@Simmlex (PART 1) The most accepted theory was that Nobunaga committed suicide while he was being assassinated. He was returning home from a successful battle and sent Akechi Mitsuhide to support Toyotomi Hideyoshi in their campaign against the Mouri. However, Mitsuhide directed his troops towards Honnoji, where Nobunaga was staying for the night. Mitsuhide betrayed Nobunaga and lit Honnoji on fire to prevent Nobunaga's escape. (To be continued in PART 2)
As for Mitsuhide, some say Hideyoshi killed him, some say a bandit lord stabbed him with a spear while he was getting away from Hideyoshi's army through a minor city full of bandits.
This is actually rather fitting for not just this guy but the REAL Oda Nobunaga. That dude was a vicious bastard who struck absolute fear into all of Japan and killed god knows how many, both warrior and innocent...
And so were all the others. He was quite advanced on human rights for his time actually. I mean Hideyoshi was a peasant. How many others would give him a chance? Also he made a black man a samurai.
From what I heard he was killed by Akechi Mitsuhide, who got mad due to his service in Nobunagas force, while Nobunaga was praying at Honnouji. But since neither his body nor a grave for him was discovered until today, some people believe he simply returned to hell though.
... This song made my spine shiver as hard as only a handful of songs before can. This song is only a few paces apart from topping The Road of Lords in my charts... though it might be unfair to compare two separate path of badassery.
What is most believed is that Mitsuhide rebelled against Nobunaga at honnoji while his forces were busy in the west, mainly because of his cruelty, and jealousy over Ranmaru. (oda and ranmaru had a love thing going on believe it or not) oda committed harakiri so that he could die without mitsuhide taking the mantle. later on, mitsuhide escaped hideyoshi and began a new persona called Tenkai. some say Oichi survived Honnoji and hunted him down, others say he died by being recognized.
@Simmlex (PART 2) Defeated but not wanting Mitsuhide to rule, Nobunaga killed himself and his corpse disappeared in the burning remains of Honnoji. Because Mitsuhide was unable to claim Nobunaga's head and prove his worth, nobody allied with him. Soon, Toyotomi Hideyoshi returned from his battle (truce) with Mouri and killed Mitsuhide at Yamazaki. This was the end of Mitsuhide's 3-day Shogunate and the start of Toyotomi's reign.
This music is incredible...And I love how the color of sorrow is white in the Orient instead of black...Gives Nobunaga a misleading air to those not familiar with the culture (well, if it weren't for the Latin choir boys, ominous atmosphere, and the fact that he uses his fallen enemies' skulls as sake cups...)
