I hope all that helps, and I wish you look in your decision. All the best - Neil.
@@NeilBradleyMS Hey again Neil, much appriciate the response! :) I think in that case it might be worth pursuing one of these for cheap, the main reason I'm after one to begin with is generally the ASDL/VDSL Sky Routers we've had always seem to conk out after around 6 months, we've been maintaining our current one by flipping it upside down to vent any heat out, and it still goes out almost daily! 😂 Besides that, I have a theory as to why the TP Link router may have been timing out, but of course even if I'm completely wrong I'd be happy to have an average-and-stable speed, as opposed to the poor range, constantly cutting connection we have now :) That brings me to another point, and I hope you're okay with me going for one or two or questions 😅: How would you say the range on the VR2100 was for you? I live in a single floor flat, so while it's not essential, for such a small space I'd rather not continue having my brother's Wi-Fi depend on an old Extender in his room, so if it's any better on range than a Sky Router, all the better! 😊 Thanks again for the initial feedback, you've already been more helpful than most forums I've looked up, and even if I don't hear back from you again I hope you're doing well 😊 - Sciatic :)
@@SciaticCoast89 Hi there Sciatic, yes indeed good to talk to you once again. My apologies for not getting back to you yesterday, I had one of 'those' days if you know what I mean.. a bit hectic with the lead up to Christmas. I totally understand about your Sky Router conking out, for me my Sky router worked ok but I just didn't like how Sky locked everything down in their software. I like the versatility of a router of my own choice as I feel you have so much more control. Before I'd got FTTP (Fibre to the Property) I was also on FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet - those little green boxes you see dotted around the streets). I just wanted to point out to you the main issue I was having when trying to find a 3rd party modem such as the VR2100. Sky have this really weird way their systems connect the Internet to their customers via their modem/router, it's a protocol call “MER” or DHCP Option 61, something like that if memory serves. Anyway, when I was looking for a 3rd party router I had to make sure it was compatible with this protocol otherwise it won't work. The VR2100 is one of the very few that is compatible and I believe it's as simple as just choosing the “MER” option within the Admin settings page. In addition to this you may be required to input login details, so the VR2100 can also connect to Sky systems (all part of the MER protocol), I'm fairly sure the user name and password you can use is: User: abcdefgh@skydsl Password: 1234567890abcdef (The above may not be necessary, I can't quite remember) In answer to your question, in all honesty the range of the VR2100 was good.. it definitely seemed as good as the Sky router, perhaps a little better but hard to tell. Certainly no worse that is for sure. Just a note on the Extenders you mentioned, it's actually better to try and plug an extender about half way between the source (the router) and it's destination (your brothers room). By doing this, it is able to grab the Wifi signal fairly well as it's not too far away from the Router, BOOST it, then deliver it to your Brothers room. If the extender is too far away from the Router itself, the signal is too weak for it to pick up and boost if you see what I mean. I've really enjoyed chatting with you and it's a pleasure trying to help you and if I can offer you some advice based on my own experience. So good luck, I would be interested to hear back with what you decide to do and (hopefully) if it works ok. (Sorry about the long message) Cheers - Neil.
Hi, are you getting any random drop outs on the vdsl connection with this modem? Any chance you could please check the connection time on the modem? How long has it been connected for?
Thanks for this looks ideal. From testing what's the range seem like ? Also do you have Sky Q mini boxes ? As I've read they can be fiddly adding to a new router as they don't work well on 5mhz apparently. I need to Google this router as I want one where I can create VLAN's for my smart home devices.
Hi Kip...I've had a search through the comments, but can't find any one with a BT Hub. At present I have an older Home Hub 4 ADSL, but will soon be getting a BT Smart Hub 2, (VDSL) as I'm moving home. Will the TP-Link AC2100 work with a BT Hub? During your video, in setup, I think I saw BT VDSL listed? Thanks
Well it should work INSTEAD of it - this replaces the ISP supplied router - so it's a Modem Router instead of just a Router. I can't see why it wouldn't work, but you'd need the username and password to connect to the BT VDSL network. (It's probably easy to find via Google)

Yeah - the Virgin Hub is specifically for Virgin connections - you'd probably get one of the newer Sky Q Routers which is the SR203 (I think) it's actually not bad - I'm using it since I made this video.
Hey! Probably a stupid question: when you first setup this router, is it required to access it through an ethernet cable or can it be done with WiFi only? Unfortunately I do not own any laptop with ethernet ports
This is absolutely brilliant. As I wanted to set my own DNS/VPN/DNS IP advert filtering via a raspberry pi but under normal Sky router you have to set each device to change the DNS. This will allow me to point to my Pi DNS at router level and cut out adverts on everything, well maybe not the TV but all IP based devices. Thanks
@@kiphakes based on the info you shared and the first video I watched of yours. Yes I've liked, subb'd and full notified. Looking forward to new videos from you.
If you are using a pihole you don’t need to do that, you need to turn dchp on your sky q hub off, assign your raspberry pi an ip address in the higher range and then set your sky router ip range below the number you’ve set so it won’t mess the network up. Sounds like an old router! I’d recommend this method!

Cheers!! - Neil.
Thanks so much for the comment!
Hey there! Came across this video, saw your comment and had the same question about the VR2100 as opposed to the VR600, was wondering if I could ask a quick something:
Did the VR2100 end up working well for you in the end? And at that with stable speeds/range? I just wanna make sure if I buy the VR2100 (since I'm guessing it's slightly more modern?), it wouldn't end up being the rubbish brother to the VR600 :D
Hope to hear back from you about it, and I hope it's good news,
- Sciatic :)
I think in that case it might be worth pursuing one of these for cheap, the main reason I'm after one to begin with is generally the ASDL/VDSL Sky Routers we've had always seem to conk out after around 6 months, we've been maintaining our current one by flipping it upside down to vent any heat out, and it still goes out almost daily! 😂
Besides that, I have a theory as to why the TP Link router may have been timing out, but of course even if I'm completely wrong I'd be happy to have an average-and-stable speed, as opposed to the poor range, constantly cutting connection we have now :)
That brings me to another point, and I hope you're okay with me going for one or two or questions 😅:
How would you say the range on the VR2100 was for you? I live in a single floor flat, so while it's not essential, for such a small space I'd rather not continue having my brother's Wi-Fi depend on an old Extender in his room, so if it's any better on range than a Sky Router, all the better! 😊
Thanks again for the initial feedback, you've already been more helpful than most forums I've looked up, and even if I don't hear back from you again I hope you're doing well 😊
- Sciatic :)
In addition to this you may be required to input login details, so the VR2100 can also connect to Sky systems (all part of the MER protocol), I'm fairly sure the user name and password you can use is:
User: abcdefgh@skydsl
Password: 1234567890abcdef
(The above may not be necessary, I can't quite remember)
In answer to your question, in all honesty the range of the VR2100 was good.. it definitely seemed as good as the Sky router, perhaps a little better but hard to tell.
(Sorry about the long message)
Cheers - Neil.
