I have sent a few of your pay dirt bags to my father since his heart attack. It gives him something to do that he always loved to do. Plus he gets excited every time he looks at what is in the pay dirt. It's therapeutic for him. Thank you Mr. Hurd.

I look at those beautiful mountain streams in this video, and I feel so sad for our wonderful planet, when it is left in the hands of (predominantly) greedy men who pretend they want to save the world but really don't give a shit.

As a kid I used to dream that I was a ‘49er panning for gold. One way of copping with this virus isolation gave me a new hobby with pay dirt! I know it’s not to get rich, but after 5 bags, I’m getting fair panning skills and not dropping everything on the carpet! (🤪 My first bag had several decent flakes and one picker, I lost it all when I turned over my hand holding the uncapped bottle. If there was more than a couple of dollars worth, I’d follow your assaying video and cut a hole in the carpet!) • @someguy-k2h
    @someguy-k2h 5 лет назад +33

I am a bit confused. If the whole point of panning paydirt is to train yourself to be a better panner, then you should start with a known quantity of gold at different sizes to then compare how well you did in your recovery. Hopefully you are 100%, but you sure will be better then 80%. If you can't find at least 80% of the gold in a bucket, then you need to keep practicing.
So if I put $3200 into buying a number of different nuggets and fines, assuming I can find all my gold in the bucket, I now have an essentially free learning tool, which I can reuse as many times as I need in any different condition I want to simulate. I have saved myself $600 that can be used for fuel or equipment. That sounds, to me, like a more sound business decision for your hobbie.
What am I missing here that is worth $600?

While reading all these comments, there is one "X-Factor" no one is talking about. That being your initial cost in a Paydirt bag/bucket versus the cost to go find that same amount for yourself out of the land. You've got gas, food, lodging, clothing, equipment and other misc items. The old adage when it comes to finding Gold is akin to spending a dollar to find just .05 cents of Gold. A lot of effort without the R.O.I. So in some cases, doing Paydirt in the comfort of your 'abode' could be about the same (cost wise) as looking for it out in the Wild. I think for a number of people that don't do any form of mining should consider practicing with the small packs of paydirt and then practice again and again and again till you don't lose any of the fine stuff. The cost for some of the small packages would equate (value-wise) pretty much the same as the cost of filling up your Gas-tank to go find the gold.

As a recently retired science teacher it would have been fun to do this for my classroom. I taught all hands on science to at risk students with behavioral issues. These were all inner city kids and it was always amazing how they became excited about learning. When they first came to us the system had failed them and then spit them out. They hated school (couldn’t blame them) so it was so rewarding to teach to mastery as my philosophy was that education should be taught as exploration. I think this is why I have enjoyed your videos so much. Thank you.

This is absolute best case scenario. You know the owner of the shop. They "custom made" this bucket for you. They know you're doing a RUclips video. And then at the end you have to stretch the truth to come up with a $2,600 final value. The only concrete way to value the bucket is by the weight of the gold. The shape and desirability of individual nuggets is subjective.
It should not cost hundreds (best case) or thousands to learn how to pan some gold. These buckets are just glorified scratch tickets, they aren't helping the hobby they are taking advantage of people.

This. I've always said that the real money in gold is in buying it from idiots wasting their time working six hours or more a day for ten bucks worth of profit and selling it to rich women in cities. Also gold prospecting equipment. I've made 2 wash plants, one man portable one on a trailer. I then sold them immediately without ever getting to test them in the wild for a ridiculous amount of money (the only thing close was when I built a $5k motorcycle and sold it for $25k when done - something I could repeat all day long but don't because I'm a moron) mostly because I used PVC and plastics and heat welding to assemble it making it far lighter in weight and passing several laws in Australia on machinery.
A high banker sells for $1k+, yet has about $60 worth of parts to it, and I sold it for half market price. You can't tell me that's not a ridiculous scam. I actually felt dirty selling the above three machines I mentioned, I cannot morally do it. I feel like I'm a mugger or something because I know it's NOT worth that. Idk how companies like Gold Hog and Keene etc sleep at night. That's why I stick with my day job.
But you're correct; the real money isn't in finding gold it's in exploiting the addiction. Just like art, or all the dolphin trainer ambitions young women have; the real money in art is selling art supplies, the real money in authoring is selling book publishing, the real money in music is paid distribution, the real money in modelling is banging hot chicks on the casting couch, uh, I mean selling them headshots for $50 a photo, etc, etc.

Dan, it's amazing how many snarky, unkind comments on here. Cynicism is alive and well...too bad.
I thought you made it pretty clear that buying paydirt is not for investment purposes. It is for fun
Anyway, thanks for doing a quality video. I found it entertaining.
I would suggest that classifying is appropriate for miners, for those who are trying to make wages, it makes sense. However, for those of us who are recreational panners, I suggest not classifying at all. Why? Because I prefer to find gold in the bottom of my gold pan rather than in a screen. I find that enhances the Eureka moment for me.
As the owner of my own paydirt company and I love sharing the Eureka moment with others, and I love to hear my customers share their approval for our paydirt.
So why buy paydirt? What a lot of folks don't seem to appreciate is that not everyone lives near gold-bearing land, so buying paydirt is their only option.
Likewise, all the gold bearing land East of the Mississippi is on private property where you can't go without permission, so buying paydirt is their only option.
Not everyone has the physical ability to go prospecting and meet all the physical demands of such a venture, so buying paydirt is their only option.
Not everyone can afford the time or the financial resources and equipment required to go prospecting, so buying paydirt is their only option.
Purchasing paydirt is the only rational option for a lot of people...I'm one of them and I love it.
Thanks again for the video. I enjoyed it...and you inspired me to offer a 52 gram bucket on my store.

Cynical my ass. When social media influencers/youtubers make videos showing how great "paydirt" is from a specific store, and the store makes it specially for them with high yield, suckers can buy from them and get screwed, royally. Paydirt gold yields should be GUARANTEED since they are explicitly salted with gold by the vendor. Anyone reviewer with integrity would purchase these items through double-blind purchases so that the vendor doesn't know it's from some internet reviewer.

My girlfriend had ordered me a 3lb bag that comes with a pan I like from this country for £36 with no guarantee of gold.Miller did a review not long ago and it wasn't that good so I'm not expecting much from it.I didn't get the chance to say there's a bag with a gram guaranteed for £60.but it will make a change from panning roadside cons out and I like the pan so it's ok.it was a present and you can't look a gift horse in the mouth.😁👍👌

Not all gold is found created equally.
I have grown up being told that Scotish and Welsh gold is pretty darn pure and is worth more than in other countries.
You mention a few times that your paydirt has Australian gold in it as it is big and shiney and worth a lot more. Australian gold is found in larger pieces but I thought it wasnt as pure and is worth less pound per pound (as such). I have looked online to try to identify which country has the purest gold but it only seems to want to list the biggest producers of gold or gold reserves.
With your expert knowledge, can you let me/us know which countries have the best gold (quality not quantity).
As this person knew you were coming and it would be on YT, could he have seeded the bucket with more than usual?
Maybe do a blind test in a month or so.

If I could buy pay dirt right now I would totally pay it out right now because I think it’s a lot of fun plus it gives you experience especially for people that are just starting out or people that have been doing it for maybe a few months or so but I think it’s a lot of fun and I think it’s worth it and you taught me a great deal because I’m just starting out and I’m learning everything I can right now so you taught me a lot so far Dan Hurd And I’m glad to see that you are doing well knowing that you had heart surgery so keep up the good work God bless and thank you very much

This is actually very accurate with the costs, he didn’t add any extra gold.

As if. They knew they were selling this to a youtuber. He made money on that bucket. (a tiny amount, probably a hundred bucks or less) And they knew a ton of people were going to see that and come in and try to buy some or that was what they were hoping anyway. However not everyone is going to look at the date on the video, because people are notorious for being spontaneous. Today he would have made over a grand with the price of gold, give or take because of purity.
