    i got this filter for my turtle's 55 gallon tank. made a big difference in water quality. always keep it on full flow. I put a layer of polyfill on top of the sponge and below the charcoal filter and ceramic filter. best NOT to rinse the filter in the sink. it needs the bacteria to eat the bad stuff in the water, so just rinse the filter components in a bucket of the water you siphon off when cleaning the tank as well as you can. When I was having trouble with mine, I wanted to call for tech support, but the phone number was only good in Canada and UK and their website advertised in the directions was not even working. Figured out my problem was just that the impeller wasn't seated. The impeller is not like cheaper filters that are just turned by a motor. The impeller actually has a magnet in it that turns when the filter is turned on. So basically the motor will not even run without the impeller in it. Still working fine after 3 months. Good filter especially for dirty turtles!

    some filters have the floss sock with a plastic frame inside. with the aquaclear it is just the foam block. so when I bought a replacement foam, I didn't need all the plastic... less plastic is good, also the foam filter lasts years longer than the floss sock kind...
    with aquaclear, I would suggest people think twice about getting a much larger filter. like you mention the 50 gallon, is for 20-50 gallon. but when I used a larger filter for the tank, I had to turn the flow way down. it can make the filter a bit louder, sometimes if makes the lid start to vibrate... also when the flow is turned down, it could make the motor and impeller work harder and wear out sooner? seems always better to match to the proper sizes

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  5 лет назад

      Depends on the stocking. Some fish like more flow. I don’t think it will wear out sooner if you keep low.

    Hey Michael! Random question, hopefully you can help!
    When online-ordered fish are received by the buyer - what is the proper method of prepping and transferring the fish to a new home environment? Does one rest the bag and allow it to temperature-match, or maybe drip acclimate? Or is it the old-school dump the bag into a net over a bucket and transfer directly to a tank sort of deal?

    Throughout my entire life (which is not that short anymore : ( ) I must have had a dozen Aqua Clears on my multiple tanks. It's always been my favorite but I do have to admit that living in South Florida between the hurricanes and thunderstorms, the power outages are frequent and when you get home and find dry media especially bio media and a dry whirling impeller it's been tempting lately to buy a submerged impeller like the SeaChem Tidal since it will prime itself once the power is back on. You can also place your own media like the AquaClear and on top of that you can take an interior basket out of the filter that has sides and the reversible top of the filter doubles as a bottom for when you remove the basket you won't have water all over the place. I just bought one and hope it will be as great as reviews say it is.

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  3 года назад +1

      I find if you keep the impeller clean and maybe lube it, it should start after a power outage. Another trick, is add a sponge filter for a place for extra BB to live so if the AC does not start and the media gets dry, there is still BB in the tank.

    Granted, the priming issue does exist, but still prefer them. My AC 30 run dry for around 22 hours. When I discovered it, the motor was HOT!!! No surprise! But, I let cool, rinsed the media in dechlorinated water and the monitored the water parameters and all was fine. BUT, these were healthy fish, in an established tank. This is part of the reason why I choose to run unsightly sponge filters in all my tanks, scaped or otherwise. Well placed hardscape or plants can hide them reasonably well.

    Sorry this is so funny. Had the same filter years ago. Hang on the backs are okay, but don't at all beat sumps or canisters even. I feel in my opinion sponge filters are better than hang on the backs. HOB's never cut it for me and always had to use them in conjunction with sponge or forgot them altogether and just used sponge. But for planted tanks with substrate, canisters with a sponge prefilter or how I created my sump set ups, with overflows with stainless steel mesh which is baby shrimp and fry proof is the best. One six foot sump with two 40cm square refugium tanks and 4 bigger tanks above is the best I have ever had and made it all myself. Rack, tanks and sump all made by me from scratch.

  • @lastditch727
    @lastditch727 2 месяца назад

    I have and like all the small ones, but the 110s aren't as sturdy. You literally use the lid to keep the box from bowing out in the back. Its so heavy when filled with water that it gets sketchy when removing to periodically clean the motor. The plastic needs to be different. I also feel like the sponge is too thick. I cut mine down about 3/4 of and inch and use more bio media and floss. Now they have the "new" ones that dont really show much improvement.

    I see a complaint that the Aquaclear doesn't restart after a power outage. The problem is that detritus (aka crud 'n muck) gets down in the impeller/magnet chamber.
    All you need to do is pull the motor/impeller and clean it like once a month and the filter will restart every time!

    I know they have 30, 50, 70, and 110 and pretty sure there is also a 20 model.
    Do you remember when the model number was the gallons per hour? I think that changed when Fluval bought them out. I know what are 110s now used to be called 500s, the 110s dont move 500gph now, think they claim 430 or something. Like many things they used to be better back then but they found ways to save some pennies here and there are crappier plastic and weaker pumps. But still the best HOB.

    I have 3 of these filters. 2 75-110's on my 75 and a 40-70 on my 55. I love these filters except for 1 thing, the cheap thin plastic they r made out of. Be very careful when handling these filter while cleaning. The smaller one I had the opening for the motor snap when I went to twist the motor off to clean the impeller. Also broke one of the larger ones just by carrying it with one hand after cleaning it the side I was carrying it just snapped right off and fell on ground and broke more.

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  4 года назад

    Aquaclears are excellent filters, however, and after being in this hobby for around 20 years, I must say that I would put penguin 350 over aquaclear 70. Now, if you talk about aquaclear 110, that would be a different ball game. However, in the range of 70 to 75 gallons I would say penguin 350 is overall a better filter than aquaclear 70, not by far tho.
