  • Oaxaca is extraordinary! We're going behind the scenes to learn about alebrijes, black pottery, & more!

This video is Part 2 of our Oaxaca, Mexico video series. In this travel vlog, we visit three special towns just outside of Oaxaca City:
    1. San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca
    2. San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca
    3. Santo Tomás Jalieza, Oaxaca
First, we went to San Bartolo Coyotepec to see a live demonstration of traditional Oaxacan pottery making. We learn how the clay is harvested, molded, refined, carved, and cooked in underground ovens to create either black or brown pottery. The work that goes into each piece is astonishing!
Next, we drove to San Martin Tilcajete where we visited the famous alebrijes workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles. Disney Pixar actually came to this exact location while doing research for the movie Coco. It blew our minds to learn how laborious the process of making alebrijes is. People come to this workshop from all over the world to learn how to be a master at carving and painting Oaxaca alebrijes.
Before heading to our last stop, we enjoyed our tour guide’s “car bar” where we sampled some of their very own mezcal. Spoiler alert: Oaxacan Mezcal is SO GOOD!
Finally, we drove down the road to Santo Tomas Jalieza to learn how intricate, hand-woven textiles are made. We learned that it’s common for one piece to take 3, 7-hour days (21 hours total) to create just one!
It’s hard not to LOVE Oaxaca, Mexico after learning more about its culture. The patience, dedication, and love that all of these artisans have for their craft is inspiring. After spending one week in Oaxaca, we can safely say that it’s become one of our all-time favorite places in Mexico. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel to see our next Oaxaca video! You guys should visit Monte Alban it's not far from Oaxaca City maybe 20-30 minutes from Oaxaca city and Hierve el Agua which is like an hour and a half from the city. Also Oaxaca has beautiful beaches like Huatulco and Puerto Escondido. Its an all around wonderful state.

Please don’t. Because if you retire there it has a negative effect on the property values and artisans and the locals are unable to afford to live there now. Just like what happened in San Miguel de Allende. And the world looses a bit of its rich culture and history. Try Cuernavaca Morelos, it’s California weather yearly a d you wouldn’t be negatively impacting a Region.

We stayed for two weeks and traveled from Laredo, Texas through Monterrey and Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta. We didn't care very much for Puerto Vallarta due to the higher prices and getting hassled by vendors. But we went back to Guadalajara and stayed there for a few days making trips to smaller towns nearby. Every place we visited was our new favorite. We came back to the United States with some great memories and a lot of new favorite places.

Each one wearing their beautiful indigenous clothing. Many if, not all, of these "costumes" have been seen on Frieda. Jan 1st is off the hook. At midnight in the city center(zocolo) they do a count down...then BAM!!!! colored eggs filled with confetti or flour go flying everywhere..and the live MUSIC on every corner of the central square..sheer heaven!!! Ok, you two. Now I've just got to get on a plane and go to Oaxaca again. This was just great! That's exactly the right way to see this amazing jewel of a city and region. I was first there in 1974 and feel in love with it. But was last there a long 14 years ago. I worried if it's the same, but now I see the magic continues and you found it in so many ways and new to me too. This and the first video were excellent!

We'll have to take another trip to see some of Oaxaca's beaches. Puerto Escondido was at the top of our places to visit when we came to Mexico but we never made it there.
