You can get circular polarizers that fit into a NiSi or other maker's square holder. But, they both huge and hideously expensive. NiSi's polarizer/adapter integration is the main reason I bought the holder system last year. I bought Lee ND filters for it, based on user reviews. I rarely shoot directly into the sun and when I do, I exposure stack if necessary with the sun blocked for one exposure. So, flare isn't a big deal for me. I bought this system after trying screw-in filters and getting unacceptable vignetting. I wound up getting an extra adapter and adapter caps, and I keep the adapters on my two most-used landscape lenses. Overall, I'm very happy with the NiSi V5 Pro system. I do occasionally struggle to remove the polarizer, but that's why I work out. 😉
I did quite a bit of research before getting a filter system, and my conclusion was that Nisi was best performance vs price. I got the same kit and are very happy with it.
I was told as you started that you could use another manufacturers 100mm ND filter. I came across a Lee 6 stop and tried it only to see that it doesn't seal 100 per around!! Contacted Nisi they never heard of this and suggested installation of there foam replacement which looks different than Lee. Replaced the foam gasket and guess what - still light leaking from top and bottom.
I went with this system over the Lee filter system which I thought was too cumbersome, it's also much better than Formatt Hi Tech's Firecrest alternative.
92mm, oh a bummer, the mighty Sony FE PZ28135f4 as well as the new Canon RF 2870f2 both has 95mm filter thread, this was the reason I picked the Haida 150 Wide-Angle Filter Holder instead. Wow, the experiment starting at 8:49 is awesome.
Great video Dave. You could put the filter straight up against the lens without the holder to test if it is the glass or the holder causing the flaring
Thanks for the great review! I own the NiSi v5 Pro (bought the advanced set and added the natural night filter on top) about a year ago. I find it very nice to use and high-quality (almost no color cast... except the 6 stop ND gives a bit more of it, but I always ICC-profile my filters along with lenses & my camera sensor anyway... using a ColorChecker Passport). On the other hand, the flaring you so clearly showed surprised me. I'm curious what some field testing shows with my mostly 77mm diameter lenses. Something I was warned about is the toughness of the filters - and so I tend to be pretty careful handling them to avoid scratches - it seems they have the toned layer on the surface as opposed to in the glass to prevent it from getting scratched.
Hmm. If one were to add a thin layer of black felt or a apply a thin layer of flat black poly paint to reduce the sheen of the inner mount circle, and as long as it didn’t interfere with the Cp threads, do you think that would be doable to reduce flaring or is not worth the effort or too risky to ruin the mount?
I think most of the reflection is actually coming from the step down ring because that is gapped back from the rest of the holder which gives room for the light to reflect around. I think just replacing the step down rings with non-gloss ones would greatly reduce the flare
I have been thinking on the Nisi holder for quite some time, i have been using the lee holder but you have to put the polarizer in the front of all the other filters that you are using. This way seems better
I've been using Lee for years now. Probably a bit old hat given all of the new systems that have popped up recently. I have not tried any of the other systems, so cannot say which is best - the one thing which has given me pause over the NISI system is the way they pack the polariser at the back of the holder. For me, I only pop the polariser on very occasionally. With the Lee, it jut pops on the front - not the most elegant solution but it is quick and easy. With the NISI it looks like quite a faf to pop the polariser on and off. Unlike the Lee system, the grad filters will need to come off. (oh yes, I also shoot into the sun habitually)
It's not that bad to be honest Matt, the square filters obviously go in the front holder section - however the CPL screws into the adapter ring behind, so you don't need to take all the filters out, you can just disconnect the front holder using the quick release pin, add the CPL and then reconnect the front section.
Interesting review l was looking at the NiSi filter system myself for landscape work thanks. Remember Dave there is good flare and bad flare. Cher looked hot Noddy Holder did not.
I’d love to add a graduated filter to my filter collection, but even though they’re probably the best on the market, NiSi filters are too expensive for me. I’ve been using circular Gobe 2 peaks NDs and PL and I like them, they’re good enough for what I do and they’re fairly priced. But I sometimes feel the need of a grad filter for those times where you can’t bracket and there’s an impossible amount of DR to be captured in one shot. Can you sometimes make a video about different squared filters and their performance? :)
Surprised they didn't send you any Nisi ND filters to test, kind of odd to just send you a grad ND. I personally use a Lee filter system with a Lee 105mm landscape polarizer that goes on the front, and Nisi 6 stop, Nisi 10 stop and Nisi 3 stop grad ND. I wonder if you will get the flaring if you use no step down ring?
Possibly, although I don't have any 82mm lenses to try that out. Definitely think they need to change it to a matte finish rather than a gloss, it can't be doing any favours
You could paint the inside of the step-down ring with non-reflective black paint but you'd have to be careful with the thread, and possibly the outer edges in case the thickness of the paint it too much for the c-pl. Nice touch at 3:39 👍
I have considered it but as you said it could present problems. I could just buy a different ring with a matte finish, however just wanted to highlight so that NiSi may consider changing materials in the future
Nothing that the likes of the Cokin EVO pro can do, except the Cokin requires a 105mm CPL which can be pricy for a good one, where as the NiSi is slightly more expensive but comes with a smaller CPL included
almost perfect: Only Nisi's CPL can be used, not other much better threaded universals. It is not difficult to make any adapter ring that holds the v5 filter holder have a suitable thread to receive a CPL of any other brand such as a magnificent breakthrough x4 cpl. There are a lot of people who have both square and round high quality filters and are looking for a polyfilter and nothing else. If Nisiv5's square filter holder supports square filters of any brand, it should also solve the issue of CPL of any brand. Regards.
you dont put in front of a polarizer a vario-ND Filter. they cancel each other out. A Vario-ND Filter is nothing more then two polarizer in front of each other. I think Theoria Apophasis has done a video about that.

Great review. I used to use uncoated resin filters long time ago and reflections of the stepdown rings was often a problem.

Nice job. Comprehensive and clearly explained.
We’re missing the MOST IMPORTANT information here, i e, does this system vignette? From which focal length?

Dave, thank you! Question: Could you correct the flare problem, adding a PRO-MIST 1/8 filter?
I might need to adjust with bracketing until better holder system comes along!!!
How do I lock the filter holder? The V6 has a lock screw, the V5 Pro does not. I feel really stupid right now.

Great job love your new video coloring!
Thanks 😊

get cokin z pro
Matt black paint would cure this flare problem then. Have use it on several things I made or modified to improve.
Yes was definitely thinking matte over gloss ... Not sure who thought gloss was a good idea 🤣
Really useful review thanks, answered a lot of things I wanted to know :)

Will this system mount onto a 58mm? I haven't been able to find a step down ring.
Yes it will mount on anything less than 82mm, you may just need to but an additional step down and stack them to take it from 67 to 58
So what do NiSi filters do that the Cokin Creative filter system couldn’t do?
Nothing that the likes of the Cokin EVO pro can do, except the Cokin requires a 105mm CPL which can be pricy for a good one, where as the NiSi is slightly more expensive but comes with a smaller CPL included
Nice review, pity about the loud annoying music at the end
the similar system has also haida filter
That's was informative
Ehhh. @6:43.... A square filter can not have a Diameter. Maybe a With....? May I suggest you correct this?
Perhaps you should watch this ... ruclips.net/video/gGiw_z3f1Qc/видео.html
I was looking for some square filter system to fit mi Irix 15mm, but I think this won't do it.. 95mm is too much :(
Irix have their own Edge filter system which works on the 15mm
Irix has the filter system for that specific lens now: IRIX Filter Holder IFH-100
You don't know how to get rid of flare?

Yes but i don't see where he is using a variable ND filter?
you said 150x100mm and it's the other way round .. You say the width first
Depends which way you hold it 😉
@@DaveMcKeegan there are two different sizes There is the 100mm and the 150mm x150mm and 150mm x 170mm
Hihi I’m first. Thanks for the good content
10 points to you for being first 😉
You could of called in for a cuppa. I live on widnes side of bridge lol ps good video 👍
Well my time is split between Helsby and Liverpool so I'm forever passing you 🤣
Well once I'm back from oz if you want to call in your most welcome.
Sounds good, enjoy Oz
Saltesman ...
pretty sure with 800 followers i can get a kit from nisi...
Lee holder is 100X times better I should of bought that one with those Nisi filters.... V6 is crap
