  • Earlier this year I bought the 15-inch M3 MacBook Air and fell in love with it when I started to use it. In fact, other than when I was editing videos that has been my go-to MacBook - until a fortnight ago.
Then I started to use the 13-inch M4 iPad Pro and I’ve barely been able to leave it alone - it’s THAT good. That’s what got me thinking though - there is a cross-over of these two Apple devices and I thought it might make for an interesting video if we compared them spec for spec to find out the strengths and weaknesses of both.
We’ll check productivity, apps, cameras, batteries and even speakers.
Let’s compare the M4 iPad Pro and M3 MacBook Air…

Another good video, thanks. Am looking forward to your wwdc coverage. I use my MacBook Air m2 at work for my office side of work (I’m an English teacher at a Japanese school) and I grab my iPad Air m1 when I go to the classroom to access pdf files and videos for the classroom. It’s a nice combo that works well.

I have both my MacBook Air M1 and iPad Air M1. They both serve different purposes. I’ve come to realize that the iPad struggles with certain websites, that alone made me want to buy a MacBook, I could have gotten a cheap pc laptop but I prefer the ecosystem. Since I started using both for the right necessities, I’ve had no regrets. I had the Magic Keyboard with my iPad a while back and it worked well for 80% of the time but again certain sites failed to function properly.

Hi Gifford - yeah, I totally agree some apps and websites don't function as well on the iPad. The list seems to be getting shorter though and the improvements not only to the iPad itself but also to the OS are great.

Brilliant summary, David. I picked up a 13 inch iPad Pro after trying out several non-pro models over the past decade. This is the first time I've seen this device as a hybrid work-play tool that I'd be happy to carry around everywhere and comfortably do 95% of my daily workflows. The overall experience makes me want to choose it first over my M1 Max Macbook pro. Seeing it as the future and adapting to what it offers is the way to go. iPad OS won't be the lesser OS for much longer.

The reason why the export times were almost identical is because the media engines in the M3 and M4 are the same. Exporting videos are all done on the media engine and the improved GPU in the M4 makes no difference. I'm really enjoying the editing style you've adopted as of late. Your videos are much more captivating now than ever before.

Great video. Interesting how your own workflow influences your choice. For me, an office worker and IT guy, I would always take the Mac over the iPad. MacOS has more professional software available, more hardware support for peripherals, and a proper mutitasking OS. iPadOS tends not to do anything in the background, so if you're copying a big file or exporting something, you kinda have to just watch it do its thing. The mics are much better on the macbook for online meetings. You can have multiple audio streams, so you can play music in the background while in a Zoom meeting or watching a tutorial. I can plug a macbook into a TV and it generally looks great, with the iPad that's not always the case. I wish Apple would fix iPadOS, because these issues are generally nothing to do with the hardware. Oh, and I need a terminal and text editor, that's kinda my job 🙂. Also, the macbook air is going to cost you less money and feels just a bit more solid.

hi ya Paul - yeah, you are right, what our workflow happens to be very much influences our choice of device. I will be interested to hear what they come up with later today at WWDC too 👍🏻

I gave up on the idea on using the iPad Pro as a MacBook replacement several years ago. The iPP is a tablet and I am using it as such! I don't need or use this "Magic Keyboard" or an external display with the iPP. if I need this I am using my great 15" MacBook Air or my iMac. Why should I use a first class tablet as a second class laptop? So you can't really compare these devices.
For business and serous work I am always using my MacOS devices. The 15" display is much better for SDR content because it has 15"! Besides that the sound quality is much better and the battery life too. Working with a laptop on the lap is also better because it is not top heavy. Finally only MacOS is usable for "serious" computing...
The iPP is unbeatable for working in bed or on a sofa....

The Macbook Air doesn't sketch like iPad Pro. The iPad Pro doesn't have the efficient productivity overall like Macbook Air (or Surface Pro for that matter). Once the iPad Pro does get what Surface Pro and Macbook Air can do efficiently then that is the future. The future is entirely Apple's decision. So far they have been braking on it for financial reasons since it would very much cut into Macbook sales.

Answering your question directly, I have been surprised how quickly I've gotten used to the Files app and working in iPadOS too. The more I use it, the more I see it as the future. And, yes, I spend my mornings working in web apps on the iPad - YT Studio, Xero, and some CRM tools and Lightroom too.

For the hundreds of ipad vs laptop videos, the conclusion ALWAYS boil down to whether someone needing to use full cpu programs (full MS office apps, professional coding apps, professional video and audio software, professional math software, etc).
If they do then getting an iPad instead of a laptop is asinine.
But if someone doesn't need to use full desktop software and only needs basic software where the iPad can run then clearly the iPad is better.
But here's the kicker: over 99% of iPad buyers already own a laptop/desktop for doing serious work if need be.
    So what's the purpose?
Why do we sit here and watch all these videos when that is a common sense conclusion?

because this iPad costs more than a laptop and looks like it can do what a laptop does. And given the specs, you'd expect it to be able to do everything. Most people dropping 2K on a tricked out iPad Pro are not expecting it to be only useful for watching youtube and doing the odd email.

You can get wrist rests David.
Future proofing has not been a priority for me. For example in all my purchases from Apple in the past I have always stepped back a generation (e.g. when the iPhone 7 was released I bought an iPhon66; iPhone 13 was released I bought an iPhone12; the difference in cost between the generations was huge.) I did the same thing with my laptop and iPad purchases.
The double layer in the display may be beautiful but not a buying point for me.
Sooooo based on what I use my devices for (not business; not work; I am retired and a hobbyist) and your video (all of which I enjoy immensely) sold me on the M3 MacBook Air.
The iPad Pro I use is 5 years young and does all I need of it.
My MacBook Pro is 9 years old and has been used by my adult son on a daily basis for the last three years. It's got this funky warp effect happening on the case (overheat maybe) so it is time for replacement (one for him and one for me perhaps).

hi ya great to hear from you again - I hope you are keeping well.
The M3 MacBook Air is a fantastic laptop - and I oddly prefer using it to my MBP! And you are quite right to keep a hold of your kit. Until recently I was using a 2015 Intel 27-inch iMac! Obviously, for what I do here on the channel it means I should be reporting on the latest devices to help people others with their purchasing decisions.
As to my reference of future-proofing - if you are buying new today think about the future. But in your case, you still have some great kit around you, so why change?
Keep well and thanks as ever for watching and getting involved too 👊🏻

Hi! Based on my personal experience as a professional, the iPad Pro is really only useful to a very, very small niche of users and is capable of satisfying very specific and niche workflows. Digital drawing and 2D illustrations, some kind of 3D modelling and sculpting using apps like NomadSculpt and a few others, very basic music production, very, very basic video editing, very basic web browsing. In general, apart from a few exceptions like the Affinity suite, the iPad Pro in a professional’s hands can really only be used for workflows that start and finish on the iPad Pro, without running true desktop-class apps that are compatible with their Mac counterparts.
iPadOS is really a toy operating system and is quite ridiculous. It’s incapable of supporting almost any kind of professional work. Currently, the Mac/MacOS combo outclasses the iPad Pro in almost every aspect. If it weren’t for the Apple Pencil, the iPad Pro would have no reason to exist. But even so, it remains a beautiful tool, but only as a very marginal support for a true professional’s work (excluding digital artists for whom it can truly replace a Wacom).

hi - you make some really great points, thank you.
Yeah, I can't ever see myself solely working on the iPad, but I can see myself using it as my go-to device when not editing etc...

hey man, im going into college this fall is it ideal to get the ipad pro or the macbook air as my device throhgout college? I'm mostly gonna use it for note taking, web searching, youtube, but the colleges uses alot of excel and pwoerpoint can the ipad pro use those apps and does it work good?

from a note-taking point of view, the iPad would be a beast with the Pencil Pro, but from what I hear Powerpoint isn't great on the iPad. At today's event, I believe they will announce that you can record VMs directly into Notes - so that may help you. I'd say watch WWDC today - but overall I reckon the MBA might suit you better

The iPhone wins with its camera, but the MacBook wins the audio. The iPad is terrible on both, unfortunately. Is it possible to use Continuity Camera to use the iPhone camera on the iPad Pro?

The “Face & Front camera on my iPad Pro M4 13” is a big pile of shit as bad as shit it self can stink. Where My Sister’s new MBA-M3 15” hands down was a lot better in comparison.
Did like you, I tested my 13Pro Max 6.7” iPhones and it was a little better.
HOWEVER, used the Samsung S23 and it was like a freakin 4k TV it was way above all of my Apple vinegar photo testing, not to mention audio was way, way clearly better on my M1 iPad Pro . 😢 I feel I made a expensive hype apple purchase mistake 😭

yeah, I was pretty disappointed by the camera results tbh. I'm just about to record a podcast with a Samsung user so I've seen the quality of those

Misguiding review. What work including video editing & music compositions & multi tasking you can achieve from MacBook Air cannot be done on iPad

    • @DavidLewisTech
      @DavidLewisTech  11 дней назад

Misguiding? Really? I merely pointed out that I choose to edit audio (in Audition which is unavailable on the iPad) on a Mac. I've become a huge fan of the iPad over the past few weeks, but there will always be a place in my workflow for the Mac alongside the iPad.
